Chapter 218: Expecting someone else?
Chapter 218: Expecting someone else?
Diana’s existence would obstruct that method and he would not be able to harm the Chens in the slightest.
If Maxim lost his wife due to Ryle’s retaliation, then both Maxim and Hazel would come at him with daggers. That was not a very ideal situation that he would prefer to put himself in.
So, he wanted to drop the hot potato back to his friend or at least act like it was a big deal so that Maxim could coax or comfort him a little but he never would have thought he would be tricked so flawlessly.
If it had been other times, Ryle would not have been easily provoked despite his temper. But he was already like a taut string due to his wild secretary then came the mysterious heiress whom he could not track when he had initially thought of her as a trifle he could not be bothered to pay attention to. In the end, he had called his friend to get some comfort with the excuse of not being able to find Daisy. He had thought Maxim would probably plead a bit, unlike his rebellious secretary who had an enormous ego, but who could have known that he would be ruthlessly humiliated by Maxim instead? And the man even doubted his capabilities.
Ryle did not have it easy and having lost his calm, he did not pay attention to how he had been hoodwinked and led by the nose by Maxim.
Maxim, on the other hand, looked at his phone as he squinted thoughtfully. The call from Ryle gave him a flashback to something that had slipped off his mind lately.
The mention of Daisy reminded him of the reason he asked Ryle to look for Daisy in the first place.
Dexter.
Is that guy still living at Diana’s place?
The past few days passed while floating on clouds and bathing in spring but the reminder of that pretty man who had popped up in Diana’s life out of nowhere made the wintery frost return.
Maxim’s face turned dark.
Suddenly, he pushed himself to his feet and grabbed a bowl from the kitchen before walking out of the door.
...
Diana found herself chasing after a little sheep in an empty lane. The tiny sheep wagged its small tail as he gave her an aggrieved stare and its small hooves tried to move faster but Diana was one step ahead as she grabbed it by its fluffy tail.
’’Caugh you...’’ she smiled evilly but suddenly the sheep transformed into a familiar face and pinned her down, "Caught you," he mumbled the same words hoarsely before capturing her lips.
’’You...!"
Diana woke up with a start as she fell from the couch and landed on the floor. She sat there, muddleheaded, a trail of drool near the corner of her mouth as she blinked.
Slowly, the realization of what just transpired dawned on her and her face turned into a deeper shade of red. She grabbed a cushion from the couch and stuffed her face into it, cursing herself inwardly.
The sound of the doorbell ringing brought her out of her embarrassment.
Diana checked the time. It was barely past 7 am. She did not even realize when she dozed off on the couch in the living room last night.
Diana peeked in the direction of the Master Bedroom. The door was closed but she could hear the faint sound of the tapping of the keyboard which told her that Ivy dropped the pretense after she fell asleep.
The doorbell rang again very briefly, making Diana frown.
Daisy had said that it would take her almost 12 hours which was not up yet. So, the only person who would come knocking at her door at this hour was...
Maxim.
A strange flutter rose in her stomach and Diana dashed inside the Master bedroom. Ignoring the stupefied Ivy, she whisked inside the walk-in closet and quickly combed her messy hair before fluffing it with her hands. She then did some light makeup and adjusted her clothes before walking out, ’’How do I look?" she twirled in front of Ivy, "Do I have that just-woke-up-but-still-look-stunning kind of look?"
"_" Ivy, who was waiting to be reprimanded, found herself speechless.
’’Dee, are you going somewhere? A date?" Ivy rubbed her eyes as she yawned.
Diana cleared her throat, ’’Whatever. Don’t try to get funny with me. I have yet to talk to you about what you have been up to. You look as pale as a vampire.’’
"_"
Ivy was speechless. She wanted to cry but she lacked tears. Why did it seem like she was being bullied for nothing? Why was it hard to live life amidst couples?
After fixing her hair for another time, Diana rushed towards the door and quickly opened, ’’Morning. Why are you h—’’
The words lodged back into her throat when she saw the person standing at the door was not Maxim.
"You were expecting someone else?" Daisy raised an eyebrow, her tired face had a hint of confusion before realization dawned on her.
"_"
"What are you saying? I could not sleep last because I was waiting for you,’’ An unnatural look flashed on Diana’s face as she rubbed her nose and quickly clunge to Daisy’s arm, her gaze scanning her sister from head to toe as she frowned, ’’You... Why do you look like this?"
Before Daisy could speak, Diana raised her other hand to her forehead to check her temperature.
Right at that moment, the elevator doors opened.
A fiber bowl rolled out.
Diana tilted her head to the side and she froze when she saw Maxim’s dark face. Why did it feel like... something was wrong?
Maxim picked up the bowl from the floor and walked towards her, his face darkening gradually as he looked at Diana’s paws that were all over that ’pretty guy’.
’’M-Morning, why are you here?" Diana cleared her throat and stepped towards him, to ease the strange atmosphere.
The look on his face made her feel like she wronged him in some way.
