Chapter 62: Sinking ship
Chapter 62: Sinking ship
Maxim was attending the exams for the next year to graduate early.
Diana did not believe it initially when she heard it from one person but almost everyone in their class was talking about it.
Some people even glared at her for keeping it a secret for so long. They said that they were surprised when they heard it from the professors.
Diana wanted to tell them that unlike them, she was not surprised. She felt shocked beyond anything. But in the end, she only flashed a bitter smile at them.
So, just like that, her determination to only focus on upcoming exams and ignore everything else, for the time being, was crushed to death.
She found herself standing in front of Warners’ warm abode.
Hazel Warner opened the door and her eyes lit up when she saw her, ’’Little Ana! Oh, what a sweet surprise. Come in~"
Diana forced herself to return the woman’s kind smile even though it felt like her insides were turning and twisting.
If he graduated while she was still in university, he would go to his dream medical school. As his friend, she should have been excited for him, but was she? No, she was not.
She did not know what she was feeling. Maxim could do it. She knew he could easily graduate in advance but was she here to check on his progress? No.
She was so selfish that she was here with the hope that he was going to deny the rumors. She hoped that he would tell her that the professors misunderstood him, and being the stingy speaker that he was, he did not waste his words to clarify the rumors and he was waiting for her to help him clarify them as usual.
"Let me tell him that you are here...’’ Hazel guided her towards the old couch in the living room.
’’I can go to him,’’ Diana said, instead of taking a seat.
Hazel pressed on her shoulder and made her sit on the couch, ’’No, you sit here,’’ the woman could not help but say defensively.
Maxim has been studying inside his room during the hours he is not working outside. Haze; had no idea what kind of appearance her son was sporting behind closed doors but one thing she was sure of was that she wanted him to look presentable enough before he came to meet Diana.
After all, it was not every day she met someone who made her want to have a daughter-in-law.
Her ship had yet to sail decently. There was no way Hazel wanted rocks and pebbles thrown at it. It was currently in its paper stage so she took the matter into her hands.
Hazel knocked on Maxim’s door twice before stepping inside.
Maxim was sitting on the windowsill with a book in his hand.
Hazel scanned her son from head to toe. No matter which angle she looked from, he looked like he freshly stepped out of a painting.
Like the proud momma that she was, she puffed her chest when her son eyed her strangely, ’’What is it, mom?" he asked her helplessly under her intense gaze.
’’Little Ana is here,’’ Hazel cleared her throat, ’’Let me call her inside first—’’
’’There is no need. Tell her I am sick or something.’’
Hazel’s brows tugged together, ’’What is this behavior? That poor thing is here to meet you in such freezing weather and you suddenly feel like acting cocky.’’
’’She is annoying and meddlesome, mom,’’ Maxim focused on the book in his hand, ’’I did care for her and she was my friend but the thing is, it is frustrating at times to handle her. I get irked. And the last thing I want to focus on right now is her. Too distracting,’’ his voice was laced with disdain.
Hazel gasped, ’’You... keep your tone down,’’ she narrowed her eyes, ’’Go out right now and meet her. I am not taking ’no’ for an answer. We can deal with your mood swings and tantrums later.’’
Maxim frowned as he glanced at his mother. After a long time, he opened his mouth to speak, ’’When I was young, you wanted me to keep quiet when I was being cornered in school. You asked me to tolerate it for the time being because we could not afford troubles at that time and you did not want me to be expelled because while they were rich and influential, I was, am, nothing. I agreed. I acted the way you wanted.’’
Hazel did not know why her son brought it up but her heart ached when she thought about those days. She wished she could have given him a better childhood. Only if she was more capable.
Maxim tilted his head to look out of the window as he continued speaking, ’’I am not a child anymore, mom. You do not need to keep telling me how I should act,’’ his voice was polite yet clipped, letting Hazel know how much this topic was affecting him.
She sighed, ’’You know I did not mean it like that...’’
...
Diana who was standing outside the door did not hear anything after that as warm tears blurred her vision.
She stepped back from the room.
’She is annoying’
’Meddlesome’
’I DID care for her. She WAS my friend.’
Was that how he thought of her?
Diana wiped her tears and went back to sit on the couch quietly.
After a few seconds, she heard approaching footsteps so she raised her head.
Maxim’s mother stroked her hair.
Diana smiled at her, ’’Auntie?"
She sighed, ’’You are such a good girl...’’ she mumbled unconsciously.
Diana blinked at her, looking confused.
’’Oh, Max said he is not feeling well. He is... afraid of infecting you,’’ Hazel said, the guilt for Diana and anger for Maxim burning brighter than LED lights in her eyes,
It was obvious that she was not used to lying.
Diana pushed herself to her feet, ’’No worries, Auntie. I need to revise for exams too. Tell him I miss him. I will see him later,’’ she bowed to the woman.
Hazel kissed the girl’s cheek. As she watched her walking out of the apartment, for some mysterious reason, Hazel felt like her ship was going to sink.
She shook her head, to ward off the unlucky thoughts.
