Chapter 57: My poor sheep

Chapter 57: My poor sheep

’’If you don’t leave right at this moment, then we are not talking ever again. I am so done with you,’’ Maxim’s tone was cold.

Diana froze. Did he want her to stay out of his business that badly?

Maxim’s heart ached. But he did not reach out to her. If this was what it took to send her away then so be it.

’’As touched as we are by your interaction, girl, leave right this moment if you don’t want to end up with broken bones,’’ Brother John spoke up as he rolled the bat in his hand.

Diana straightened up and walked out from hiding behind Maxim’s back.

As he watched her stepping away, the light in Maxim’s eyes dimmed slightly but he let out a relieved sigh until...

’’I. Am. Not. Leaving,’’ Diana glanced at the men with a tilt of her chin, ’’Go ahead and beat me along with him,’’ her voice provocative.

The relieved sigh lodged back into Maxim’s throat like a fishbone.

’’Capture her,’’ the other two men moved towards her.

Maxim rushed towards Diana but Brother John stuck the bat near his leg.

Maxim lost his balance, the side of his head hitting the wall behind him as the blood trailed down.

Maxim never found his life to be more pathetic before as much as he did at this moment.

The person he wanted to protect the most was in danger because of him.

’’Robin, are you going to show up after I die for sure?" Diana gulped. She should have taken the fighting lessons more seriously like Daisy.

Just when her words dropped, her lean and sturdy bodyguard jumped out of the shrubs like an assassin in ancient times. He tackled the men who were about to reach her.

Diana heaved a huge sigh and ran towards Maxim.

’’Careful,’’ Maxim pulled her into his arms, ’’You are wearing heels.’’

Diana did not whether to laugh or cry, ’’You are bleeding! You have the nerve to think about me,’’ she pulled him with her towards their car which was parked in the other alley.

The other man tried to reach them but Robin kicked his back, throwing him off to the ground.

Robin was a professional hence it was not that hard for him to tackle the three of them who did not seem to be trained given their clumsy movements.

After being beaten blue and black, they ran away from the spot.

By the time Robin came back to the car, he found the young man sitting silently while their young miss tried to coax him to talk to her.

"..." He was a bit speechless.

He did not understand what was going on. Logically, shouldn’t he be thankful that she saved him like that?

But it was not his place to comprehend the young generation’s ways.

He placed a hand on the steering wheel, ’’Young Miss.’’

Diana tilted her head to look at her bodyguard.

Looking at his face, she knew what he wanted to say.

She shook her head slightly.

She did what she felt was right at that moment. It was not the right time to think about the consequences.

’’Drive us to the apartment,’’ she said.

It barely took them around 15 minutes to reach the apartment but the whole ride was drowned in silence.

Diana felt unsettled because Maxim kept looking out of the window.

Not once did he look at her or talk to her.

She knew that she should not have crossed the line but at that moment when she saw him in danger, she knew there was no going back.

When he left the classroom, she had intended to follow him. So, she confirmed with her bodyguard and she was assured that he would appear if she was in any kind of danger.

Robin was confused why she was asking for his job profile but Diana did not bother to explain anything.

Robin was the backup plan that she had made for worse. In her heart, she wished that Maxim just had some monetary issues. She could not hand him out the money directly but she could have arranged for some other way to send the money to him.

While she was inclined to believe that whatever issue he had, it could be solved by money but a small part of her heart was unsettled after seeing the wounds on him last time.

Hence she was relieved that she had a bodyguard.

When she eavesdropped on their conversation, she realized that they were loan sharks and it did not take her long to realize the crux of the matter.

Maxim must have taken a loan for his studies. Getting into this prestigious university needed an abundant amount just for the first semester of admissions.

While the amount of money did not matter to people in the Chen family who were used to having furniture costlier than that, it was not the same for others.

And what’s more, Maxim could not have taken a loan from the bank. He was not qualified for that yet given that he was not even employed.

Knowing him, he would not involve his mother in this.

So, he resorted to loan sharks.

From his words, it sounded like he had already paid off his debt with interest. But they were demanding another bout of extravagant interest.

Even if she helped him pay it off, they would pester him for more money.

While Diana had not encountered such people but that was basic human nature.

Those who did something illegal once won’t shy away from doing it twice. Everyone likes easy money and Maxim was an easy target for people like those.

’My poor sheep’ she pouted while looking at his side profile, feeling her heartache.

Hence, Diana put herself there knowing well enough that Robin would not meddle unless she was involved.

And after being beaten like that, she doubted they would come back for him. Even if they did, she had a way.

As the car pulled out in front of the apartment, Diana was ready to start coaxing Maxim again to come upstairs with her and get the wound on his head treated.
