Crashing into an Old Flame
Chapter 73: Mine

Chapter 73: Mine

In the stressful atmosphere of medical school, Diana had begun to question her sanity.

Was she so distressed that she was hallucinating? Was she taking morphine even when she was not in pain? She had questioned herself under the disappointed gazes of the same professors and doctors who used to praise her.

In the end, as it turned out, her years of efforts went in vain because her mother could not stand it any longer and she handed a hefty amount of donation to those people.

’Enough playing. They will keep your addiction a secret and no one will know that you were suspended,’ she told her like she was doing her a favor when she was the one who schemed against her and replaced her normal cold pills with morphine. Everything was a plot, ’I want you to be proficient in business just like your sister.’

And as if it was a royal decree, she was confined to the home as her business classes started with private tutors so that she could get a business degree.

And that was the first time Diana had felt like her mother... would never be redeemed. The first time she felt the hope for that woman dimming inside her heart.

But she was helpless. And she never had the resources or strength to go against Alice Chen.

If not for Angel then she might have still been living there and enduring it...

’’Diana...’’

Diana did not realize when Maxim had approached her as he tapped on her shoulders to snap her out of her daze.

She pressed her hands on his chest and pushed him away from herself. Her force was not enough to budge him but since he was not on guard, he staggered a step back, ’’I am not playing games, Warner,’’ her eyes deepened, ’’If I want to do something, I do it and I give it my all. Working here is not something that I am doing out of boredom.’’

Maxim’s eyes narrowed, ’’You know I did not mean it...’’

’’I know,’’ Maybe she was venting her mother’s anger on him. It was so wrong. She knew unlike that woman; Maxim would never undermine her. Inhaling a deep breath, she nodded, ’’I get it that you don’t want to see me. You already see enough of me at your place and now here, it must be sickening. What I need to do is not quit the job, but to stay out of your sight.’’

’’I could watch you watching paint dry and I would be far from being sick.’’

Diana was stumped for words. His words were perfectly normal yet she felt like her face was gradually heating up.

She curled her fingers into a fist. This man... did he have dual personalities? On one hand, he did not want her in his sight, and on the other hand, he was saying that he would never be tired of watching her.

Moreover, what was wrong with her?

He sounded so normal while saying it but she...

There, there, heart, where are you flying away? Diana grabbed her imaginary heart and stuffed it inside her body.

She covered her face with both her hands, ’’Ugh... I am so sick of this,’’ why were her brain and heart not in sync?

Maxim’s face dropped when he heard the words. Sick of this? Of what? Of him?

’’Look, Warner. I get it that you don’t me to work under you. I know you have busy schedules and you won’t have time to guide me so I will ask the Director to replace me with some other doctor’s assistant if it’s possible. That way, you get an experienced assistant and my amateur self can find some other mentor,’’ that was the best Diana could come up with after a long moment of contemplation.

Yet, Maxim’s expressions worsened even further.

When Diana felt the frigid atmosphere, she slowly peeked from the gaps in her fingers.

’’No,’’ the man said.

Diana’s jaw dropped, ’’What do you take me as? Einstein? I gave your every possible equation to solve this question. I don’t have any left.’’

’’Mine,’’ Maxim uttered one word, all the while looking into her eyes.

The exquisite word rolled off his tongue so smoothly like it was the last word he would utter and one more word of explanation might kill him.

’’Y-Yours?" Diana’s eyes popped so wide that they could have literally bounced to the floor.

As if His Majesty pitied her befuddled state, he did her the grace of uttering two more precious words, ’’My assistant.’’

’’Pfft!" Diana choked on her saliva. She pressed her fist on the chest and massaged the spot to alleviate the discomfort as she glanced at the man who was standing there nonchalantly, ’’You... Why did you have to make my blood pressure spike when you were fine with the current arrangements...?"

’’Unreasonable.’’

As in, you were being unreasonable.

This time, Diana had no trouble deciphering his words.

She laughed in disbelief till her eyes teared up, ’’I was being unreasonable? Me?"

Maxim pursed his lips but nodded quietly.

Diana was so exasperated that she wanted to strangle him.

Luckily, before her temper could shoot through the roof, there was a knock on the door.

’’Dr. Warner,’’ A woman appeared in the room in the next moment.

She was slightly and her appearance reminded Diana of fluffy dumplings. How cute!

Maxim nodded at her.

’’Miss Chen,’’ the woman turned to her, ’’I am the head nurse. You can call me Mary,’’ she looked to be somewhere in her late thirties and there was a friendly smile on her face.

Diana bowed her head slightly as a form of greeting.

The woman seemed flustered because of the bow, probably not used to this form of greeting, ’’Director Qin sent me to help you with your duties. If Dr. Warner had another assistant before you then you would have been their successor and they would have taught you all these during the transfer of the duties but since you are his first assistant, I am the one to brief you about everything.’’
