Diana finished most of her work beforehand so when Maxim left to check on his patients, she did not tag along with him.

Instead, she stayed back to grab herself a strong coffee. The built-up stress inside her was screaming for some release.

But just as she had taken a step towards the pantry, she spotted a familiar face in the distance.

Veronica was standing in the corner, her gaze fixated on her.

These past few days, Veronica never once crossed paths with her or any other staff members. She just did her work diligently and even when someone talked to her, she would avoid them.

A few times, Mary had doubted whether Veronica was possessed by some ghost or traumatized by Alex because according to according, a calm and peaceful Veronica like this was a bizarre sight to see.

Just when Diana thought that Veronica would turn around and leave like usual, the woman surprised her by approaching her.

Diana carefully stepped back while gazing doubtfully at the coffee in her hand, ’’I don’t mind your free coffee or wine skin treatment but not today,’’ she looked at her pristine white blouse.

Initially, she had found it weird to be stingy because she had never had to think about what makeup or jewelry, or outfit to wear before. If a few things were ruined, she did not bother to care as well.

But now, Diana had no qualms about being unabashedly stingy. She earned this fucking money! Damn anyone who ruined the outfits she bought!

Being an heiress and being an employee was a totally different thing. And she liked the feeling of living on paychecks better than inheritance.

Strangely, Veronica looked slightly embarrassed at her words, ’’Let’s talk.’’

Diana’s eyes widened, ’’Hmm?" Did she hear that right?

Veronica tilted her head to the side, her gaze adamant.

In the hospital garden.

Diana kept glancing at the group of kids playing near the pine tree while Veronica fiddled with the phone in her hand.

The last time she was here, she was talking to Louis who was hopelessly talking about his lost son. She had thought that his hopes were useless. After all, how would dead people be found? According to what he had said, his son was gone.

But now, not only his son was alive, Louis had already reunited with his family.

How fast the time goes.

Diana sighed and glanced at Veronica who was still fiddling with her phone.

’’If you have developed any feelings for me, I can tell you I am straight. You don’t need to fiddle,’’ Diana gave the woman a suspicious side-eye.

Diana nodded in satisfaction when she heard that, ’’Now I am comfortable,’’ she was not quite used to Veronica being so meek and hesitant in front of her. It gave her goosebumps.

’’This incident... it happened because of me,’’ Veronica blurted after a moment of silence. When she felt Diana’s gaze on herself, she looked at the sky and fiddled with her phone again, ’’That day, when I saw Louis talking with you in front of Dr. Warner’s office, I just...’’

’’You badmouthed me in front of me?"

’’Yes. I saw how paranoid he was so I made use of it. I thought that if I could snatch that patient away, then people would talk about you and eventually one thing will lead to two before you are fired,’’ Veronica lowered her head.

Diana nodded.

When she did not receive a response, Veronica tilted her head to look at Diana only to find her nodding, ’’Are you not surprised?"

’’The way you were acting these past few days... I had more or less guessed it.’’

’’I...’’ Veronica felt guiltier, ’’I had no idea about your educational qualifications back then. Initially, I thought that you used personal connections to get the job. But when I saw how intimate you both were, I assumed that you seduced him...’’

Diana scoffed, ’’Can’t it be the other way around?"

Veronica frowned and observed Diana’s face closely, ’’I had my reasons to believe that.’’

"So, what now? I think we are good from here since the situation did not escalate. Moreover, the whole incident had more to do with the doctor who dropped the surgery mid-way,’’ As she spoke, Diana moved to stand up.

’’We went to the same medical school. He was my senior. People think that I am a medical assistant but they don’t know that I had completed my residency years and I was supposed to be a doctor but I changed my mind and did another course to practice as an assistant for experience first.

I applied for the position of his assistant but when he refused to accept the arrangements made by the hospital, I was rearranged with Dr. Qin. Having signed the contract already, it was late for me to leave so I ended up here. I still wanted to be his assistant but when I saw that that position remained vacant, I realized that there was no hope.

But when you fall for someone, it’s baseless and hopeless. I was happy to share the same space with him, get to see him, and learn things from him,’’ When Diana looked at her with concern, Veronica smiled bitterly, ’’That changed when he started dating my sister. They were madly in love so I....’’

’’Madly in love?" Diana could not help but interrupt. Those words left a bitter taste in her mouth.

Veronica nodded, ’’It’s in the past so you don’t have to take it to heart but from what I know, Dr. Warner had confessed to my sister in a nightclub, in front of a huge crowd. He begged her to be his girlfriend."

Diana’s lips thinned slightly.

She was suddenly reminded of the day when she had asked Maxim if he had ever been in love and he responded with a crisp and resounding ’no’.

Was that ’no’ his internal scream towards his ex-beloved, whom he could not get over?

To think that, he had once dared to claim that she was his first.

Such sheep were worthy of being roasted!

’’And the reason I believed that you seduced Dr. Warner is...’’ Veronica hesitated.

Initially, Diana had no interest in that topic. But at this point, she wanted to study each point carefully, ’’Tell me.’’

Veronica remained quiet for a moment before she shook her head, ’’Forget it.’’

Diana narrowed her eyes, ’’If you tell me, I will let you pour wine on me the next time. Without retaliating.’’
