Chapter 59: One of my charity cases

And he watched as her eyes widened at his words.

It was sinking in her head, wasn’t it? Her long-time platonic best friend’s not-so-platonic feelings were finally seeping in, weren’t they?

She looked like a deer caught in headlights. Hell, so pretty.

And yet, it took her a moment to compose herself, ’’Gosh, I feel so lucky to have you in my life as my friend,’’ she mumbled.

Maxim: "..." Was she downright stupid or she lacked EQ? Which one of the things he said sounded friendly to her?

He was itching to ask.

’’Did you think I would say something like that?" Diana rolled her eyes and closed the distance between them as she wrapped her hands around his neck.

With her high heels, he was still a head taller so she tilted her head and pressed her chin on his shoulder, and hugged him tightly.

’’You are so silly, Warner. You are the one who went through so much yet you have the nerve to think about me first,’’ she whispered, swaying him side to side with the hug like she was coaxing a goddamned toddler.

’’Diana...’’

’’Sssh, I know I know I was wrong. I won’t act on impulse ever again,’’ she cut him off.

And just like that, his ’impulse’ to speak his mind was splashed with cold water.

Didn’t he say he would take everything and anything she gave him? Greedily?

Even if it was just her friendship?

He glanced at his hands hanging by his sides before he raised them slowly and wrapped them around her waist, pulling her closer to him, ’’Alright, don’t do that again.’’

Diana nodded quietly, ’’I won’t.’’

’’Good.’’

’’Okay.’’

’’Fine.’’

Diana cleared her throat, ’’Let me treat your wound? Your forehead is still bleeding.’’

’’No, stay like this.’’

Diana was speechless, ’’Why are you acting like a grump?" But she still hugged him tighter and patted his back.

’’Young Miss?"

Diana stiffened when she heard the familiar voice. She tilted her head to the side.

From above Maxim’s shoulder, she noticed that the half-ajar door was pushed open and Aunty Zhang was standing at the doorway while holding vegetable bags.

Instead of letting her go, Maxim first adjusted the side of her dress that looked crumpled by the hug. Then he stepped back from her.

He nodded at Aunty Zhang politely. Since Diana had always praised the woman for being kind to her, Maxim tried his best to keep his ’I don’t like to socialize’ face in check.

Diana tugged at his sleeve, ’’You should go to a hospital first. I wanted to treat your wound but we don’t know if this is something serious.’’

’’It’s fine.’’

Diana stared at him.

’’Alright, I will go to a hospital,’’ Maxim sighed.

’’Good,’’ Diana said to him.

’’Take care,’’ he mumbled. Feeling a constant gaze fixated on them, he did not say anything as he walked out of the door.

As soon as he was gone, Aunty Zhang gasped, ’’Young Miss, what happened to your friend?"

’’Nothing, it was a small accident,’’ Diana leaned back on the wall as she crossed her arms in front of her chest, ’’Do you have something else that you want to ask?" she asked the woman who seemed to be fidgeting.

Aunty Zhang blushed, ’’It is a matter of young people but I am very curious. Are you two... umm what do they call it... Are you two dating?’’

So that you can report it to mom? Diana laughed, ’’Of course not. What are you talking about?"

’’You have both been close to each other since you were young and you care a lot for him,’’ Aunty Zhang looked confused, ’’Young Miss, don’t you see the way he looks at you?"

’’Don’t you see the way I evade his advances?" Diana stood straighter.

Aunty Zhang’s eyes widened, ’’Young Miss, you...’’

’’Yes. Growing up, I have always been a charitable person. I easily feel bad for animals and even people like these,’’ Diana shrugged, ’’When I first met him, he was being bullied so I took pity on him. We became friends and I don’t necessarily find it a bad thing to be friends with the topper. You can count him as one of my charity cases. That’s the whole deal."

’’Yes yes yes. He is not worthy of our young Miss in the other way,’’ Aunty Zhang hurriedly said when she saw the displeased expression on her face.

’’How could you even think about us dating and all? So pathetic,’’ Diana flipped her hair and walked inside her room.

Aunty Zhang panicked, ’’Young Miss, what are you eating for dinner?"

’’Nothing. You ruined my mood!" Diana closed the door with a loud ’Bang’.

As soon as the door closed, her face scrunched up in disgust. There were this rare times like these when she wanted to be as impulsive as her sister and commit arson or something.

The words she uttered outside left a bitter taste in her mouth. She hated herself for having to utter any of those nonsensical things she said but she knew she could not go with lighter words knowing that every bit and piece of information will be relayed to her mother.

After sulking in her room for some time, Diana wanted to go to meet her bodyguard but she received an unexpected call.

’’Dad,’’ Diana listened to the man being disappointed about her actions. As expected, Robin had already reported to him about today.

Once her father was done grumbling about how wrong she was, how he did not give birth to her for this, how she was wasting his resources blah blah, she finally opened her mouth, ’’I have known him since high school, dad. I know I am wrong. I should not have acted on impulse but what’s done is done. I am so sorry for troubling you,’’ Diana kept clenching and unclenching the pillow in her hand, ’’But I am afraid those people will hold a grudge against me, Dad. They glared at me before leaving. I regret my actions already. I am so scared. What if they come after me?" her voice was shaky and timid.

Heaving a soft sigh, Master Chen spoke up, ’’Now see why I scold you? You don’t need to meddle in others’ matters. It will only land you in trouble,’’ he paused for a moment before adding, ’’Your mother’s birthday is coming up. Are you coming back?"

’’Yes. Will you be there?" Diana asked him softly.

’’No, I am very busy.’’

Diana opened her mouth to say something but in the end, she decided against it.
