Crashing into an Old Flame
Chapter 70: She loved Maxim

Chapter 70: She loved Maxim

She confessed that she has not completed her residency years and she does not have her qualification proofs with her at the moment so she would like to keep it low.

And the old man agreed even though he found it a pity that she was not a doctor yet. He tried to ask her why she dropped out of medical school but she just dodged the topic.

So, basically, if Maxim felt like she was getting this job depending on favors, it was wrong, right? She genuinely got it with her efforts.

She looked at him a little angrily. Such an unpredictable man. What did he want now? Why did he want to snatch her job?

Feeling her gaze on him, Maxim looked at her and his heart skipped a beat when he saw the look on her face. She looked like an angry puppy.

Did this old man reprimand her a lot? Was that why she was upset?

He narrowed his eyes.

’’Boy, you have no say in this. She is perfect for this job,’’ Old Master Qin stroked his goat beard with sass. His hospital might be one of the most renowned hospitals in LA but it was not everyday that toppers like Diana Chen came to claim the position of assistant.

Regardless of the fact that she quit during her residency years, there was no doubt that she was an academic genius.

For work, she was an asset. For doing Hazel a favor, she was another asset. For being his old friend’s granddaughter, she was like his own granddaughter so that was that.

It was an all-gain, zero-loss kind of deal. He would be a deranged motherfucker if he did not know how to appreciate god’s will.

Maxim was ready to nod at him until he heard his words. He was expecting the old man to readily agree with him.

But his words... made him react a bit slower, ’’What?"

’’What what? I won’t accept anyone else for this job,’’ the old man repeated, looking oddly excited. Looking at Maxim’s reaction, he was more certain that Diana was the most capable person for this job.

Maxim spaced out for a moment before he focused his gaze back on Diana, ’’She doesn’t want to do this job,’’ It was not her type and she was way too delicate to work in the chaos of a hospital.

’’I have accepted it already,’’ Diana gave him another shock.

Maxim blinked as he tilted his head back to look at the old man who eyed him with a gaze that said ’See, I told you.’

Maxim felt like he was missing something. How was the scene so different from what he had visualized?

"So, what do I need to do? What is my job?" Diana felt weird even as the words rolled from the tip of her tongue.

To think that they had yet to discuss the requirements of her job after all this fiasco.

"You are his assistant,’’ The old man said like he was talking about the weather, clearly not knowing the bomb he dropped on the both of them.

"No!" Maxim and Diana said in unison, looking at each other in the process only to discover that they were on the same page for the first time in the whole day.

’’I don’t need an assistant,’’ Maxim said.

"I don’t want to be his assistant,’’ she shifted her attention back to the old man who was focusing on his laptop now.

Was he even listening?

Diana was clueless as to why Maxim said that he did not need an assistant. His statement was not related to her, was it?

Maybe, he liked to work by himself or something like that. She tried to take no offense at that.

Even though Maxim’s reason was unclear but her reasoning was clear as hell. She needed some time to get the fog off her head.

The fog was named ’Maxim Warner’.

Staying with him under the same roof was getting hard as it was.

Don’t get her wrong. She liked staying there. Ivy was there. Logan barely stayed and even if he did, he barely talked but still, his presence was calming instead of being creepy. She loved those people. And Maxim was there too.

She loved Maxim. She truly did but that did not mean she was going to pretend like nothing was wrong.

Lately, her attention was shifting to his body, the way he walked, the way he talked, and if his dimples showed up when he smiled... hell, she was even looking at his forearms, his lips, and well...

Those were not friendly things at all and they were messing with her head.

Hence, unless she got some clarity on her situation, it was better to keep a safe distance.

So, working with him was off-limits.

"Gr... Director Qin, are you listening to me?" Diana stopped herself from addressing him as ’Grandpa Qin’ just in time.

Just like she had put a condition to keep her educational qualifications secret, the old man also asked her to keep it low that she knew him so as to not attract unnecessary attention.

She agreed to it.

Although she did not know Maxim was involved in the people, she needed to keep this secret from but since the old man did not want to reveal that he knew her, she respected his choices.

The old man scoffed, ’’This is not a vegetable market. Get out, you both.’’

Diana speechlessly glanced at Maxim whose expression did not look any better than hers.

The old man was clearly mocking them.

He knew she was not going to lose this job and so he played his cards well and there is no way he was going to budge.

Her late grandfather always used to tell stories about his friends. He would always say how they were all ’stubborn old goats’ just like him.

Diana did not know what it meant back then but now after the live telecast; she had no doubts.

She pursed her lips, ’’Thank you, then,’’ she bowed at the old man.

No matter what, she was not ungrateful. Although she got this job because of her own capabilities but she was thankful that he took that last-minute interview to let her prove herself.
