Crashing into an Old Flame
Chapter 235: It lacked her

Chapter 235: It lacked her

Alex speechlessly looked at Maxim. Couldn’t he be gentler? What if they beat him to vent their frustration?

"Cough..’’ Clearing his throat, he spoke up in a stern yet coaxing voice, ’’Let’s talk after the patient regains consciousness.’’

When their gazes shot towards him, Alex grabbed Maxim’s elbow immediately.

Maxim paused and frowned a bit before he walked away with Alex being dragged by him.

From a distance, the view looked like a koala desperately clinging to a human and the human unwillingly tolerating him.

Maxim stopped in front of Logan.

Alex immediately detached himself from Maxim to get rid of his embarrassment.

Logan looked at him, ’’How much?"

Alex raised an eyebrow. He had seen this man a few times around Maxim in the hospital. He had a vague idea that he was probably Maxim’s friend and subordinate like Ryle Harper, from what he gathered from an investigation that he conducted on Maxim years ago.

’’How much time does he have if he regains consciousness?" Logan did not beat around the bush as he repeated the question. He knew Maxim’s working style. If the patient’s condition was not that pessimistic, then his answer also would have been much clearer.

Alex was surprised by Logan’s question. So, this guy was related to the patient?

Maxim patted Logan’s shoulder, ’’If he regains consciousness, then a few years.’’

’’How many years?"

’’Two years. Three if he is lucky and anything further than that is a far-fetched dream,’’ Alex answered casually, his words were not sugarcoated in the slightest.

Maxim narrowed his eyes at that ’devil-may-care’ voice before he turned to look at Logan to see his expression but his face did not change much.

Even Alex was surprised. Seeing the man’s bloodshot eyes, he thought the person would break down by the revelation. Any normal family’s reaction was the same when their relatives did not have much time left.

But Logan nodded after a moment of silence, ’’That’s good. Should be enough for him to suffer,’’ With that, he turned around and left.

Alex was so shocked that his jaws dropped. That statement came out of nowhere and dropped on him like a bomb.

He regained his composure after a long time, ’’He must be an enemy of the patient,’’ he could not come up with any other conjecture.

Maxim did not respond to him. If Logan really was an enemy, there was no need for him to stand there for hours for the surgery to be over in that condition.

’’Also, don’t you dare to think that I forgive you just because of this incident? It was an emergency or else...’’ Alex looked at Maxim disdainfully.

’’Do I need your forgiveness?" Maxim looked at the man from above his shoulder, ’’We don’t know each other that well.’’

Alex’s jaws clenched, ’’Then why don’t you stay out of my life? Do you think I don’t see the way you try to take advantage of my grandfather? You ambitious bastard...’’

’’I am unrelated to him. If you want, you are welcome to ask him to stay away from me,’’ Maxim removed his mask and surgical cap. As he started walking away, he stopped in his tracks and turned to look at Alex.

Alex was seething as usual. It was not a rare sight anymore. It was like every time they met each other, Alex would inevitably lose his sanity in Maxim’s presence.

If it was hatred or not, he did not know but towards this strange aversion of Alex, Maxim knew where things were leading to.

’’What are you staring at me for?" Alex said frustratedly as he grabbed a cigarette and lighter from somewhere within his scrubs. The glaring ’no smoking’ sign seemed to cease to exist for him as he started smoking.

Probably it was the continuous work of 20 hours without a wink of sleep, or it might be because of his swollen face, he looked like a depressed teenager who was waiting to be consoled.

After a moment of silence, Maxim spoke up again, ’’We have nothing in common. You have nothing to fight for. Our lives will never... merge,’’ his voice was barely above a whisper, laced with a hint of exhaustion.

But still, Alex heard every word loud and clear.

He was stunned for a moment, almost dropping the cigarette in his hands. But a moment later, he glared at Maxim, ’’What do you know? You know nothing. I... You think I am unreasonable? Do you think I am wilfully being rude to you just because my grandfather favors you over me? Do you even believe that crap? You...’’ he took a deep breath.

But before he could continue speaking, Maxim turned to leave without waiting to hear another word from his mouth, ’’Get over it.’’

His careless softly-spoken words lingered in the empty walls of the hallway, prickling Alex’s heart.

Get over it? How could he get over it?

Maxim was right. He never wronged.

If not for the secrets that Alex was aware of, they might even be friends working in this place. But it was an impossible feat to achieve.

As things stood, they were forever irreconcilable.

Maxim was forever bound to be his center of hatred.

Alex dropped the cigarette on the floor and crushed it before he turned to leave.

On the other hand, Maxim was unaffected by everything that happened.

He massaged his stiff shoulders and he grabbed a cup of coffee out of habit.

His feet unconsciously took him to Diana’s desk, ’’Here’s your coffee. You must be starving. Ana, let’s have dinner at my pl....’’

Maxim trailed off when he shifted his gaze from his office room towards Diana’s desk.

The desk was empty and clean. There were no colorful sticky notes. No random scribbles on some exotic fancy papers. Her bag. Her coat. Her lipsticks. The desk was so clean. Not messy. Not chaotic.

It lacked her.

Her messy desk and her messy room usually triggered his OCD but the absence of it made him aware of her absence and the feeling stifled his chest.

He was in a daze momentarily.
