Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 74: Dos And Don’ts
Chapter 74: Dos And Don’ts
Diana was a bit stumped for words. First assistant...
It did feel like a lot of pressure.
She eyed Maxim, her gaze professional and her tone cryptic as she cleared her throat, ’’Doctor, would you like to reconsider?" Reconsider whether you want me to swap places with someone else or else it would be too late after that.
’’Mine,’’ Maxim said without a single shift in his expression.
’’Cough...’’ Do you have to phrase it like that?
But then again, Diana felt like she was overreacting. It was just a simple word and he said it like he was talking about breakfast. Why was she acting like someone asked her to marry them?
Diana slapped herself mentally and stepped out of the room with the head nurse Mary who kept looking at her with a probing gaze, ’’What did you ask Dr. Warner to reconsider...?"
’’It was about whether I should contact him by his phone number or email for work stuff,’’ Diana said without a single shift in her expression, and before the follow-up question of ’mine’ could come up, she asked, ’’if you don’t mind me asking, where did you get your nails done? They are so pretty.’’
The middle-aged lady blushed, ’’They were so expensive and it took a long time to get it done...’’
While the lady babbled about her nail art, Diana let out a sigh of relief.
All females liked compliments. The head nurse was a lady. Lucky her. Or else, she would not have known how to explain their Doctor’s vague vocabulary to them.
...
After Diana and the head nurse left his office, Maxim dragged a hand down his face as he pressed his other palm on the desk.
That silly woman.
What did she think again?
She thought and strongly believed that he did not want to see her.
It would have been easier that way if he minded her presence.
But he didn’t.
He didn’t mind having her around 24X7.
And that was quite concerning for both Maxim and his patients.
Maxim grabbed the glass of water and gulped it down to calm his racing mind.
His thoughts wandered off to the distant expression on her face when she snapped at him and told him that she was not playing around with the job.
Somehow, he felt that her anger at that moment was not directed at him.
He had never seen Diana being so snarky before. Not that she was not cute when she was angry, but he was surprised.
Then again, he had never seen her crying too but she cried twice since they met again.
She was weirdly sensitive everytime he raised his hand. Initially, he thought that she just did not like to be touched by him but that was obviously not the case.
She... was paranoid. When Ivy came to Ryle’s mansion for the first time, Diana was so scared that she even assumed that Ivy meant harm to her and Angel.
What was she scared of?
Why did she come to LA? What about her parents?
And Angel... Was she Diana’s daughter?
She did hold resemblances to her so if she was Diana’s then who was the father?
His lips thinned even without him noticing.
As much as he restrained himself from meddling in her matters, but those thoughts continued to invade his head from time to time.
Maxim took out his phone and dialed a string of numbers.
The call was answered on the last ring.
’’You don’t need to follow Diana anymore,’’ he said to Logan, the man who was supposed to protect Diana at her so-called ’new job’. Since she was by his side, she would be fine.
There was a pause on the other side of the phone before Logan said in his usual detached voice, ’’I wanted to inform you about this but women...’’ there was a brief pause before he added, ’’...and their fiascos.’’
A vein on Maxim’s forehead throbbed. He did not need to know the excruciating details of how Logan survived his mother and Ivy.
The man would still have informed him about the situation had he found it serious, ’’That’s fine,’’ Maxim said, ’’Keep an eye on Angel.’’
’’That kid?" Logan’s voice was laced with frustration, ’’From accompanying your social butterfly mother on her shopping spree to babysitting a child?"
’’Not babysitting. Protecting,’’ Maxim picked the paperweight from the desk, ’’Unless you want to accompany mom to her kitty parties too.’’
There was a long pause on the other side, ’’Angel it is,’’ the man hung up on the phone.
Maxim glanced at his phone as he placed the paperweight back on the desk.
One wicket down.
Logan was an ex-navy seal so, with his protection for Angel, Diana would have one less thing to worry about.
Even after that, the frown between his brows did not budge an inch.
Because his own center stump was swinging back and forth under somebody else’s control.
...
Unaware of Maxim’s predicament, Diana was stuck in another situation.
She was listening to the never-ending dos and don’ts of her job profile while being ogled by most of the available nurses.
Some had witnessed her exchange with Maxim in front of the Director’s office and were intrigued about what was going on.
Since Maxim never had an assistant before so she was like the object of everyone’s envy and curiosity. They were looking at her with gazes that spoke volumes.
’We can be a better assistant.’
’Why her? Is it the face?’
’Good lord, why can’t we be in her place?’
Diana’s lips twitched. She felt their gazes all over her but she was mostly desensitized to those looks. These people were nowhere as creepy compared to the socialites in their circle.
Yet she could not help but feel a shred of irritation towards Maxim. Hooking flowers everywhere he went. So much for not being famous and all that he claimed.
It was past lunch time so most of the staff were present and under their persistent gazes, Diana kept her face straight as she listened to Mary’s instructions.
