Chapter 58: His angel

Chapter 58: His angel

Surprisingly, before she could start her ’Mission coax Maxim’, the subject of her mission moved. He walked out of the car and stepped around it before opening the door for her.

Diana gaped at him for a moment before she alighted the car as he put his palm near the roof just in case she hit her head while stepping out.

’’Thanks...’’ Her words were yet to finish when he held her wrist and dragged her inside the building.

Diana turned around to glance at her bodyguard who was sitting in the car’s seat with an incomprehensible expression on his face, ’I will talk to you later. Stay put till then’ she mouthed, knowing well enough that the guards in her family were well-trained.

As expected, the man read her lips and nodded at her.

But she did not believe that he was going to stay put and not inform her father.

Diana tried to keep up with Maxim’s pace but he obviously had long legs and one of his steps amounted to two of hers.

She almost twisted her foot when he suddenly slowed his pace and let her catch up to him.

They stepped inside the elevator and she wanted to talk to him but there were other people in there.

So, she quietly stood there with her hand being held by him.

He entered the floor and by the time they reached her floor, the elevator was almost empty.

Maxim pulled her out with him. While his actions seemed rushed and harsh, he was not hurting her. His hold was firm yet gentle.

She let him pull her.

As his footsteps slowed down in front of the apartment, she accessed her fingerprint.

The door opened with a ’click’ and as soon as they stepped inside, he pinned her to the wall near the shoe rack.

Diana’s lips parted as an unconscious gasp slipped past her mouth, ’’What—’’

’’Why?" Maxim mouthed, his voice holding unrestrained anger, ’’Why would you do that?"

’’What why?" Diana frowned, equally angry, ’’If it was you, would you have left me there to die?" her gaze shifted to the trail of blood on the side of his head and her voice softened towards the end.

’’I don’t care, Diana. I don’t give a damn if I am dying,’’ Maxim’s voice was almost pained as he pressed his forehead against hers, ’’There is no way I am making you suffer with me.’’

’’You didn’t make me suffer,’’ she softly said, raising her head to pat his shoulder to comfort him, ’’I was there because I knew nothing would happen to me.’’

’’I still don’t care,’’ Maxim breathed, pressing his forehead against hers as he closed his eyes.

Up so close she could see his eyelashes that did not look this dense from afar. She was frustrated with his same ’I don’t care’ phrase. Why was he repeating it like a broken tape recorder?

’’Then what is it that you care about?" About reprimanding me and shouting at me over nothing? She wanted to add but she was afraid of inciting more arguments.

’’About you,’’ Maxim looked straight into her eyes as he heard the sound of his heart thudding inside his chest. He had felt this since the first time he saw her. All heart beating, heart skipping, warmth, sweetness, everything and every feeling that he had never felt before, the feelings that he had always lacked, she was the one who brought them to him.

Not once. Not twice. She did it everyday and she did not even know it.

Diana sighed, ’’I know you care about me but—’’

’’No, you don’t, Ana. You don’t know anything,’’ he pulled back from her as he held her hand habitually. He brought it closer to his mouth and placed a gentle kiss near the corner of her wrist.

It has been a long time since this started. Whenever he kissed her hand, she believed he did it to comfort her.

But she did not know that he wanted to do much more than this to comfort her when she was down. Much more. Yet this was all she was letting him have and he took it greedily.

And he wanted to give her much more than just comfort.

If a chaste kiss on her wrist was all she was going to give, then he would still cherish it with all his heart.

She did not know the thoughts that ran through his head when she casually touched him, when she invaded his space, when she looked into his eyes, when she joked, when she teased him, when she laughed... He was obsessed with her and she did not even know.

Her younger self was like a ball of warmth in his life. But as she grew up, every curve of her body, every arch of her brows, every tilt of her lips burnt like a fire in his heart. Warming the cold inside yet torturing him in the sweetest possible way.

If he told her how his heart raced when her eyes wandered to him, would she ever look his way again?

Would she ever spare him one of her beautiful smiles knowing the thoughts her lips provoked in him?

They were no longer kids. No longer were her touches as innocent as they used to be. They did things to him. Would she still touch him if he told her that?

Would she, huh?

’’You don’t know a single thing,’’ Maxim whispered, his voice hoarse. He kissed her wrist yet again, all the while looking into her eyes, ’’If you knew, you should have known that I’d rather end up in the hospital with broken bones than have you step inside that empty alley. You should have known that I’d rather die than have a scratch on you. If you knew, you should have stayed the hell out of danger!" the anger in his tone did not match the possessiveness that he had tried to hide.

He had never believed in the existence of angels until he met her. She was so perfect and untainted. She was his angel, his happiness.

His life was far from perfect. He was not even worthy of having her stand in front of him. They did not belong to the same world.

But the urge to pull her into his world was consuming him.
