Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 89: Hostile people
Chapter 89: Hostile people
Around noon, Diana received a call from Ivy who informed her that Angel was suddenly moody and refused to eat.
Ivy would have handled it usually but after pulling an all-nighter, she was tired and her usual boisterous energy was down, and it rubbed off on Angel too.
As Angel was growing up, she was getting more sensitive about everything.
In the end, Diana took a cab back to the mansion during the lunch break and coaxed the moody Angel.
After putting her to sleep, she rushed back to the hospital just in time, panting softly as she made her way to the pantry and grabbed a cold coffee from the refrigerator.
’’Is the situation at your home fine now?" Mary asked.
Before leaving, Diana had informed the woman that she had a situation at home, ’’Yes, it’s fine.’’
’’If you need, you can take a day off.’’
Diana shook her head, ’’No, it is fine now. Really...’’
Diana had yet to finish speaking when someone cut off her words, ’’Oh, who do I see here? Isn’t it the new VVIP of our hospital? Head Nurse, I didn’t know people were allowed to leave the hospital during working hours. You don’t have anything to say about it?"
Diana turned her head to the side and found a girl dressed in a casual dress. She had short shoulder-length hair and she looked like some rich family’s daughter with the way she was dressed in designed clothes from head to toe. There was visible hostility in her eyes.
Since she was not in a uniform, Diana concluded that the woman did not work as a nurse.
The lunchtime was not over yet, many staff members were around and this person seemed to be familiar with them.
Head Nurse Mary seemed uncomfortable. She usually did not allow such things but she could see that Diana was a nice girl and when she said there was a family emergency, Mary allowed her to leave. Especially because it was during lunch hours.
Diana could sense Mary’s discomfort and her wariness towards this newcomer.
Even the other staff were whispering to each other.
’’She even joined without any qualification in the medical field...’’
’’And that too for such an important position? Do you think she used some underhanded methods...?
’’It could be possible. Why would someone let a business graduate here?"
’’How did Dr. Warner let her stay beside him?"
’’Look at her guts. She even dared to sneak away during working hours...’’
Even though they were whispering to each other, their voices were not low.
Diana’s eyelids twitched slightly. These people...
Was it not a hospital? Why were they acting like jealous fellow actresses from the entertainment industry?
From the hushed conversations she picked up just now, she realized that this woman’s name was Veronica. She was another doctor’s assistant just like her.
Diana did not understand her reasoning for being this rude to her. She had just joined yesterday and even if this woman disdained her for her qualifications or lack of experience just like others, why was she picking on her so strongly?
’’Hey, you...’’ The bob-haired newcomer who had started it snapped her fingers in front of her eyes, ’’You have nothing to say?" there was an undisguised snark in her tone.
Diana tilted her head to the side and glanced at Mary, ’’Your nail art looks prettier today,’’ she looked at her fingers for another few seconds before she nodded in appreciation ’’Thanks for the coffee and your time, lovely,’’ Winking at Mary, Diana stood up and strolled out of the staff room like she was a princess roaming around in the royal gardens.
Mary: "_" As happy as I am about your high praise but young lady, are you sure you are focusing on the right thing?
The remaining staff: "_"
The woman named Veronica who was ready to chastise Diana with all logic and reasonings found herself speechless by the woman’s lack of response. She did not even acknowledge her.
Veronica glanced in the direction where Diana had disappeared and her face darkened.
Mary noticed the woman’s expression and she was concerned in her heart. Diana was such a nice young lady yet she seemed to have provoked half of the hospital day just on her second day of work. How would she survive here? Sigh...
On the other hand, the culprit responsible for the chaos amongst the staff members was completely carefree.
Diana picked a quiet corner and finished her cold coffee quietly.
Maxim was doing a Cranial vault reconstruction surgery on an 8-month-old child. And the surgery procedure was 4-6 hours long.
Diana glanced at her watch.
Heaving a deep breath, she quickly finished the coffee and got back to arrange his schedule for the next day.
By the time Diana was finished with everything, it was past 7 pm.
She stepped inside Maxim’s office room and placed the file on the desk with the post-its which included some specific information about a few patients.
Diana was about to leave but something on the desk caught her attention.
There was a simple matte black photo frame.
Curiosity got the best of her and she picked it up from the desk as she turned it around but much to her surprise, the photo frame was empty.
All she could see was an expanse of white and her reflection on the glass. There was no picture in it at all.
Who keeps an empty photo frame in the center like it is something very precious?
While she was lost in her thoughts, she heard a voice from behind, ’’What are you doing?"
’’Ah...’’ Diana almost threw the photo frame away but she grabbed it at the last moment and turned around.
Maxim was sitting on the couch near the wall.
Before she entered the office, she did check the place through the translucent portion of the glass.
He was nowhere near the desk.
His surgery was over nearly 45 minutes ago and it was her first time seeing him in scrubs and as much as a novel experience it was for her, she stayed at a distance.
Initially, she had decided to lessen their interactions so she could think carefully and find a plan to crush her strange thoughts about him but then the more she avoided him, the further awkward it got.
