Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 267: A farewell
Chapter 267: A farewell
"Because I thought you were imitating my sister. She is a famous person. People in the entertainment circle know her name. She is famous. For someone to be so similar to her, is that too much of a coincidence? I started wondering that when I saw how close you and Dr. Warner were,’’ Veronica shook her head, ’’But then a few incidents happened. Especially the wine incident. Had it been my sister, she would not have retorted to me in public or been so bold. So, I realized that your personalities are different. If you were to imitate her then you would have imitated her personality as well.’’
Diana rolled her eyes, ’’Your mind is more creative than mine. I don’t even know your sister.’’
’’I figured that later,’’ Veronica fell quiet for a few minutes before she mustered her courage to drop the bomb, ’’But the same can’t be said about Dr. Warner. He knew her and now he knows you. It’s impossible for him to not notice the similarities between you two. Everyone in my sister’s friend circle knows how involved she was with a doctor before she eventually broke up with him due to her busy schedule.’’
Diana fell silent.
Veronica sighed, ’’Look, I am not trying to upset you or drive a wedge between you two. But things are obvious. Unlike before, I think you are not that bad. A woman like you doesn’t deserve to be someone’s replacement in a man’s life,’’ Although she tried to keep her voice down, Veronica felt like her words were still grating on her ears.
Yet, since she had decided to come clean with Diana, she did not want to hold back on such a piece of information just for fear of offending her.
From her observation, Maxim did specially treat Diana but given the way things were, what were the chances that he was taking Diana as a stand-in for his ex-girlfriend?
When Veronica thought that Diana would lose her temper on her, Diana surprised her by laughing instead.
’’You... Are you traumatized? Don’t worry. You can take a counseling session while we are at it. Dr. Warner is good but he is not the only fish in the sea,’’ Veronica panicked when Diana laughed till she was clutching her stomach. She had seen such cases where trauma made people crazy within a moment. Had she known that Diana was so attached to Maxim, she would have chosen her words carefully. Fuck! What did she do?
Diana wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes as she shook her head, ’’For you to drive a wedge between us, I need to have suspicions regarding Maxim first. But I trust him the way I trust myself. Even more. And he respects me.’’
Diana knew that she was not the picture-perfect girl.
She had this habit of overthinking things till they clouded her head.
She did not have the Hollywood hair that remained perfect anytime every time. On days when she was sad, she looked like a mess, almost like a drug addict.
She did not have the patience or calmness one should cultivate in life and relationships. When she lost her temper, she had the tendency to put up her walls and shut everyone out without listening to them or their explanations.
She was a little traumatized, a little broken. Hesitant to open up to new things yet curious to know.
Bad at telling people what was wrong with her.
She preferred crying in dark corners when hurt instead of facing people and sorting things out.
All in all, she was not perfect at all.
But what was the big deal? She was not a completed book.
She was a work in progress.
And throughout all these phases of her life, with all her flaws intact, Maxim had always embraced her with an unwavering determination as if the most disturbing traits in her did not bother him in the slightest.
She refused to believe that he would treat her that way.
Be it when he was angry, or upset, or even if they were on bad terms, he would never disrespect her by taking her as a replacement for someone else just to pleasure himself.
’’If you tell me he killed someone, I might trust you within a moment. But this... I find it funny because not just me, he would not do it to any woman.’’
"Maxim Warner, when young, was the boy I looked up to, and cared for. He was the boy that my younger self trusted her life with. He was my best friend and closest confidant. Now, he is the man I admire and love to the extent that it’s...’’
Diana trailed off the moment that four-lettered eternal curse escaped her mouth, pouring gasoline all over her burning heart.
Her words stunned herself into silence, let alone Veronica who seemed astonished by her other revelations and at the same time, looked as if she had figured something.
’’So, you know him since young? Then things might be rather different,’’ Veronica patted Diana’s shoulder with a relieved smile on her face, ’’I wish you well,’’ she said before leaving.
Diana stood there quietly, trying to calm the battles between her mind and heart.
Hence, amidst her struggles, she failed to notice the way Veronica’s words sounded like a farewell.
By the time it registered in her head, Veronica was gone.
In the Director’s office.
A wisp of lotus fragrance lingered in the air as Old Master Qin held a cup of his favorite lotus tea in his hand.
Notes of classical music flowed in the air along with the head nurse’s exaggerated blabbering regarding all the fiascos that happened in the hospital in his absence.
’’Sir, Dr. Qin handled the issue smoothly and Dr. Warner assisted him but that patient has been so troublesome during this period. In fact, today, he almost...’’
’’Shh,’’ Old Master Qin waved his vacant hand in frustration, ’’Enough enough. It’s good to know that those two brats were up to something good in my absence. Since the situation has been handled, don’t be depressed anymore. Go!"
He shooed Mary, who left the office, albeit reluctantly.
