Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 284: You knew it?
Chapter 284: You knew it?
’’You lucky thing, do you know how much of a tragedy I have landed myself in?"
Maxim arched a brow quietly, motioning for him to speak.
Alex could no longer hold back as he vented about his frustrations.
When he went back to the mansion yesterday, his father announced that his long-lost uncle was found and the cousin that he thought was dead was in fact alive and well.
Before Alex could continue speaking, Maxim cut him off, ’’That’s a good thing.’’
’’Easy for you to say,’’ Alex blocked the Maxim’s the moment he turned to leave.
’’Your family affairs are none of my business.’’
’’You... I am not saying it is any of your business. But your good luck is all of my business. Why is it that we both operated on Louis and it is only me who is suffering now?" Alex was genuinely happy for his father and grandfather when they broke this news to him but that happiness was traded with dread the moment he discovered who his Uncle was, ’’Now, that man has accused me of manhandling him and misbehaving with him and all that when it was both of us who took such measures for his own good. I was asked by my father to beg for his forgiveness.’’
Maxim picked up the glass of water from his desk, his fingers tracing the rims of the glass as he sipped from it.
’’But that man refused to forgive me. Now my father wants me to serve Louis...’’
’’Your Uncle,’’ Maxim interrupted casually.
’’You...’’ Alex held himself back from bursting in fury, ’’I am being asked by my father to take care of him till he moves to Beijing. I am a fucking doctor, not a nurse. I don’t know how to cajole or please him. I have no experience with these.’’
’’Practice makes you better.’’

At this point, Alex had no idea if he had decided to come to Maxim to vent his frustrations on him or get his grievances aggravated by him.
’’And you know what’s even worse? My cousin is none other than Logan Parker.’’
’’Oh.’’
’’You knew?" Alex’s eyes widened when he saw Maxim’s calm and composed behavior, ’’You knew all of this?"
’’Yes,’’ Maxim deadpanned.
’’Then was I the only person who discovered it late?"
’’Yes.’’
Alex heaved a forlorn sigh. Things were not that bitter with Logan from his side but they did not have any pleasant encounters either. And when he thought about Logan’s cold stature, Alex could not help but find the idea of calling him cousin rather intimidating.
He had some vague memory of the elder cousin that he used to have when he was young. But that younger boy’s image did not merge with Logan Parker.
He was lively and bright, with a personality so warm that it was almost infectious. If his father was not the person who broke this news to him then Alex would never have believed in the authenticity of it.
’’And what’s, even more, worse is that my Grandpa wants me to take care of the hospital while he rests for some days,’’ And he could not even bring himself to turn his grandfather down after the turn of events in their family. The old man surely needed a break, ’’But the hospital is going crazy.’’
That caught Maxim’s attention, ’’Why do you say so?"
’’Our assistants resigned. And now even some of the doctors are gone. Dr. Rick was fired and your ex seems to be resigning as well.’’
Maxim’s brows tugged together for a brief moment before it dawned on him, ’’Nora?"
’’How many exes do you have in this hospital other than her?" Alex eyed him suspiciously.
’’Nora is resigning?"
’’Yes, she would leave by the end of this month.’’
Suddenly, Diana’s question came ringing back into Maxim’s head.
’What kind of a person was she? Your ex-girlfriend. The one you confessed to in front of a crowd.’
Very few people were aware of that episode of his and he knew that Ryle was not the one to blabber this in front of Diana.
’’Hey, where are you going?" Alex shouted when Maxim walked towards the door.
’’Anything else?" Maxim halted in his tracks.
’’I will get some people over for an interview for the position of our assistants. When would you be available for that? Or shall I let the higher-ups pick the assistant for you?"
’’I don’t need one,’’ Once his words dropped, Maxim left the office.
Alex was about to follow after him when his gaze landed on the photo frame on the desk. The last time he saw it, the photo frame seemed empty.
But this time, the picture on it was in full display.
He squinted as he observed the young girl in the picture, ’’Hmm... This blondie... has to be Diana,’’ it seemed like they knew each other for a longer time than people were aware of.
Alex clicked his tongue and looked in the direction Maxim left, ’’Lovesick fool.’’
A distant memory of his university days flashed in his mind with the image of a sweet girl who would go on blabbering about every little thing of her day the moment she saw him.
Alex forced that memory down when he realized where his mind had gone to.
He shook his head and left Maxim’s office.
Maxim went straight to the pediatric department of the hospital. As he crossed the hallway and stopped in front of a particular office, the people standing there looked at him in surprise.
A young man stepped forward to greet him, ’’Dr. Warner, do you need something?" A few months ago, he would not have felt surprised about it because back then, his superior was dating Maxim and even after they broke, there had been interactions between them every once in a while.
But gradually, things changed. Given the current dating rumors between Maxim and his ex-assistant, it was not hard to decipher why he was not spotted with Nora anymore. So, his sudden visit was a surprise.
Maxim glanced at Nora’s assistant, ’’No.’’
He knocked on the door twice before he pushed it open and stepped inside.
’’Dr. Warner, you can’t go in like that..’’ the assistant panicked and followed inside.
