’’Stay there and wait for me,’’ Just as Diana was about to close the door, he placed his foot in the gap between the wall and the door.

’’Young Miss, you need to come back right now...’’

Diana narrowed her eyes, ’’What’s between my parents and me does not entail you to cross the line with me.’’

The man was taken aback because. From what he remembered, their young miss was more docile compared to their elder miss but the way she acted these days was completely different from how he remembered her to be.

’’Back off,’’ Diana’s voice dropped when the man did not budge from his spot.

The man retreated his foot, his head still lowered all the while as Diana closed the door on his face.

After a few minutes, the door opened again. Diana combed her fingers through her hair and walked passed the bodyguard.

The man followed her quietly.

The moment they stepped inside the elevator, the door to the adjacent elevator opened and Maxim stepped out of it, holding a few paper bags in his hand.

Maxim knocked on the door to the suite for a few time but when there was no response, he assumed that Diana must be taking a shower. When he checked, he realized that she had not locked the door from inside.

He turned the doorknob and stepped inside, "Ana, I’ve got us breakfast...’’ his words trailed off when he walked towards the bed, only to find a note lying on the mattress.

Maxim placed the paper bags on the bedside table before he picked the note up.

The moment Diana walked up to her mother, she was slapped so hard that she staggered a few steps back, completely caught off guard.

"Alice!" Helian Chen shouted, mortified by the woman’s abrupt actions. He walked up to her, grabbed her shoulders and turned her around to make her face him, ’’Do you have any idea of what you are doing?"

’’Won’t you bother to ask her where she was the whole night?" Alice snapped back, ’’Did you see the tabloids that were filled with the pictures of her and that man? Stefan was badly humiliated and our connections with his family are strained. Now there are wild rumours about our younger daughter, who is also being linked up with a strange man and she spent the whole night with him outside! Do you not care enough to ask? Or are you looking forward to another grandchild that comes out of nowhere to surprise you?"

Alice point a shaky finger at Diana, ’’She...’’

’’I am leaving.’’

Diana’s words made the living room drown in pin-drop silence.

The servants had already left under Helian Chen’s fierce gaze the moment Diana was slapped and only the three of them were left in place.

’’What did you say?" Alice stepped closer to Diana and grabbed her shoulder, yanking her forward, ’’Say that again!’’

Diana glanced at the hand that grasped her shoulders in a death grip. She grabbed her mother’s wrists and pushed them back, stepping back from her. She told her calmly, ’’I was here to tell you that I am not coming back to Beijing anymore. This place, this house, and you both might stay in my heart but I refuse to allow you to stay in my life.’’

’’Ana...’’ Helian Chen could feel his heart breaking into pieces, ’’You..’’

Diana smiled at her father, even as though it hurt her heart, ’’She has done worse,’’ she touched her cheek where the sting of her mother’s slap was still as fresh, ’’And you were not even there to witness it. You were not even there to hold me after it. It is too late for that now.’’

The man’s fingers clenched into a fist as he felt like a sense of suffocation consuming him.

Diana glanced at her mother one last time. The woman stood there in disbelief, her beautiful face seemed to have frozen when the realization of the truth behind her words started sinking inside.

Despite having a lot of words to say, Diana turned around to leave without another word.

No tears, no grudges. There was just a dull ache but for the first time, she could feel the freedom of her own decision sinking inside her, making her feel like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. For the first time in a while, she felt free.

"Maxim Warner, right?"

’’That boy you used to pity back in high school?"

’’Did you look into him?" Diana turned to face the woman.

’’Did you expect me not to do that?" Alice crossed her arms in front of her chest, lips twisting up in baleful smirk as she shook her head, ’’You were the daughter that I was the most proud of. Yet, how did you repay me? You disappeared with a man out of nowhere and you expected me to sit still and do nothing?"

’’That bastard is a leech isn’t he?"

Diana’s lips parted in disbelief.

’’What? You can’t tolerate me calling him a bastard? But isn’t he one?" Alice looked at Diana condescendingly, ’’Is he even worthy of standing beside you?"

Diana smiled bitterly, ’’I don’t know about him but I feel unworthy of him now, as I listen to your words.’’

’Crash’

Alice swung her hand, hurling the flower vase down to floor, letting it shatter into dust as she panted, chest heaving with rage.

The moment she approached Diana, Helian Chen grabbed her elbow and pulled her back, ’’Stay away from her while you talk,’’ his voice dropped.

’’Isn’t it too late for you to play the idol father? All these years, I was the one who raised her and now you want to teach me how to deal with her?’’ she pulled her hand away from the man’s grip, her gaze sarcastic, ’’What right do you have?"

’’And you...’’ Alice narrowed her eyes at Diana as she approached her, ’’Drop that idea of leaving and stay here. That man doesn’t want you, he is just eyeing our family name. Why do you think he was always that close to you back in school? He was treating you as an asset so that he can climb the ladders by using you.’’
