Chapter 283: I need a shoulder
’’My place?" he kissed her neck again, his voice coming out in a seductive whisper.
And Diana mustered all her self control to shake her head, ’’No.’’
Maxim sighed against her neck, his warm breath brushing her skin.
Diana felt her knees wobbling as she struggled to stand straight.
His place? This offer at this particular moment sounded like a temptation. Like she would be bewitched the moment she stepped in there. Or probably go down on her knees and sing a confession song for Maxim Warner without any considerations.
She needed to clear her head and see things rationally.
’’Okay,’’ Maxim straightened up. He reached his hands towards her and fixed her hair and clothes before cupping her cheeks.
Diana blinked when he leaned closer and the next moment, she felt a warmth on her skin as he kissed her forehead, ’’Sleep tight.’’
Diana blinked again, feeling the warmth of that forehead kiss shooting straight to her heart and encasing her heart in a giddy feeling, ’’Mm...’’ she bit her lips and pushed herself to her tiptoes to kiss his chin.
Maxim froze for a moment and Diana took the chance to escape from his grip.
She was about to walk away the moment she stepped out of the elevator but a thought crossed her mind and her footsteps came to a halt.
Diana turned around to look at him, a foot still in the elevator, ’’What kind of a person was she?" The conversation with Veronica reappeared in her mind.
Curiousity killed a cat and she was the cat seeking her death.
’’Who?" Maxim seemed dazed, his finger brushing his chin.
A few months ago, Diana would have laughed it off and made fun of it. But now, she felt so strangely suffocated when she thought about him sharing moments with someone that was not her.
It was strange. And she hated that feeling. It felt so wrong for her to feel like that but it seemed like she had no control over it.
’’Your ex-girlfriend. The one you confessed to in front of a huge crowd.’’
The moment those words slipped off her mouth, she saw the change in his expression. The way his pupils dilated and the way he broke off the eye contact with her almost instantly.
Diana just felt an invisible weight on her chest.
She stood there quietly, waiting for his response but he did not speak a word.
’’I am tired so I should leave I guess,’’ she stepped back, letting the elevator door close.
Maxim looked back at her and opened his mouth.
But he did not call her name nor did he walk up to her until the door closed completely.
And as if it was even possible, she felt the crushing feeling weighing her down till she could not feel any strength.
’’Stop overthinking already...’’ Diana fluffed her hair in frustration, wanting to rip them off as she dragged herself back to her apartment.
Maybe Maxim was exhausted. Maybe he needed some rest. Or maybe his ex-girlfriend had traumatized him which is why the mention of her affected hm.
She did not have to feel like the dramatic main character of a romance novel who just discovered that her boyfriend was still in love with his ex.
’’Ugh...’’ Diana rubbed her neck as she looked at her feet, her blonde hair framing her face, ’’Forget it already...’’
Her steps came to a halt when a pair of legs greeted her view.
Her eyes widened, ’’Max...’’
Her words trailed off the moment she looked up and saw a familiar face. But it was not Maxim, ’’You...’’
The next evening.
After a busy day in the hospital, Maxim was sitting in his office room.
His gaze constantly flying back to the phone in his desk which was lying idle like it hadn’t been doing in a long time.
Previously, he was used to have his phone ringing during the working hours and it used to go silent once he got off work unless there was some emergency.
But ever since Diana reappeared in his life, his phone would beep every once in a while without a break.
Unlike today when it felt so bleak. No calls from Diana. No texts from her.
Maxim grabbed his phone and clicked a picture of the photo frame on his desk. His eyes lingered on the teenage Diana for some time before he shared the picture with the adult Diana, waiting for her reaction.
As minutes trickled by, he waited for her response. But after some time, Maxim gave up when she did not even see his message.
Usually, she would respond to his text within a few minutes and sometimes even seconds. He loved that even though he never told her. And now that she was not reesponding to his texts, it made him feel strange.
’Bam’
The loud noise pulled Maxim’s brows in a frown. He raised his head to look at the entrance of his office, ’’What is it?"
’’Frustration!" Alex raked his fingers through his hair as he approached him.
Maxim closed his laptop and pushed himself to his feet but before he take a step to leave, Alex pressed him down on the chair by his shoulder and jumped on the desk to sit on it, ’’Don’t be stingy.’’
’’What do you need?" Maxim pinched the spot between his brows. It was still convenient when this lad hated him to the core and went in the opposite direction everytime he saw him.
This clingy side of Alex that had come out after they performed Louis’ surgery together was something that Maxim was unaccustomed to.
’’I need... a shoulder,’’ Alex swung his legs back and forth with his head thrown back, a cigarette dangling in the corner of his mouth which he spat on Maxim’s desk.
Maxim’s eyes narrowed.
Alex picked up the cigarette immediately with a smile.
’’For what? To cry on?" Maxim pursed his lips, ’’If yes, then apologies, they are only available for my girlfriend. She is possessive about what’s hers.’’
’’Jeez... You did not have to show off,’’ Alex glared, ’’I need your shoulder to put my burdens on.’’
