Chapter 65: It hurts, right?
Chapter 65: It hurts, right?
She did not call Maxim; she did not reach out to him. She changed her number. She gave him enough time and space to reflect on what he said or felt while she licked her own wounds in silence.
What she acknowledged was she did not know what she wanted to do on her career front so she chose this.
Maybe she would find her passion here. She convinced herself.
’’And what else?" Madam Chen smiled.
Diana bit her bottom lips, ’’I should not have said that in front of the reporters. I am sorry. I thought you would not accept it so...’’
’’So, you would control our decisions through the media?’’ Madam Chen pushed herself to her feet, ’’You would use our weakness against us to coerce us into accepting your choices, Diana?"
’’Mom, I... ahh...’’ Diana gasped when the woman grabbed her hair and yanked her head back in a harsh tug.
’’I hate manipulators. I hate hypocrites. Look at you, baby. At times like this when you try to act smart, you are so much like your fucking father. You make me hate you so much,’’ Madam Chen threw a tight slap across her face, ’’Look at you what you are doing, Diana. I treat you so well but why did you have to make a fool of me like that?’’
’’Mom, I...’’ Diana wanted to excuse her behavior but she felt guilty. What her mother said was right. She was afraid that they would not let her do it so she announced it in front of the whole media so that they would be forced to accept her decision.
She pulled her hair out of the woman’s grip a bit forcefully, ’’I am an adult,’’ At the end of the day, she was an adult and she had every right to take her own decisions.
No matter whether she made the right choice or the wrong one and regardless of what crime she committed, nobody had the right to lay a finger on her. Not even the people who gave birth to her.
’’You are not even admitting your mistake?" Madam Chen pinched Diana’s chin harshly as she narrowed her eyes, ’’Since when did you become so lame? That pathetic kid who used to hang out with you is no longer around. Who else is influencing you?"
Diana should not have been surprised that her mother knew every detail of her life. She knew that Maxim was not around anymore.
Her lips thinned at the way her mother addressed him.
’’Mom, are you getting the wrong person?" Diana’s eyes flicked with a spark of anger for the first time in a while as she glanced at her mother who was holding her chin in such a tight grip that it felt like it was about to be crushed, ’’How am I lame when you need my abilities to flaunt in front of your friend circle?"
The woman’s grip on her loosened as she looked at her in disbelief.
It was the first time that Diana argued with her mother like this and while she did not feel proud of it, but she also felt like she had done nothing wrong.
Pushing her boundaries for the woman who was her biological mother seemed to get harder as she grew up. It was suffocating at some point.
Diana turned around to leave the study.
’Crash’
One moment, Diana was reaching for the door. And in the next moment, Madam Chen picked up a chair and swung it at her.
The chair hit her back with a huge force and she felt herself stumbling forward.
Diana’s forehead hit the door and her back trembled in the pain.
She slowly slid down to the floor, clutching her lower back with her palm as her face twisted.
Her breathing turned irregular and her face turned pale.
’’How dare you!" her mother kicked her hips, the stilettos digging into her flesh.
Diana could not feel the pain because the numbing sensation from the chair had yet to leave her body.
The woman did not stop hitting her and she had no strength to resist.
The door to the study was pushed open.
’’I heard sounds...’’ Daisy stopped talking when her gaze landed on Diana whose body had curled up in pain as she lay there, drenched in a cold sweat. Blood was trickling down her forehead.
She glanced at her mother who was bending down to throw a slap at Diana’s face, unperturbed by the interference.
Daisy gasped, ’’Stop it.’’
But the woman did not stop as she continued hitting Diana.
Daisy grabbed the woman’s wrist with a deathly grip, ’’I said stop it, Mrs. Chen.’’
’’This is none of your business,’’ Madam Chen said in displeasure, ’’Get out of here.’’
Daisy’s grip tightened further as she stepped in front of the woman, shielding her younger sister, ’’If you ever lay your hand on her again, I will crush these delicate fingers of yours without a second thought,’’ she said coldly as she applied more pressure on her wrist.
Madam Chen’s face contoured in pain.
’’It hurts right?" Daisy gave her a slight push, ’’What you did to her hurts too. Get out of my sight before I do something we all might regret,’’ her eyes narrowed.
Madam Chen gritted her teeth. ’’Diana, see me later.’’
’’She will not see you! Just get lost!"
After the woman left, Daisy knelt in front of Diana as she gently tried to help her up, ’’God, just look at you. So messy,’’ her voice was soft despite the chastising.
Diana pouted, trying to suppress the pain, ’’Why are you back?’’ She whispered.
’’I left a few things here. Who could have known I would find a damsel in distress waiting for me?" Daisy’s heart ached for her, ’’I was very surprised when I heard that you are getting into medical school. Have you moved on from writing? Or are you doing this because of Maxim?" she tried to distract her as she helped her outside the study.
