Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 94: Someone else
Chapter 94: Someone else
Maxim did not know why there was a lingering shame in her eyes. All of this had nothing to do with her and he could not even bring himself to think about what she must have gone through. But why did she look so disturbed?
"I was numb,’’ Diana said, ’’Daisy lived separately, traveled a lot and I stayed at the mansion most of the time. But... we shared everything with each other even though we lived far apart. I felt betrayed by her. And at that moment... at that moment...’’ her face turned pale.
It was as if his feet had a consciousness of their own as Maxim stood up and let go of her hand. He walked around the table before pulling her towards him, ’’Don’t say if you don’t want to. Let’s...’’
’’I hated that baby,’’ Diana whispered the secret that she had decided to take to her grave the moment she fell in love with Angel. It was the ugliest version of herself that she was determined to hide inside her forever yet the moment he held her, it was as if the tight strings that she had tied around her heart were loosening up, ’’At that moment, I hated her so much. I was so scared about the chaos in the family that I blamed everything on her. I thought that if she was not there then maybe things would not have turned out like that.’’
Maxim continued holding her close to him as he stroked her hair gently.
Diana pulled back and tilted her head to look at him, ’’You are appalled by me, aren’t you?"
A frown settled between his brows.
Diana turned her face to the side but he before she could look away, he cupped her face, ’’I am not,’’ there was conviction in his tone, ’’I have never and I will never think any less of you no matter what you tell me about yourself.’’
The fact that she stripped her heart bare and dared to expose this to him was already a very brave thing to do.
Nobody would do that. Nobody would show their ugly sides or speak about their darkest thoughts. It took courage. A lot of courage.
She did. She opened up about it.
And it was him she opened up to. It made him feel warm.
Diana looked at him as if she was trying to gouge whether he was just coaxing her or if he really meant it.
He stroked her cheeks gently, ’’I don’t know what your first thought was but the fact that you are here with Angel, doing things for her that you have never done before says a thing or two. Be it crying when you realized that you have been careless by not changing her diapers, doing hours of research on how and what to feed her, looking for a house or a job, getting her branded clothes while wearing non-branded ones, sacrificing your sleep, peace, and everything just for her sake...’’ For other people, it might be normal daily things but for her, everything that she was doing right now was so different. As she pushed herself to her feet, he sighed, ’’All of it makes you so charming. You have always been beautiful but it makes you even more beautiful. So as far as the question goes about me being appalled, no—’’
The remaining words rested at the tip of his tongue as the woman stood on her tiptoes and captured his lips with hers.
His hand which was resting on her cheek trembled.
Maxim’s entire body froze as he felt the softness against his lips. She had both her hands placed on his shoulders as she moved her lips gently against his.
When she felt the man’s reaction, it was as if someone poured a bucket of ice water on her. Diana came back to her senses and she realized what she had done just now.
Maxim had always acted uncaring to a certain extent since they reunited and she started staying with him. Diana was doing a lot of things that she had never done before and she never thought that all along, someone had been noticing it, observing her.
She had been noticing him, his body, his actions, everything about him since the day she had come here but she had always shrugged it off as admiring pretty things. Human rights and all that.
She did not realize when her equations for this man started shifting.
Maybe it was the day before yesterday when Ryle told her that this was his house which he never put on rent. And she could not stop thinking about the interior, the gardens, the silly lies... that Maxim spouted just for her sake. It was hard for her heart to not skip a few beats at the thought of everything he had been doing. If Ryle never said it, she might have never known it at all.
And then when she confronted him about his lies in the Master bedroom, for the first time, she felt the air was dense.... That their proximity was suffocating her differently from the general definition of ’suffocation’.
It has been more than 24 hours since she started trying to get those strange thoughts out of her head but when he spoke about how he noticed every little thing she did, as he comforted her without even trying, it was hard to control her instincts and to not do what her body and heart demanded.
Even before she realized it, she had crashed her lips onto his.
But now as she felt his body going rigid, every nerve in her body was on alert. And she was filled with regret.
She stepped back from him.
Maxim slowly recovered his senses as he breathed again, the scent of roses drifting away from him left a lingering emptiness in his chest.
’’I am sorry. I was in... a daze earlier. I didn’t realize... I thought it was someone else,’’ Diana had her head lowered so she did not notice the flash of hurt on his face. She covered her face in her palms, ’’I am so sorry...’’
