Crashing into an Old Flame
Chapter 215: Fire

Chapter 215: Fire

’Bam’

Ryle, who was dozing off on the swivel chair, was stirred awake by the loud sound along with the startled parrot who flew away from the desk.

As Ryle opened his eyes, he was greeted with the cold face of a certain someone. Recalling their previous encounter where he was asked to scram, his face ashened.

He glanced at the lone pile of files on his desk, ’’Oh?" His lips curled in derision, ’’You only went through this much?"

Daisy did not respond to him.

Ryle’s eyes twinkled as he placed his elbows on the desk, his palms supporting his face as he looked at her, ’’Get down on your knees and beg. I might forgive you for not being to complete the task. How can I have a lousy secretary like you...?" The words of reprimand lodged back in his throat when a few men pushed open the door and entered the office, carrying stacks upon stacks of files in their hands.

Ryle’s face turned blank. The corner of his lips twitched as the men arranged the stacks of files on his desk, blocking his view of the arrogant face on the other side.

The scene looked familiar to him. It had been just this way when he had handed this task to Dexter but at that time, the files had obstructed Dexter’s view because Ryle wanted him to realize what a mess he had gotten himself in by angering him.

Yet, this time, it was his face that seemed to have been slapped hard.

He pushed himself to his feet and looked at Dexter. For a man, this guy was somewhat short and thin and the files almost covered up to his shoulder. Ryle narrowed his eyes.

Suppressing the disbelief in his heart, Ryle walked to the other side.

The men who had helped in carrying the files were not dismissed so they stood at the side with their heads lowered as they did not dare to breath loudly. They could pick the strange atmosphere in the office room.

"Are you saying that you have them all memorized?" Ryle thrust a hand inside his pocket.

’’Yes.’’

"_"

Ryle’s eyes narrowed. This person was his favorite secretary till date for a reason. Despite being young, he was talented and his skills were unrivalled in many aspects yet Ryle did not believe that years worth of data regarding the company were memorized within less than three days.

Doubtfully, he grabbed a random file and flipped a few pages before looking at the name mentioned on a random page, ’’Laurence Hill.’’

’’Hired 7 months ago in Sector 35 of Harper Societies. Under the disguise of an ordinary bodyguard but works in collecting intel about affluent families in Los Vegas for you. Aged 37. Previously an ex-police detective at...’’

’’Stop,’’ Ryle grabbed another file, ’’The Lau Family...’’

’’A noveau riche family in Shanghai. 1 year ago, they hired three teams of bodyguards for their only daughter, who encountered two attempted murders in mysterious ways and...’’

’’Stop...’’ Ryle picked another file.

It went on and on until Ryle was convinced that every file was memorized by the little devil standing in front of him, line by line, word by word. He was utterly convinced.

His expression finally shifted as he pushed the files back onto the stacks and stared at the guy in front of him who was still looking indifferent.

The people who had helped Daisy in moving the files were so shocked that they could not utter a word. They already admired Daisy before but now, their admiration had touched the roof. They wanted to be trained under her. As they looked at each other, they could see the look of worship mirroring in each other’s eyes.

’’You really memorized it all,’’ Even Ryle’s voice had a tinge of praise.

Looking at the dark circles under the guy’s eyes, he was unable to control himself earlier and approached him to retract the task but after being told to scram, his kind intentions had vanished. Yet, this guy impressed him once again.

Forget it, not only he worked so hard, and suffered a lot but he also finished the task. Ryle felt like he should not be petty over old grudges. What happened had happened and this guy was too arrogant to admit that he was wrong to have disappeared without notice back then. It was fine if they wiped the slate clean and started anew.

He should be rewarded for having worked so hard.

With that thought, Ryle opened his mouth to speak but Daisy spoke up without giving him a chance to say anything.

’’You said, as your secretary, I must memorize all these?"

Ryle nodded, slightly confused.

’’Why?"

’’What?" his eyes narrowed.

’’You have these files. You can take a look when you want to go through something.’’

Ryle’s lips twitched slightly. Honestly, he had wanted this guy to suffer a little so that he could humble up a bit. He never intended to torture him in the first place nor did he expect him to really see this task to the end.

Yet, he could not bring himself to admit that so he said with a straight face, ’’Why would I want to go through the hassle? As my secretary, it was your duty to stay by my side and take note of everything conspiring in the company yet you disappeared without notice. It is only right for you to know these things so that I can be more efficient if anything crops up in the future,’’ his words were as fanciful as they could be.

He guiltily averted his gaze, looking at the parrot that had at some point come to settle on his shoulder.

Daisy nodded, ’’Is it?" Her voice was soft and calm.

The men who were pretending to be the part of the background felt themselves breaking out in goosebumps. Why did they feel like something was amiss?

Ryle’s lips thinned.

A bad premonition in his heart, ’’Yes.’’

’’Good,’’ Daisy raised her hand, flicked open a lighter and dropped it on the stack of files.

Fire erupted from the huge glass desk, enveloping all the contents on the desk in flames. As the fire increased, a faint scent of gasoline that had gone unnoticed initially lingered in the air.

The entire place was shrouded in silence expect for the parrot’s unsettled screeches and slutty moans.

’’Ahh... Ahh.. Master~ Ahhhhh...’’

The men who had pretended to be part of the backdrop felt themselves going week in the knees. Looking at the rage emerging in Ryle’s eyes, they broke out in cold sweat despite the huge fire on the desk warming up their bodies.

"_" For the sake of god, they did not know whether to look at their idol with reverence or fear.

Ryle took a step closer to Daisy, holding the parrot in his hand as he stroked it’s back to comfort it. But his eyes were nowhere as gentle as the movement of his hands, ’’Dexter,’’ his voice was low as he called out the name but one could hear the suppressed rage within.

Daisy looked at him like she was looking at a dead man, ’’With me around, you don’t have to worry about these trash,’’ she nonchalantly pointed her chin towards the burning mess on the the desks and ’cracks’ were heard from the thick glass, ’’Like you wanted, I have them memorized.’’

Her face was expressionless and her gaze was cold as usual and she seemed to be talking about random things but her tone had the edge of mocking.

’’These useless papers can’t compare to me, your secretary.’’

"You need information about your company, ask me.’’

Those words sounded so polite and helpful but the fearful men standing behind deciphered the meaning loud and clear.

They could easily translate those lines to their true meaning—

’You wanted me to memorize them? I did. But now, I will destroy these.’

’These files are important? Good, now everytime you need an information, come and beg me for it. If I am in the mood, I will tell you.’

’The three days of torture I went through should be made it worth their while.’

Ryle’s expression was unreadable at that point. His fingers clenched into a fist so hard that his knuckles turned pale. The gun in his pants had never felt so enticing.

"I will be taking a day off. Having worked without a break, I am afraid I will collapse. And if I forget a thing or two, it might be detrimental to the company,’’ Daisy nodded at him as she turned around and left with a calm look on her face.

The door opened and closed with Daisy’s departure.

She had no interest in messing with this sadistic bastard when she came to work. All she wanted was to get done with work and go back to... home. Even when he provoked her, she did not pay attention to him. Yet he made her break the promise that she had made to Angel that she would keep her company after work. And Diana had been endlessly flustered and worried for days now.

Even if Daisy did not hold a grudge for her grievances, that did not mean she would let him go scot free when he touched her bottom line. He should be aware of things that he should do and things he should not dare to do.

If he kept pushing her limits, then the next burning thing could be his well-established company.

Daisy lowered her head, hiding the glint in them.
