Chapter 303: Let’s end this

But the moment she looked up, her face turned nonchalant and frigid, ’’Don’t expect me to thank you.’’

’’Don’t worry, Alice. No matter what my needs are and how desperate I am, I won’t come to you,’’ Helian Chen said indifferently as he tucked a hand in his pocket, ’’When have I ever done that before? And... on what basis would I ever do that?"

He turned around and left the room the moment he finished speaking, leaving Alice in the huge room that seemed to be gradually closing in on her.

Unknowingly, a drop of tear slid down her cheek as she looked at the closed door. A fleeting memory passed by in her head but before she could grasp it, it disappeared completely.

The door opened after a few minute and Alice’s bodyguard bowed to her, ’’Young Miss has left with that man.’’

That piece of information immediately distracted Alice.

’’She is testing my limits, isn’t she?" Alice’s eyes darkened, ’’Have that thing arranged. I would want to see what kind of man would want to stay with a woman after being humiliated to that extent.’’

...

The gloom in the sky somehow resembled the gloom in her heart.

That was what Diana realized the moment she stepped out of the Chen Manor. She wrapped her arms around her body, hugging herself to prevent the cold as she walked.

She had just taken a few steps out of the gates when a warm coat was wrapped around her shoulders.

Diana looked up and she was met with the familiar onyx eyes that mesmerized her every time just by one single look.

Maxim’s gaze was soft. So soft that it melted her. So soft that it made all her anxieties disappear in a moment. So soft that... it shattered her heart into tiny little pieces.

As she looked at him in a daze, he frowned, ’’Are you sick?"

He raised his hand to touch her forehead but before he could reach her skin, she backed from his touch.

’’I am not,’’ Diana avoided his gaze.

Maxim’s frown got deeper, ’’You left without a word. I could not stop worrying about you,’’ he placed a hand on her lower back and guided her towards his car.

After helping her inside the passenger seat, Maxim walked to the other side and entered the car.

Diana was looking out of the windshields when an outstretched hand appeared in front of her.

Maxim was holding a discreet black box.

’’What is it?" Diana turned to look at him blankly without making any move to receive it from him.

’’I assume you don’t have a phone considering I have not received much of a call or text from you in the past few days. So, I got this for you,’’ When she still did not receive it, he gave it a second thought before speaking up, ’’Don’t worry. I have arranged it such that you still have your old number. You haven’t lost anything."

’’Thanks,’’ Diana took it from his hand and leaned back on the seat before closing her eyes.

’’There was something I wanted to show you.’’

’’What is it?" Diana turned her head to the side, not once looking at him.

’’I will show you later,’’ Maxim sighed.

’’Okay.’’

Maxim glanced at the woman as the loose strands of her hair framed her face, ’’Was everything fine at home?" he eyed the bag that she had slung over her shoulder, ’’If you want, we can...’’ go back and talk to your parents.

’’Mm,’’ she cut him off.

Maxim reached out to tuck her hair behind her ear, ’’Tired?’’

Diana stiffened, ’’Yes.’’

’’Alright, take a nap.’’

Just as he stepped on the accelerator, her words rang out, ’’Take me to Daisy’s place.’’

Maxim’s brows tugged together when he heard that. He wanted to say something but at the sight of her exhausted face, he did not utter a word, ’’Sure.’’

The drive to Daisy’s condominium was drowned in silence. Neither of them spoke a single word to each other nor did Diana look at him.

The moment the car pulled over, Diana opened her eyes and proceeded to step out of the car but Maxim captured her wrist.

’’What’s wrong?" his eyes narrowed.

’’What?" Diana averted her gaze.

’’It has barely been a few hours since we parted in the morning. What made you act like this?" Maxim’s scanned her from head to toe before he met her gaze, ’’What is wrong with you?"

’’I am fine. I just need some space, can’t I?" Diana pulled her hand out of his grasp.

’’There is nothing that I want to talk about right now,’’ she stepped out of the car.

Maxim alighted the car and walked up to her, holding her hand and twirling her around.

As Diana fell into his arms, Maxim wrapped an arm around her waist, ’’And I am not letting you turn your back on me, unless you tell me what’s bothering you.’’

Diana struggled in his arms, only for him to tighten his grip on her, ’’Let me go.’’

Maxim did not budge.

’’I said let me go! You are bothering me!"

Angry tears rolled down her cheeks.

Maxim’s grip loosened on Diana within an instant, a look of shock crossing his face, ’’Say that again?" As he took a step towards her, she took two steps back.

It was as if she hated the proximity that he craved.

For once, Maxim felt like he was sent right back into the childhood that was already left behind, into those insecurities he had long forgotten. Right into that day when he had felt like everything around him had burned into ashes.

’’Let’s end this,’’ Diana’s whisper brought him out of his reverie.

Her ruthless words were a final hammer to his heart.

There was an intense burn in the back of his eyes. The urge to grab her and shake her awake to ask her if she knew what she was talking about dominated him but he could not move as his hands were frozen by the frost in her eyes.

’’What are you talking about?" Maxim questioned softly.

’’I don’t want to do this anymore,’’ Diana met his gaze.
