Crashing into an Old Flame
Chapter 93: Her wedding day

Chapter 93: Her wedding day

’’I have a very common face. You know you will find tens of people like me in the streets of Los Angeles,’’ Diana awkwardly waved her hand.

The Chef was speechless.

The waiters and waitresses who were silently admiring the striking beauty in front of them were speechless.

Maxim: "_"

The food was served soon and the Chef placed an ice bucket with a bottle of wine on it before he nodded at the both, ’’Enjoy the meal.’’

As they left, Diana’s gaze followed their backs and she spotted them walking towards a five-star restaurant on the other side of the road.

She was still in a daze.

The man from earlier was a Michelin-starred Chef. When she was 14, a girl from the socialite circle had bragged about eating an exclusive meal prepared by some star chef. The news had somehow traveled to her mother’s ears who was annoyed at her for taking it lying down. A month later on her birthday, her father invited this chef to the party. He was not an ordinary person who could be invited by just anyone and she still remembered the jealous looks that those group of girls wore as they started fawning over her. But this man only prepared her meal exclusively, starting from starters to dessert.

Diana had remained very much of a bystander back then. After the party ended, her mother went into lecture mode about how she should always show people where she stood.

A gentle tug on her hand snapped her out of her daze.

Diana blankly glanced at Maxim, ’’I... My parents should not know that I am here,’’ Earlier, the man seemed confused about her identity so she masked it. Even though she knew for a fact that there is not a chance that this Chef was in touch with any of her parents but better safe than sorry.

’’Why?"

Maxim asked, surprising her, ’’Curious about my private life?" she repeated the same line that he had said earlier.

The man’s lips thinned as he tried to pull his hand away but she surprised herself by holding onto his thumb tighter, feeling the warmth of his big palm on hers.

’’You know... Daisy was getting married that day. She was betrothed to that guy ever since she turned 16. I thought Daisy would reject it when the topic of marriage came up and then my parents would try different ways to coax or coerce her into it,’’ Yet, the reality turned out to be quite different, ’’But she said yes. I tried to talk her out of it but she was always calm about it. And over time, all of us believed that she wanted that marriage.’’

With Daisy’s strong aversion towards men, Diana did not find it strange that her sister was willing to finish it once and for all by settling with that man. That guy was a decent person and Daisy must have thought she could get rid of their parents.

Maxim’s brows tugged together. He had a feeling that a twist was coming.

And Diana’s consequent words proved him right, ’’But when the rituals started and Dad went to get her, she was gone. The bride ran away from her own wedding, making fun of her whole family in the socialite circle,’’ her father suppressed the news from reaching the media, and afraid of his ire, the guests did not dare to breathe a word about it. Still, there were a few slip-ups and some media members published that news but their companies were shut down in 30 minutes and from the past few weeks, she had been keeping an eye on the news but she did not see a word about that scandal. She believed that her father handled it.

It sounded like something Daisy would do. Maxim glanced at the small palm settled under his. Maybe she was absent-minded or maybe she forgot that she was still holding his hand.

He did not move his hand, not wanting to remind her of it.

’’What about Angel?’’ he asked. What about you?

She was just an innocent bystander in all this fiasco but her current circumstances told him that she was the most implicated in this.

Diana smiled bitterly, looking towards the sea, ’’After Daisy left, my parents got busy handling the media and my mom has... um... a bad temper so Dad sent her away. I handled the guests and my Dad then talked to the groom. His parents were terribly upset and although he was concerned about his reputation, he was calm because that marriage was a business deal to him. Daisy’s distant attitude suited him better because he knew she would not act like a wife or anything and he would also be benefitting by becoming the son-in-law of the Chens...’’ she sighed, ’’Everything was gradually getting settled when the owner of an orphanage came. Light orphanage.’’

The atmosphere had suddenly gone from relaxing to solemn and Diana had yet to look at the table. The questions she had wanted to ask Maxim were long pushed to the back of her head as she relived that day.

Maxim did not break her trance this time. He intertwined his fingers with hers, stroking the back of her hand with his thumb as he waited for her to continue speaking.

’’That... That woman had a baby in her arms... And the guests had all left. The hall was empty. There was only dad, me... a few servants who were being scolded by my mom. The owner of the orphanage told us that she had Daisy’s daughter with her. I... was in disbelief and I denied it. My Dad was quiet and my mom thought someone was out to extort money from us,’’ Diana wet her bottom lips nervously, ’’Then, my parents received a text. A DNA test report which was sent with the demand of a huge amount of money. The sender asked for the money to be sent in 10 minutes or else, they will make the reports viral. Dad and Mom were on the same page about it. They sent the money without hesitation because the time was too short to track the blackmailer.’’
