Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 220: Back again
Chapter 220: Back again
As for Maxim, he did not think too much of it. As displeased as he was with a strange man living with Diana, he did not think that she would be interested in him.
Only Maxim knew how much of direct and indirect approaches, theft of others’ love letters and gifts left at her desk, and impeccable acting skills it had taken him before he was finally able to coax Diana into dating him.
Maxim remembered the first time he met Diana. She was sweet and her smile was always so bright, totally opposite to how gloomy he used to be. But for some reason, her smile would make him feel sad at times. When she blabbered nonsense about this and that, he would have the feeling that she was hiding something. And the more outgoing she looked, the more closed off she was. He was her only friend. And he remained as ’’only her friend’’ till they separated.
He had never been verbal about what he felt for her as he thought his actions would let her know. But for some reason, she seemed to have closed off her heart to the idea of dating or the possibility of feelings.
Back then, he might have believed that she was like that just towards him but now he doubted it after they got together.
If Diana was so easy to date, then Maxim would have probably dated her for the umpteenth time by now.
So, he was not exactly worried about some other man stealing her away.
But as a doctor, he believed that unknown symptoms should be handled in the early stages.
The more he thought about it, the further he felt that he was just being rational. And doing what a normal man should do by protecting his treasure.
There was absolutely nothing wrong or crazy or mawkishly sentimental about his actions.
...
Daisy noiselessly settled in the living room with her body going slack against the arm of the couch.
After sending Maxim off with the ’sugar’ he had asked for, Diana was rather bewildered. Unlike her, he never indulged in sweet foods, or at least, she had never seen him doing that. So, she could not help but wonder what he was up to so early in the morning.
But the questions in her heart faded when she noticed Daisy’s posture.
Wordlessly, Diana poured some water for her and handed her the glass.
And Daisy downed the water as if she had been living in a desert during this time, almost in a few big gulps.
"_" How could Ryle mistreat his employee to this extent? Was he even human?
Initially, Diana had believed that with Daisy’s personality, she would not be bullied by anyone but the current situation made her have second thoughts.
’’What exactly happened?" Diana could no longer hold back when she saw Daisy rubbing her eyes, ’’It’s almost been 3 days and you look so terrible. You... have terrible dark circles...’’
Diana asked in a soft voice to not disturb the ’sleeping’ members in the house. The door to the Master Bedroom was half-ajar and Ivy was slowly dozing off with the laptop on her lap. Weird how the girl could barely sleep at night but she was falling asleep in the morning.
Yet, what Diana found weirder was how her sister was so wrecked at this moment.
Daisy did not bother to hide anything from Diana as she briefed her about what held her back in the company for so long.
’’You are telling me that he made you memorize everything that happened in the company in your absence?" Diana felt like she was hearing things. Although Daisy had told her about it previously on the phone call, she never thought it was this serious.
Daisy nodded her head once.
Diana took a deep breath, ’’It’s almost been two years since you left his company... Are you kidding me?"
Although she did not have experience in business, but she was still a business student who was privately tutored by top professors that her mother had personally handpicked for her If Diana did not pick up the most common issue in this whole fiasco, then she would have to be a fool.
Even for a small company, it would be hard to rote learn a month worth’s of data. Let alone a company like Harper Societies which was renowned in its own field.
And it was not even a month they were talking about.
It took Diana a moment to compose herself, ’’Don’t tell me you really did it?" There was no way her sister would put that much effort to cater to such an inhumane boss’s whims, right? RIGHT?
Diana refused to believe that even for a moment.
Daisy nodded once again.
Diana held onto the couch for support as she looked at her in disbelief.
But before she could ask when she became so easy to bully, the doorbell rang once.
’’I will check,’’ Diana took a deep breath to compose herself before she walked to the door.
As she opened the door, she was presented with the sight of a certain ’freshly out of painting’ creature standing there with another empty bowl in his hand.
Despite the turmoil of emotions she had after listening to Daisy’s workplace situation, a butterfly still manage to leap out of the cage in her stomach at the mere sight of Maxim.
He was back again.
Before she could say anything, he stretched his hand towards her.
She took the bowl in puzzlement.
’’Salt.’’
Diana blinked, ’’Just that?"
Maxim nodded.
She bit her bottom lips and walked off to the kitchen under Daisy’s probing gaze. Once she handed salt to him, he turned around and walked off without saying another word to her.
Diana’s lips twitched.
If he had not fed her all those delicacies before, she would have tagged him as a big meanie kind of greedy neighbor who came to ask for things and left unabashedly.
