Chapter 266: You can laugh
In the next moment, Veronica unlocked her phone and passed it to Diana.
Diana glanced at her questioningly before peering at the phone in her hand.
The picture of a beautiful blonde greeted her view.
Only the side profile of the woman was shown in the picture and it was highlighted by the shadows of the setting sun. She had mid-length wavy blonde hair and since she was gazing upwards, one could see clear eyes shining under the glow of the setting sun.
While Diana glanced at the picture in stunned silence, Veronica opened her mouth to speak, ’’When I heard that Dr. Warner has an assistant, I felt rather down. The position I had my eyes on for so long was gone just like that. I went there and saw you, and the first person I thought of was my sister. You looked similar; hair, makeup, and clothing. But I passed it off as a coincidence,’’ Yet, she disliked Diana to some point after discovering that she was a business graduate who did not qualify to get that job in the first place.
’’But after Dr. Warner stood up for you, I felt like something was wrong. And then he came to warn me and...’’
’’He did what?" Diana snapped out of her reverie and shifted her attention from Maxim’s ex-girlfriend’s picture as she looked at Veronica.
Veronica’s lips parted, as soon as she realized that she said something she should not have. But then she braced herself with a deep sigh and muttered, ’’That day when I grabbed your hand in the hospital hallway... I know it was unsolicited and it’s too late for this but I still want to apologise. I am sorry,’’ At that time, she had done it out of frustration but after she saw Diana’s intense reaction, even she felt that something was wrong.
Diana shrugged, ’’It’s not your fault,’’ her reaction was purely psychological and since Veronica had never repeated her actions, she was not going to play petty and hold old grudges.
’’After that incident, I was warned by Dr. Warner for the first time.’’
Diana’s lips twitched, ’’First time?’’ There was more?
Veronica’s face turned rather awkward at that. She did not think that she was unattractive as a woman. She had received her fair share of male attention but for the first time in her life, she was treated like a punching bag by a man she was interested in.
It was an extremely embarrassing thing to hold a conversation about. And had she not been determined about clearing the airs with Diana, she would not have brought up this discussion at all.
Ugh.
She was not ashamed for apologizing but she was ashamed for mentioning her ugly interactions with a man she had always idolized.
As stifled as she felt, she stiffened up her chin and stood straight as continued speaking with an air of nonchalance, ’’The next time was after the restaurant incident.’’
Diana’s eyes widened in disbelief, ’’Impossible...’’ she mumbled.
Veronica smiled bitterly, ’’Dr. Warner mailed me the copy of a termination letter with my name and the Director’s signature with it. It was accompanied by a few words—The next time, it will be real.’’
After that, Veronica was simply too embarrassed to face Maxim and Diana, and even the Director. It was a good thing that Alex did not share a good relationship with Maxim and the Director never did small talk with his grandson so she did not find it that much of a struggle to show her face at work because she was sure that Alex was clueless about the whole exchange.
After receiving the email from Maxim, Veronica was also suspicious. She thought that Diana must have badmouthed her in front of Maxim and hidden the fact that while Veronica splashed a glass of wine on Diana’s face, Diana retorted with a jug of it.
So, to reveal Diana’s real face, Veronica disguised herself and visited the restaurant again.
She had disguised herself because according to the manager’s words, Diana owned the restaurant. Hence, it would be hard to collect proof against Diana if she put her point straightforwardly.
With her disguise intact, Veronica told the staff that she lost her phone on that particular date and hence wanted to check the CCTV records. The staff members believed her and led her to the IT room where she saw the whole recording of that night.
And much to her shock, she realized that all that had transpired had another witness that was hidden from everyone’s view.
It was none other than Maxim. Hiding under the table.
At that point, Veronica did not have anything to say anymore.
With weak steps, she had dragged herself out of the restaurant, not before asking the staff about who owned the restaurant and that answer from them gave her another shock.
It was Maxim all along.
With the realization that not only Diana had not badmouthed her, but Maxim had heard everything that happened there. That too, hiding under a table. A man like that was hidden under a table and that did not take many of her brain cells to figure out that Maxim and Diana were on a date that night before they crashed their date.
To keep their relationship secret, Maxim was promptly shoved beneath the table by Diana, as per the recordings.
What was funnier was the fact that Veronica even wanted to make Maxim believe that Diana was pettier by showing him how she emptied a jug of wine on her head. When in truth, Maxim had witnessed it yet he had not only not bothered about it, but he had decided to vent his ire on her by sending her a termination letter for the sake of a glass of wine.
At that point, no longer did Veronica see Diana as someone petty or calculative. The titles were stolen.
By the time she finished her narration, Diana’s face was like a rock, except her lips were trembling slightly.
Veronica closed her eyes helplessly, ’’You can laugh.’’
’’Pfft...’’ Diana slapped her hand on her mouth to control her laughter a few moments later.
But she ended up laughing again.
Veronica laughed along helplessly. Back then, she had felt heartbroken but now other than a little frustration, she found this situation rather funny.
Once Diana stopped laughing, she thought back to that night when Old Master Qin called her in the middle of the night and told her that Mary informed her about this whole fiasco. When he asked her how to deal with it, she had just requested for him to gather her qualifications certificates from Beijing and have them displayed in the hospital to avoid any more ruckus.
To think that Maxim... was still unsatisfied and he...
Diana lowered her head.
’’Sneaky sheep...’’ she mumbled softly.
’’Hmm? Did you say something?’’
Diana shook her head, ’’But you said, you only disliked me at first because I became Maxim’s assistant? What happened after that?" Although she had a guess forming in the back of her mind, she still wanted to hear it.
’’Uh... After Dr. Warner threatened me personally for you, I realized the nature of your relationship was not simply that of co-workers. He did not treat you like Dr. Qin treats me or like any doctor treats his assistant. It was unusual which I noticed after observing for some time. That’s when I started hating you.’’
’’Because our relationship was different?"
Veronica shook her head.
