Crashing into an Old Flame

Chapter 64: 1 year later

Diana panted by the time she reached the library.

She spotted Maxim sitting with a girl in the corner most table. They were sitting opposite each other and Maxim’s back was facing Diana.

Diana’s footsteps slowed down when she saw the girl leaning across the table towards Maxim as she smiled sweetly and held his hand.

She completely stopped in her tracks. She was close enough to be able to hear the girl giggling.

’’...I never hated you though,’’ the girl said with a helpless sigh, ’’What bothered me was how that girl clung to you all the time.’’

The ’that girl’ she mentioned was her, right? It could not be anyone else other than her. Diana bit her bottom lips. Clung to Maxim? He said the same thing to his mother and now it seems like everyone thinks the same.

’’But since the day our eyes met for the first time, I knew we would end up here,’’ the girl tilted her chin and met Diana’s eyes in a challenge as she continued speaking, ’’Dating each other. How exciting.’’

Just as Maxim moved, Diana turned around and stepped out of the library.

By the time she reached the house, it was past noon. She kicked off her shoes, threw the bag on the floor, and strode towards the refrigerator.

Diana took out a water bottle and slapped the water on her face till her skin went so numb that she could not feel anything.

"Young Miss, what would you like to have for snacks and then tonight?" Aunty Zhang asked from behind as she placed the bag of vegetables on the kitchen counter.

Diana did not stop washing her face.

’’Young Miss?" the lady approached her, asking her in a gentle voice. As Diana turned around, Aunty Zhang gasped, ’’Young Miss, what happened to your face? Why do you look so red? Are you sick...?" her gaze drifted off to the bottled cold water in her hand and confusion appeared on her face.

Diana approached the woman, the bottle in her hand slipped to the floor as she hugged Aunty Zhang, ’’I treated you so well, didn’t I? Didn’t I always see you like my family?" A soft sob broke out from her throat as she repeated, ’’I was so good to you. Why would you do that to me?"

Aunty Zhang stiffened.

Diana sobbed harder, ’’What did I do to deserve any of this, Aunty Zhang? Why?’’ Sobs ripped through her chest as her body shook, ’’Why must everyone do this to me?" Tears fell from her eyes as she pulled back from the woman and staggered towards her room.

Aunty Zhang glanced at the girl’s retreating back as she stepped away. Every step weaker than before. A hint of guilt appeared in her eyes as she glanced at the girl who lacked her usual warmth. If I did not have a family to feed then...

It took her a moment to compose her expressions. She pursed her lips and started cleaning the kitchen quietly.

Diana walked inside her room and fell on the bed on her face.

From the corner of her eyes, she saw the extra notes that she had prepared for Maxim.

She slowly sat up on the bed and snatched the notebooks as she opened them. The tears blurred her vision as she glanced at her delicate handwriting, the side notes, the highlights... She gently stroked the pages, running her fingers over the notes at the side where she had dropped cute flowers and hearts just to irritate him a little.

’Rip’

Diana tore off the page.

She wiped her tears with the back of her hand before she tore off more and more pages from the thick notebook till all the pages were lying ripped and crumpled on the floor.

’’I hate you. I hate you,’’ More angry tears fell from her eyes as she threw the cover of her notebook and buried her face in the pillow, ’’I hate you...’’ she sobbed.

And I would never talk to you.

I’d hate you forever.

...

1 year later.

All the promises she had made to her tears 1 year ago seemed futile as she found herself standing in Beijing’s topmost medical school.

It has been over a month since her parents’ wedding anniversary when she announced in front of the media that, unlike her elder sister, she was not going to study business. She was enrolling in a medical school.

Her parents were so shocked that she could feel it in their gazes even without looking at them.

Everyone was shocked.

The younger daughter of the business tycoon, Helian Chen, wanted to become a doctor. Save people. This and that and all those great novel things were circulated all over the tabloids before her father stopped the news in a few hours.

Her mother surprisingly smiled and said she supported all her decisions and would let her do what she wanted. In front of the cameras.

And everyone sang praises for their happy family of four.

Daisy left soon after the party. While they have been on talking terms since their major argument a year ago, but they have been walking on eggshells around each other. Diana could feel the distance between them.

After the guests and reporters left their mansion, her father went on a business trip. Not before he gave her a disappointed look though. Clearly, he was not happy with her choices.

Her mother on the hand was surprisingly calm and she called Diana over to the study.

’’Why a doctor?" she had asked.

’’Because I am not interested in business,’’ Diana refused to admit to herself that she was not interested in being a doctor either.

She wanted to be a doctor. Why else would she work that hard to be able to get into Beijing’s top medical school?

She refused to acknowledge the fact that there was once a guy who told her that it was his dream place. She refused to acknowledge that the thought of crossing paths with him again was what kept her going throughout the year.
