Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 216: The audacity
Chapter 216: The audacity
After Daisy left, the people who were left alone with Ryle in his office found it hard to breath. Why were they left here like lambs waiting to be slaughtered? What was their crime?
’Crack’
The thick glass desk cracked completely under the fire and everything atop it crashed to the ground as it shattered, the fire started spreading towards the dark carpet flooring.
The fire alarms have been going off for who knows how many minutes yet nobody had paid the least bit attention to it yet.
Ryle looked at the men who were standing there quietly, ’’You feel cold?"
The men nodded, but then shook their head, unsure of how to respond. Their bodies were hot but their hearts were cold.
"Then, are you mistaking this for a bonfire?" Ryle smiled. Only that the smile did not reach his eyes.
To them, that smile on that handsome face looked maniac, making them feel all out of sorts as they quickly rushed to get over the fire extinguisher.
’’You stop,’’ Ryle stopped one of them as he spoke, ’’Get the supervisors over.’’
At this hour? The man wanted to ask but from the look on Ryle’s face, he knew there were no room for questions.
It took a little time for the staff who were on the night shift to notice the fire alarm on that floor and they rushed towards the CEO’s office but Ryle dismissed them, a storm brewing in his eyes.
By the time supervisors arrived, haphazardly dressed, Ryle’s office was covered in ashes. There were sparks of fire here and there which were being carefully extingushed. The parrot sitting on Ryle’s shoulder was scared shitless, it’s green feathers had a tinge of black and it could only scoot closer to Ryle after barely surviving the tragedy.
It had never chanced upon such a beastly human before who burnt the place they were standing at.
How scary. It’s mighty self was startled by the fire.
’’B-B-Boss, this...’’
’’How much time will it take to recover these?"
The supervisors looked at each other, muddleheaded. They were not knowledgeable in renovations, ’’Um... Boss, do you want us to look for a team to remodel your office? It should not take long...’’
Ryle narrowed his eyes and the man trailed off.
The supervisor of the finance department was slyer than the others so when he noticed Ryle’s expression, he scanned the place keenly knowing that there was more to Ryle’s words. When his gaze landed on a half-burnt cover of a familiar file, he panicked.
This... A few days ago, Ryle had sent some men to every department to gather the data for the past two years. Later, they came to know that those were handed to Ryle’s secretary and all of them had sneered that that arrogant man was being taught a lesson by their Boss. Before his disappearance, Dexter was highly favoired by their boss and they had no choice but to bootlick that guy to remain in their boss’ good books. But that arrogant brat remained cold and never reciprocated their sentiments.
They hated him to the core yet they could do nothing about him. Who could have expected that he would suddenly shoot himself in the foot by disappearing without any prior notice? Yet, before they could celebrate, they realized that their boss was looking for him. They were irked beyond limits but they were helpless.
And now that their boss loathed that brat so much, they could not be happier so they willingly stuffed all necessary and uncessary documents so that the ’Dexter’ could be taught a proper lesson and his arrogance could suffer a blow.
The supervisor of the finance department felt a suffocation in his chest as he looked at the familiar looking file cover which was half burnt. Out of all other oldies, he had handed the most files to make that guy suffer even more. But now that he looked at Ryle’s office, an ominous premonition rose in his heart, ’’Boss... these... are these the files that we had....’’ he was tongue tied as he pointed at the burnt mess and then himself.
’’Yes, how long will it take to recover them all?"
The rest of the people looked at each other and it suddenly dawned on them. Their faces turned paler than the sheets.
Not in their wildest dreams did they think that that Dexter brat would dare to do something like this. The audacity!!!
’’Boss... we can recover the data upto 6 months. But the ones older than that, I am afraid the copies have been wiped out as we already had the records,’’ It has always been that way. Their company was a security company in cover but it had a dark side to it. To steer clear of authorities and other powers, they had kept their presence minimal. Nobody could invade their headquarters so their records were safe but keeping the older data in computer, regardless of the tight security, was somewhat risky so they wiped it clean when the data was older than 6 months.
Who could have thought that the original records would be reduced to ashes like this?
Ryle’s face darkened, ’’Assemble a team from the IT department and work on it.’’
The men who had initially wanted to watch the drama as Dexter was taught a lesson felt like they had suffered from unwanted grievances instead.
The old men almost vomited a mouthful of blood when they saw the ashes flying in the office room. With their workload, wouldn’t they just die while working on recovering these too? Would their old lives survive through these ordeals?
Despite the grievances in their hearts, they did not dare to say a word. They left like a herd of weak sheeps, their steps unstable.
Ryle stood near the windowsill, looking down at the streets packed with vehicles that appeared like ants from the height. Gentle sunrays streaked through the parted clouds at the crack of dawn.
