Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 285: Trample his heart
Chapter 285: Trample his heart
Nora, who was sitting with a file in her hand, tilted her head when she heard the noises.
There was a flicker of surprise in her eyes when she spotted Maxim but then her expressions changed to her disinterest.
She glanced at her assistant, ’’Leave us alone.’’
As soon as her assistant left the office, Nora’s attention was back to Maxim.
’’What brings you here?" Nora pointed her chin towards the chairs, motioning for Maxim to speak.
Maxim tucked his hands inside his pocket, not making a move to sit, ’’Did you talk to her?"
’’What?" Nora raised a brow, ’’Who?"
Maxim looked at her quietly without making a move to explain.
’’Oh, your girl?’’ Nora frowned, ’’Apologies, she is not my type.’’
Maxim’s face turned dark, ’’Stay away from her.’’
’’Did I not tell you she is not my type? I don’t even like her dressing sense, let alone her. Why would I bother?" Nora scoffed. When Maxim narrowed his eyes, she pushed herself to her feet and approached him.
She said, ’’You and I... We had a nice deal where we pretended to be a couple. You did it to keep your mother from preventing blind dates and I did it because I don’t want to marry a man. So, to sum it up, I was miffed when our convenient deal was called off. I wanted it fixed but then your little lover came into the picture and ruined it completely which annoyed me to some extent. But that’s it. I am not a bitch. I never badgered your girl, if that’s what you are asking.’’
Maxim glanced at her for some time and it did not take him much to believe that she was not lying about it. ’’Heard that you are leaving,’’ he raised a brow.
’’I hate chaos and this hospital is fucking chaotic right now,’’ Nora crossed her arms in front of her chest and scoffed, ’’Good wishes are awkward. Don’t say touchy or mushy stuff to me as some farewell thing.’’
’’Not interested,’’ Maxim rolled his eyes and left her office.
Since it was not Nora, then it did not take him another thought to figure out who it could possibly be.
He grabbed his phone and scrolled through his mails before a number appeared on his screen.
He dialed the number and the call was answered on the second ring.
’’D... Dr. Warner,’’ Veronica’s nervous voice resounded from the other side.
’’Did you talk to Diana?"
’’Huh?" Veronica was stunned for a moment before she hurriedly explained, ’’It was all good talk, I mean we are friends now so we had a conversation.
Friends. When did that happen? The last time he remembered, they were still in their wine war.
Maxim’s lips thinned, ’’Did you tell her about your sister?"
’’I... Well, I thought she was being scammed so I told her about the resemblances she shares with my sister and how you might be treating her as a replacement. I asked her to be cautious but she did not pay attention to my words. So, she treated my words like air...’’
Maxim disconnected the call as he walked towards his car. His fingers reached out to pinch the spot between his brows.
She might not have believed Veronica’s words but the way he acted yesterday certainly affected her.
He had wanted to step out and explain himself but he did not have the right words to describe the situation.
Ultimately, the truth was that he had been hiding things from her. And if he answered one question of hers, then all his pretenses would come crashing down. All his guards would drop and his heart would be bare all over again for her to trample it however she wished.
Maxim glanced at his phone and searched for her name. His last texts were still unseen.
Maxim inhaled a deep breath. He threw his phone in the backseat and got inside the driver’s seat.
By the time Maxim reached Diana’s place, he was a mess, both by heart and body.
He did not know how many hours it had been since he last saw her but all he knew was that he was craving Diana like a fucking addict.
Maxim inhaled a deep breath and rang the doorbell once.
But after a few minutes, there was no response from inside.
Maxim rang the doorbell twice. Thrice.
’’Do it one more time and I would kick your ass..." Daisy opened the door while holding a sleepy Angel in her arms, annoyance written all over her face.
’’Your sister would not appreciate that,’’ Maxim patted Angel’s head and the little girl yawned as she looked at him.
’’Papa...’’ she blinked and closed her eyes, shifting to a comfortable position in Daisy’s arms.
Maxim’s lips inadvertently curved in a smile at the way she addressed him. One tiny form of address and it brought him closer to her and her Auntie. How could he not adore it?
Daisy coddled Angel closer in her arms, her movements much smoother than they used to be. Ivy had some work today and she informed her that she would probably be away for a few days. Hence, Daisy had to take a few days off from work.
Ryle was already after ’her’. He wanted Dexter to locate ’Daisy Chen’. So, Daisy gave him the excuse that she would focus better on the task while staying at home.
Hence, she managed to get some quality time with Angel. But she was not expecting Maxim at this hour.
Daisy opened the door wider and turned around to walk inside the place.
’’Do you need something? When is Diana coming back?"
Maxim had just taken a step inside the house when he heard Daisy’s words and his footsteps came to a halt. He stood there unmoving in his spot.
When Daisy did not get a response after a few seconds, she stopped in her tracks and turned to look at Maxim, ’’Why are you not saying anything...’’ her words trailed off when she saw the disbelief on his face, ’’What... happened?"
