Crashing into an Old Flame
Chapter 304: Why did it matter?

Chapter 304: Why did it matter?

’’You wanted to do this yesterday?’’ Maxim laughed, but the smile did not reach his eyes, ’’You were fine with everything till last night, and things changed now?"

And something seemed to be tormenting him when she did not even bat an eyelid before responding to him, ’’It was fine when we were being friends with benefits. Dating comes with emotional complications that I did not ask for.’’

Dating comes with emotional complications that I did not ask for.

Every word was like a shard of glass digging through his heart and slicing it in ruthlessly.

’’We have had our fair share of fun. You did and I did as well. But it is complicated for us to continue given the current circumstances. I don’t want to go home and argue with my family every other day.’’

’’And you could not tell me about this before because?" Maxim asked, his voice hollow and lost, unrecognizable to his own ears.

’’Because I did not want to ruin our friendship.’’

Maxim chuckled, the hint of mockery in his laughter pierced her ears, just like it had been in the earlier days when they did not get along, ’’Friendship is not the only thing that you are ruining right now, Diana,’’ the words left his mouth in a whisper but he knew she heard him anyway given the way her eyes widened slightly but if she did, she did not respond to them.

’Ding’

’Ding’

The repetitive sound of notifications on Maxim’s phone broke the tension in the air.

Maxim was about to ignore it but then he saw the slight change in Diana’s expression. He pulled his phone out of his pocket and as expected her gaze settled on the phone in his hand.

She was trying to be discreet but she was not.

What got her so worried when he was the one who received texts on his phone?

He observed her face as he checked the phone only to find an unknown number being displayed on the phone.

There were two voice notes that he received.

Maxim glanced at Diana once again before he pressed on the play and a familiar voice started sounding from the phone.

’You have both been close to each other since you were young and you care a lot for him. Young Miss, don’t you see the way he looks at you?’

Diana’s face changed the moment she heard those words. It was as if she was taken back to that time years ago when she had no control over things in her life and all she could do was manipulate her words and situations to protect herself. The time where she was so pathetic that even she pitied herself.

Followed by the question, Diana’s soft voice rang out.

’Growing up, I have always been a charitable person. I easily feel bad for animals and even people like these. When I first met him, he was being bullied so I took pity on him. We became friends and I don’t necessarily find it a bad thing to be friends with the topper. You can count him as one of my charity cases. That’s the whole deal...’

’’Stop it!"

Maxim did not bat an eyelid.

’’I said stop it!" Diana snapped, eyes reddening.

Maxim stopped the recording.

’’This is not the first time I heard this anyway. Don’t bother,’’ he said calmly.

His words had her eyes widening. Not the first time. And suddenly, all the events of the past seemed to have become clearer in her mind. Things started making sense.

Wasn’t it right after that day she could not catch hold of Maxim? He seemed to have disappeared from her life?

Eventually, it was only 6 years later did they meet when she was in a crisis along with Angel.

"Do you have something that you want to say?" Maxim asked, putting his phone back in his pocket, his gaze searching her face for something.

’’No,’’ she shook her head.

"I said what I had to say. Let’s end this. Let us break up,’’ Diana turned to leave.

’’But before that, won’t you admit that your statement all those years ago was wrong to some extent?"

Maxim’s words had her halting in her tracks.

’’Why else would you fuck someone you just pitied? Like you said, we have had our fair share of fun,’’ the man approached her and lowered his head to whisper right beside her ear, ’’It seems I was not just a charity case after all.’’

Diana’s lips parted, disbelief filling her eyes as she turned around to face the man, ’’All that you did... Everything that happened between us... Was it all just for what I said back then?"

Maxim could feel the discomfort of her words settling in his chest and the urge to hold her in his arms overwhelmed him out of nowhere.

But he stepped back from her instead.

"Why does it matter anymore?" Maxim chuckled, even as the turmoil inside him intensified.

Why did it matter what it was when she wanted to end it anyway?

In that moment, he wanted nothing more than to go against her will, throw her above his shoulder and take her to some stranded island where he could keep her to him, for him, till she changed her mind and decided that he was ’it’ for her and she never wanted them to end.

That was the happiness that he had always sought, the one he would always seek.

But she did not want that. Space was what she needed from him.

And Maxim did not know when and how someone else’s happiness became so significant to him, even over his own.

He did not even realize when he started doing things for her. Going to her when she wanted him closer and going away from her when she did not want him.

But a part of him had always known that she was just his delusion, a twisted fantasy and unreal dream which would eventually shatter one day. The paranoid part of his soul had always feared her absence, it had feared the day she would not want to be his anymore.
