Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 236: Replacement
Chapter 236: Replacement
’’Dr. Warner...’’ Mary walked in at this moment, ’’I was able to get in touch with the Director an hour ago. But because of heavy snowfall, the flights have been delayed and the Director has some unfinished work in the hospital headquarters. The meteorological administration also issued a blizzard warning for Sunday...."
She paused for a moment and noticed Maxim’s expression before continuing, "The Director won’t make it back before three days so he asked me to let you handle the issues in the hospital for the time being in his absence...’’
’’Discuss it with Dr. Qin,’’ Maxim interrupted her.
Mary was stunned. She hesitated for a moment, ’’But the Director said you...’’
Maxim raised a brow, ’’Do it.’’
Mary hesitated some more before she eventually nodded, ’’Sure thing.’’
When she turned to leave, Maxim spoke up, ’’Where is Diana?"
Mary stopped in her tracks and turned around, ’’Diana hasn’t come to the hospital today. I thought that she took a day off and you are aware of it. Shall I call and ask her?"
’’No need.’’
After Mary left, Maxim leaned back on the glass desk as he looked at the coffee mug in his hand.
...
"Grandpa said that?" Alex looked at Mary in surprise. It was totally unlike his grandfather to trust him with responsibilities.
Even his own credit cards were taken away after his last drunken fiasco.
Alex had intended to apologize to Diana to save himself from further trouble but things kept cropping up. Looking at the current situation, it seemed like she was not going to tattletale, and that had relieved him for quite a while.
But he had yet to find a way to win back his grandpa’s trust and whisk his credit cards away from the old man’s grasp. Yet, his grandpa somehow found a sense of newfound faith in him.
Alex was pleasantly surprised.
As much as he hated responsibilities, it did not feel bad to be trusted like this even though he had done nothing to earn it.
Alex snuffed the cigarette in his hand on the edge of the desk before throwing it into the trashcan.
He stroked his chin thoughtfully. Maybe he could put some effort into taking care of the hospital affairs in his grandpa’s absence and his recent endeavors would be forgiven.
"You can leave,’’ Alex looked at Mary, ’’If I need anything, I will ask you over.’’
’’Sure,’’ Mary left his office room.
After she had walked off to a distance, she hesitated for a moment before taking out her phone.
’’Sir... Dr. Warner refused to take over the duties and asked me to let Dr. Qin handle those things... Yes... I have already talked to him. Dr. Qin is willing to manage the hospital affairs in your absence. No... No... That patient is still unconscious but that group of men is quietly waiting in front of his ward. They are not causing a ruckus unlike how they did earlier this day... Yes, I will make sure to inform you if anything happens."
After Mary hung up on the call, she had just turned to the left when she was startled by another presence behind her.
’’Dr. Qin?" Mary looked at the man who was silently standing behind her. She did not even realize when he approached her, ’’Do you need anything?"
"Send my assistant over. I haven’t seen her around.’’
Mary’s brows tugged together. She had bumped into Veronica around a few hours ago but she was too busy to talk to her at that time.
If she remembered it right, that woman was acting somewhat strange.
"I will send her to your office.’’
Alex nodded and turned to leave.
As Mary watched the office door closing, she turned around and left.
’Bam’
The moment she left, a loud sound resounded in the hallway as Alex swept off everything on his desk to the ground, shattering a few glasses to dust.
His chest heaved violently, ’’Am I just a fucking replacement for them?" He grabbed his laptop and threw it at the wall.
He took out his phone and was about to slam it to the floor when the phone was unlocked with a ’click’ by face recognition.
The picture of a beautiful woman greeted his view and his rampant emotions gradually calmed down.
’’Mother, had you been here, it would not have been this upsetting.... right?’’ A lone teardrop escaped from the corner of his eyes as he slid down the desk and sat on the floor.
...
Having not slept for a few days in a row, Daisy ended up going to nap in her room as soon as they reached a dead end in the matter regarding the patient’s background.
In fact, Daisy had wanted to keep digging into it. But Diana could see the exhaustion on her face. Even though Daisy made Ryle suffer in the end, but she had equally suffered at his hand too.
Diana had never seen her sister looking so miserable. Even when it came to Si Yena’s matter, Daisy was rather calm. Having been betrayed by her best friend who handed Angel to their family for money, Daisy still did not look so worn out as she has been looking while working for Ryle.
In the end, Diana suppressed her anxiety and forcefully sent her off to nap.
Ivy idled away for some time before she went to ’work’ in her words. Since Diana had known about Ivy helping in managing the restaurants that Maxim owned, she was not shocked.
Usually, Ivy would handle the work from home but there would be a rare day once in weeks when she would decide to pay a visit to work.
Ivy came back around noon and dozed off on the couch in the living room, having not slept the whole night properly due to her insomnia.
And that left Diana wondering if she should worry about herself or the people around her at this point.
Diana was sitting in her room, half of her attention was on Angel who was playing with clay and messing around the floor while the other half of her head was cooking conjectures.
Diana was holding the lighter in her hand as she flipped it around, gazing at it thoughtlessly. The golden lighter did not seem something rare except for the name ’Louis’ intricately carved on it. One one of its faces remained a long carving of a... lizard or a snake?
Diana glanced at the carving, a little bewildered.
