Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 75: Focus
Chapter 75: Focus
"You need to consult Dr. Warner to arrange his schedule accordingly and you will need to update him about that.’’
Diana nodded.
"The most important rule,’’ Mary looked at her.
Diana’s ear perked up. Why was the head nurse looking so alert? What was the rule about?
"As his assistant, you are going to be around Dr. Warner most of the time but don’t gossip about his private life,’’ Mary’s warning gaze scanned through the room filled with women and a few men as she said, ’’You don’t need to tell anyone which model he is dating, or what his ex-girlfriend said to him or if he is single or anything in general.’’
The rest of the people all averted their gazes.
A vein throbbed on Diana’s forehead. Ex-girlfriend? It should be that woman with whom she had spotted him in the cafe when she went to buy blankets.
Models?
From the sound of it, Maxim had a string of lovers in the past.
For some strange reason, she highlighted ’IN THE PAST’ in her head.
She remembered that he told her that he was single. At that time, she had retorted with what his private life got to do with her but now, she was shamelessly revisiting that conversation.
Diana blinked innocently before she said, ’’I get it. I have zero interest in Dr. Warner’s personal affairs,’’ Just how many women has he dated? She thought to herself, not feeling an ounce of guilt for contradicting her own words.
Mary seemed pleased with her response, ’’Rest you should know how to deal with a patient...’’
’’I don’t. I’d like it if you can explain,’’ Diana interrupted her.
Mary looked like a kind lady and sure enough, she explained to her without hesitation, ’’You just need to keep their information recorded before they see the Doctor. Weight, age, symptoms, and all that...’’
Just as Diana was about to nod, one of the curious nurses spoke up.
’’It’s a basic thing. Haven’t you done it before?"
’’I have no work experience,’’ Diana replied after giving it a thought.
At that, even Mary seemed surprised, ’’You have never worked at a hospital before?"
Diana shook her head. A hospital? She has never had a job before. After her business classes started, she had wanted to do some job just to gain some life experience but her mother found it degrading for her to go out and do some random job.
At that point, Diana just wanted some peace so she did not even bother arguing.
’’How.. did you make it through the interview?’’ Mary blinked, ’’It’s so rare to see someone pass with no work experience, and that too for such an important position. If the Director comes to know about this then...’’ her voice was laced with concern.
’’Well...’’ She could not tell her that their Director was the person who personally interviewed her, could she?
The nurse from before spoke up again, ’’I think her qualifications must be outstanding.’’
Although Diana sensed no animosity from the woman, but she found her tone judgemental.
Other than Mary, everyone else’s gaze was pretty much judgmental.
Mary seemed to have realized it as she nodded at the nurse, ’’How did I not think of it before? Diana, is that true?’’
Diana frowned, ’’No, I have a business degree.’’
As soon as she said that, the room fell silent.
The whispers and murmurs quietened down and even Mary looked stunned.
But Diana just pushed herself to her feet and grabbed her bag before she stepped out of the staff room.
She did pass the interview with her own capabilities.
Hell, she could tell them that she went to the top medical school in Beijing. Then, they would ask her why she was just an assistant. What after that?
Could she tell them that she quit?
She quit medical school during her residency years. Even though the truth differed but nobody knew it.
To the people there, she was an addict, a quitter and she was shunned for everything that happened.
And she did not want anyone to look at her the same way here too.
Diana shifted her attention from a wheelchair-bound old man who was being pushed by his wife in the hospital hallway and glanced at the tattoo on her wrist.
She was not trying to paint the image of some goddess here in this unfamiliar place.
But everyone had an ugly phase that they never wanted to put on display.
And she was no exception. She wanted to tuck away all the ugly sides of herself.
Life here has been very different from what she expected.
But her initial goals will never change.
Earn more money.
Protect Angel and raise her well.
That’s it.
But as soon as she thought that, a stunning face flashed in her mind. Dark eyes that always seemed to see through her.
She bit her bottom lips as she shook her head.
Focus.
Focus, Diana.
...
There was not a day where Diana felt awkward around Maxim. But keeping their recent interactions in check, she thought it was going to be super awkward around him.
Yet, the reality was different from her expectations.
When Maxim got into work mode, he was a professional.
Maxim had two consecutive surgeries arranged one after another so they barely had time for one-on-one interaction.
Other than the gossipy stares that she received from the staff, the rest of the day went fine.
She called Ivy thrice and much to her relief, Angel was playing and sleeping all day contrary to the way she had bawled when Diana left.
Just like that, her first day at the job was almost over.
Diana glanced at the board in her hand as she flipped through the information of the patients who had their appointments scheduled for tomorrow. After arranging them by the time of the appointments made, she placed the file on Maxim’s desk and checked the time on her phone.
It was past 7 pm already.
Maxim must have left the hospital already.
With that thought, she turned off the lights in the office room and stepped out.
