Chapter 61: Shocking revelations

Daisy was not coming for her birthday. And maybe their father would be absent too.

Seeing that her mother was not in a bad mood, she probed, ’’Dad is not coming?"

After she was done fixing her hair, Madam Chen put on an exquisite diamond necklace, ’’Since I have invited the media, I guess he will be here for the public appearance.’’

Diana’s lips parted. W-What?

’’But then again, that might have been the first time he was discovered. That doesn’t mean he never had affairs before,’’ Madam Chen smiled, ’’So, you see, baby, life is not all about sunshine and rainbows. There are thunderstorms too. It was too late for me to go back to work and you were very young so I chose to stay at home and take care of you both. Then at some point, I lost touch with my passion and got over it as if it was some phase.’’

Diana felt her heart aching at the thought of it. She did not even have a dream yet but she did not know how it felt to give up on something you had chased for so long.

’’I come from a prestigious family. Your father gets the best trophy wife and his reputation soars. He is rich, and I get my bills paid while I maintain my socialite lifestyle,’’ Madam Chen walked towards the bed as she sat beside Diana.

She raised her hand.

Diana closed her eyes on instinct but the expected slap did not come.

Diana slowly opened her eyes and she found her mother hesitating for a moment before she put her hand on her back, ’’I had to go through a lot of hurdles along the way in this marriage, and somewhere along the way, I could not be a good mother to you. I know it.’’

Diana’s eyes widened and her nose turned sour as she heard her mother’s gentle voice. She could not forgive the woman for many of her actions but her words were somehow comforting her aching heart.

’’I am sorry. I will try to be better from now on,’’ Madam Chen reached out to hug her.

Diana pushed herself to her feet as if she did not see her movements, ’’I will take a nap before the party starts.’’

She left the room, leaving Madam Chen looking at her hands which were extended towards the place where Diana was sitting just now.

She glanced at the empty doorway for another moment before she placed her hands down. She adjusted her necklace again, ’’She must be tired,’’ Sighing softly, she pushed herself to her feet.

Diana, who was leaning against the wall outside, broke down in tears when she heard that.

She felt like a bad person for breaking her own mother’s heart on her birthday but she did not know what to do with the onslaught of her emotions.

She was already affected by everything around her and in the back of her head, there was another nagging voice that told her that it was not that she was unable to contact Maxim. He was the one trying to keep his distance from her. Was he still angry? Did he think she was meddlesome? Was he ignoring her? The thought of it made her heart feel suffocated.

And as if it was not enough, she discovered other things.

Her father cheated on her mother? Her mother gave up on her career for Daisy and her? The empty mansion? Her mother’s apology and promise?

She wanted to hug the woman but what if she suddenly changed her mind and decided to hit her? How was she going to replace the bad memories in her head?

Throughout the party, Diana felt complicated.

Towards the end of the party, her father came and her parents posed in front of the camera like they wanted another wedding ceremony because they could not contain their overflowing love for each other.

Diana wanted to leave the next day but her mother stopped her.

And the consecutive days were like living the dream her younger self used to see. Her mother took her shopping, buying her the best clothes and diamonds, the woman cooked for her, spent time with her, and discussed life with her.

Her younger self would have been over the moon. She was happy too, she felt warm despite the lingering sadness in her heart.

She could not be gladder that her mother was beginning to change her ways.

One week turned into two and two to four.

The final exams were starting the day after tomorrow. Diana had studied during her stay in the Chen Mansion but she often found herself distracted when she thought about the number of automatically disconnected calls on her phone.

It almost looked like...

Diana did not want to believe her conjecture but she did not know how else she could think about it.

Did Maxim block her?

He seemed angry that day. She had never seen him that angry before but later, they hugged it out. Did he change his mind and deemed her as annoying for interfering?

Diana did not know.

And for now, she only needed to focus on her impending exams, without thinking about anything else.

The next day, she went to the university to collect her admit card and other related study materials, totally not knowing that she would get the shock of the year.
