Chapter 33: how much you mean to me
"Not exactly, I just have an appreciation for all things that are fine. In this case, people. Carina is very fine, both in beauty and character," Daphne assured and Damon was not at all surprised by her response. He had always known his sister had an eye for very fine things. Quality and Daphne were synonymous.
He left Daphne shortly afterward and went to find Alexander. Damon found him pacing the floor in his room, his face tense with a small frown on his forehead.
"Alex?" Damon called out to him, snapping the man from his daze.
"Hey," Alexander greeted as he stopped moving and looked at the man whose presence helped to calm his nerves greatly.
Damon approached him, his hand landing on his nape and tangling in a few strands of his thick midnight black hair.
"What’s wrong?" he asked and Alexander sighed softly, a sign that he was deeply troubled by something.
"A raven arrived this morning with a message from my home. My little sister is very ill," Alexander told him as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a tiny scroll.
Damon frowned in concern and was quick to hug him gently, his hand caressing the back of his head in an attempt to offer comfort.
"I have to go and see her, Damon," Alexander whispered, his voice heavy with worry and a faint fear that reached Damon.
"It’s okay. You can go. I understand," Damon replied and Alexander’s arms around him tightened. Damon would have been deeply worried if it was any of his siblings in the same situation.
He reluctantly pulled away from the hug, already missing this man’s warm embrace.
"I am sorry this is happening," Damon consoled him, and Alexander flashed him a grateful smile, leaning in to place a soft kiss on his forehead.
"I will be back soon," he assured, and Damon felt his chest tighten as he realized with an awful intensity that he didn’t want this man to go. If only he could accompany him on his journey... but Damon knew he couldn’t. His duties as the crown prince of the kingdom kept him very busy and he couldn’t just abandon them without prior preparation.
This was all happening so fast.
"Are you fit to travel in your condition? Your wounds are still quite fresh," Damon pointed out.
"I can manage. The journey from here to my home is about half a day," Alexander explained but that didn’t ease Damon’s worry. Twelve hours on the road was quite a lot of time.
"When will you be back?" Damon asked, hoping to get an estimate of how long he would have to wait for him to return.
"In a week or two," Alexander replied and Damon nodded faintly, trying to keep his face calm. That was so much time to be away from him, but Damon knew Alexander needed to check on his sister and ensure she was alright.
"I will wait for you," Damon replied, and Alexander smiled faintly, the mischievous gleam in his eyes returning.
"I will try to return as soon as possible. You still have to claim me..." he reminded, and Damon’s cheeks flushed red-hot from his teasing.
Alexander closed the distance between them, his palms cupping Damon’s cheeks in a gentle grip. His forest green eyes flickered with an underlying hint of restraint as their lips met in a tender kiss. Alexander’s lips slowly nibbled on Damon’s, their tongues entwining in a kiss that was quickly becoming passionate. Their breaths were quick, shallow pants when they pulled away to breathe.
"I will miss you," Alexander admitted as his forehead rested against Damon’s, their breaths mingling.
"I will miss you more," Damon whispered as he leaned in and captured Alexander’s lips in a hot and fiery kiss.
Damon reluctantly let Alexander slip out of his arms before he helped him pack the things he needed for his journey. Damon didn’t have the strength to watch him go up close, so he watched him ride off on horseback from his bedroom window. It was approaching noon and Alexander could arrive at his destination by midnight if he didn’t make any stops.
Damon sighed softly as he watched Alexander disappear from sight. He felt quite lonely since both Alexander and Eamon were gone and he wasn’t going to be seeing either of them for a while.
Damon left the room to go seek out his other friends and carry on with his duties. He needed the distraction from his thoughts.
...
Eamon was surprised to find himself sleeping for so long.
The faint morning rays entered through the large single closed window in the room, and he became increasingly aware of his surroundings as he glanced around. He was still in Valerion’s room and in his... arms.
Eamon stilled, aware of the way his body was tightly pressed against Valerion’s. He slowly raised his head from the dragon’s large broad chest and looked up at him.
A pair of open ashen grey eyes caught his attention and Eamon swallowed. This dragon looked so handsome in the morning with his thick midnight black hair messy and sticking out randomly.
"Let me go." The words left his lips as he tried to keep his eyes from wandering.
Valerion smiled, clearly not offended that his mate wanted some distance.
"Good morning," he greeted, his voice deep and hoarse from sleep.
Eamon blinked, finding his voice pleasant. Valerion leaned in and placed a quick kiss on Eamon’s cheek. That snapped him from his daze and his cheeks flushed, his skin tingling.
"Why did you do that?" Eamon asked, his voice a little shaky as he recovered from his shock. This dragon seemed to like kissing him. At first, it was his neck, then his head, and now his cheek. The next kiss was probably going to land on his lips.
He gulped, strangely not detesting the idea. His head spun at the realization that he wanted Valerion to kiss him!
This dragon was certainly doing something to him.
"Dragons make the effort to show their mates how much they adore them. You may not feel the bond, but I do, and I cannot resist showing you how much you mean to me. The simplest way I can do that is by kissing your head or cheek," Valerion explained matter-of-factly, his face calm and a warm feeling settled in Eamon’s chest despite his confused and alarmed state.
"You don’t even know me," he stated the obvious. They had just met a few days ago, and it was quite insane to believe that Valerion adored him already. A few days ago, the same dragon had threatened to burn him alive.
