Crashing into an Old Flame
Chapter 71: Want me to carry you?

Chapter 71: Want me to carry you?

’’Hmph, you are capable. The head nurse will brief you about your duties,’’ the old man waved his hand without raising his head from the laptop.

Once the pair were out of his sight, the old man shifted his attention from the laptop.

The stern expression on his face was replaced by a foxy smile as he dialed a string of familiar numbers on his phone, ’’Your son opposed it with all his might but you should have seen his glowing eyes when I said that she will be working as his assistant. He looked like a dog who chanced upon the tastiest bone by accident.’’

Hazel’s chirpy laughter was heard from the other side of the phone, ’’He is so whipped and he does not even know it. I should not have let them stray away from each other back in the past. Little Ana is the only girl I approve of as my daughter-in-law.’’

Old Master Qin did not feel an ounce of guilt for meddling in the matters of the younger generation as his gossipy nature kicked in, ’’They knew each other before?"

’’Of course, they studied and grew up together.’’

Now that the old man thought about it, one of his friend’s granddaughters indeed used to stay here in the States while his other granddaughter stayed there in Beijing. So, he was always excited when both the girls had a reunion during their vacations.

’’As it turns out, she is someone I know.’’

Hazel let out a surprised gasp, ’’Really?"

’’Of course. Her grandfather was my best friend,’’ Old Master Qin let out a sad sigh at the reminder of the loss of his friend before he changed the topic, ’’Also, you owe me chess matches and my favorite tea.’’

There was a pause on the other side, ’’Eh, Uncle, I barely have time from shopping and partying,’’ Hazel was used to addressing him as Uncle.

’’If you throw those excuses, you better not ask me for help in the future. This old man is far away from his family in Beijing. I feel lonely and this is how you are being hospitable? Hmph.’’

’’Fine, fine, I will plan a get-together. Also, don’t be dramatic. Your grandson is there with you,’’ Hazel grumbled.

’’Ah, it’s enough if that bastard doesn’t lead to my ultimate cardiac arrest,’’ Just the thought of his unruly grandson sent his blood pressure skyrocketing by a notch.

He preferred the Warners’ company over his family. Although Maxim barely uttered some words, but Hazel’s loud talkative nature made up for it. They were the warmest connection that he had after his friend passed away. And now this little girl Diana.

Old Master Qin stroked his goat beard in thought as he hung up. This was so interesting. His lips stretched into a wide smile that could have passed for a toothpaste advertisement in a flash.

...

After they were kicked out of the Director’s office, Diana did not look at Maxim even though she felt his heavy stare at the back of her head.

Instead, she looked around the busy hospital, ’’Where do you think I can find this head nurse?"

In the next moment, a body towered over her as Maxim came to stand in front of her.

She looked at his chest, instead of tilting her head to look at his face.

She focused on the button of his shirt for a moment before shifting her attention towards the opposite wall, ’’I need to know more about the job. So, I should go find her,’’ she hurriedly said and turned around to flee.

But she felt a tight grip on her wrist as Maxim grabbed her hand and pulled her back to the place she was standing earlier.

Diana’s face grew warm and she snatched her hand back as if it was on fire, ’’What are you doing?"

’’What did I do?" Maxim blinked, ’’What are you, a bunny?"

’’Huh?" she frowned.

’’Why are you hopping away from me?"

’’When did I hop away?" the image of her hopping away like some bunny sprouted in her mind and she cringed, ’’I mean... ran away.’’

’’Just now. Even after breakfast earlier this morning,’’ Maxim stated calmly.

Diana let out an exaggerated sigh as she softly spoke, ’’Get away from me first. The people here are staring at us like they can easily grow two more eyes just to stare at us. I don’t want to be the target of your popularity here,’’ she did not know if she was being paranoid but she could literally see the nurses eyeing them until they reached the end wall of the hallway.

This part of the hospital had a crowd but it was not that much compared to the rest of the hospital.

And the only people who passed by this hallway seemed to be the staff members and the doctors.

’’I am not popular. No one is targeting you,’’ Maxim said so convincingly that she almost believed him.

But then her gaze landed on his face and she cursed in her heart.

’’Fine, I get it. Now, I am going to find the head nurse.’’

’’You are coming with me,’’ Maxim stepped back from her.

She raised her hand, swaying her index finger from left to right as she glanced at him provocatively, ’’No, we are at work. No socializing here.’’

His eyes narrowed, ’Unless you want me to ’socialize’ with you right here, in the middle of this hallway or you want me to carry you to my office, follow me.’’

Her lips parted in disbelief, ’’Are you threatening me, Warner?" she crossed her arms in front of her chest challengingly.

He tilted his head to the side and tucked one of his hands inside his pockets as he glanced at her quietly for a moment.

Under his burning stare, Diana’s hands resting on her chest felt sweaty and clammy, ’’W-What?" she did not even know why she stammered when a pair of nurses walked past them, scanning them with wide eyes.
