Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 198: Dear Diary...
Chapter 198: Dear Diary...
Diana naturally had no clue about Daisy’s thoughts or she would have bickered with her for chastising Maxim.
Diana calmly spoke, ’’Moreover, look at our parents. Although they seem to be cool with each other’s existence, Mom hates Dad’s absence in her life, and dad is equally bothered by her antics. They constantly get on each other’s nerves yet they can do nothing about it except for tolerating each other because they are husband and wife and they need to uphold the reputation for that,’’ she paused, face scrunching slightly as she continued, ’’Am I a brainless bird? Why would I even want Maxim and me to end up like that?"
Daisy’s brows tugged together. There was something wrong with this theory but she could not put a finger on what exactly was wrong.
’’No matter what, if he wrongs you in the slightest, you need to tell me. As I said, I will fix him up for you,’’ Daisy said after a moment.
Feeling rather touched, Diana quickly hugged Daisy and fled to her room lest her sister’s mood fluctuated again. Good thing that she was good with words or else she would not have been able to escape from Daisy’s clutches today.
As Daisy glanced at her retreating back, she contemplated what was wrong with Diana’s words.
It sounded okay but why did she feel something amiss?
’Mom and Dad constantly get on each other’s nerves’
’Yet they can only tolerate each other because they are husband and wife’
’Am I a brainless bird? Why would I want Maxim and me to end up like that?’
Daisy frowned. Like that?
Like what?
Suddenly, her attention went on to the ’husband and wife’ part and her eyes widened slightly.
"_"
’’Right... they are husband and wife. Why would you compare them to you and Maxim?" Daisy fell speechless.
Unfortunately, there was no one to answer her question.
Suddenly, Daisy felt a hint of sympathy toward Maxim. She was afraid that he would be a scoundrel but her sister was the one who was acting more and more shamelessly.
All this while, Daisy had been telling Diana that she needed to give Maxim some space so that he could figure himself out and Diana had appeared quite docile and obedient while listening to her words.
But only now did Daisy realize that her words might have fallen on deaf ears. No matter how much she was frustrated by Maxim for clinging to her sister, Daisy felt that his attitude was pretty clear.
He looked at Diana like the world would fall if he averted his gaze. When it came to being dense, Diana was the one going off the charts.
Although Daisy was a little annoyed, she felt like they deserved each other. They were like two similar piglets with even more similar ideals.
Shaking her head, Daisy went to spend some time with Angel.
...
Once Diana entered the room, she stretched her bed lazily and plopped on the bed like jelly.
Just as she closed her eyes, her phone beeped twice. Diana opened her eyes and grabbed her phone from the bedside table before unlocking it.
Warner: Have you gone to bed?
Diana blinked but she did not reply immediately. She renamed his contact first before replying to him.
Diana: Yes, I am sleeping already
Maxim: Really?
Diana: Of course~
Maxim began to type something but then the three dots disappeared, making her roll her eyes. Picturing the helpless look on his face, she could not help but snicker.
In the end, Diana called him without hesitation. The call was answered within the first ring, ’’Was my ghost chatting with you if I was sleeping?" Diana could not help but laugh, ’’Tell me if you need something. Is Mary not around?"
’’It’s not about work,’’ came his indifferent reply.
Diana raised a brow, ’’What is it then?"
There was a silence on the other side before the man eventually spoke up, in a gentler voice this time, ’’Are you... fine?" his voice had a tinge of guilt.
Diana choked on her saliva, ’’Cough... Cough...’’ her face turned red and it took her a moment to understand what kind of ’fine’ he was referring to, ’’It’s okay..’’ she scratched her neck. She was sore from head to toe but it should be better gradually. She did not want to make him feel bad.
"I will compensate you with your favorite pastries...’’ Maxim actually sounded guiltier as he spoke that, ’’...whenever you want.’’
Diana bit her bottom lips, something strange fluttering in her chest as she spoke in a softer voice, ’’It’s not your fault but I won’t refuse such an enticing compensation.’’
Her wild tongue was about to add ’You can even compensate me with yourself’ but Diana held back.
After hanging up, Diana no longer felt sleepy or tired. Every pore in her body was wide awake as she lay in the bed, staring at the ceiling as she tried to suppress the weird feeling fluttering in her chest.
After tossing and turning for an hour, she was unable to tolerate it any longer. She needed to vent lest she exploded.
In the end, she pushed herself out of the bed and sneakily locked the door of the Master bedroom.
Entering the walk-in closet, she removed a bunch of dresses and glanced at the huge locker that greeted her view.
Diana frowned and tried hard to recall the pin code. Was it her birthday? Or the day she moved here? Or something else?
After a few guesses and a few failed attempts, she finally unlocked it with her birthdate.
Inside the locker was another small locker. After unlocking two layers of lockers, a diary greeted her vision.
If the diary was a living thing, she would have felt ashamed because she only looked for it when she had something on her mind.
Clearing her throat, Diana grabbed and unlocked the diary as she sat down on the floor with a pen in her hand.
Flipping through the pages, she looked at her last entry from months ago. It was a long one that she had written when she kissed Maxim for the first time and later lied that she took him for someone else.
Diana flipped the page and glanced at the empty page for a moment before she started writing.
’Dear Diary,
If I have to be honest, I am not really afraid of catching a cold. But I have been afraid of catching feelings for my best friend after sleeping with him... or maybe before. When he was telling me about the things he went through during those years, he glossed over it, making it sound like it was no big deal but I felt my heart aching for him.
I wish it was me who went through all those things in his place. I wanted to hold him so tight and assure him that in the future, I will always be there for him. I wanted to promise that even if he wanted to leave, I would never let him go. But those would have sounded like empty words so I didn’t say them. I decided to let him see for himself.
The more he opens up to me, the harder it is for me to ignore this nagging feeling inside my chest that tells me that I will get sucked like a star into this black hole called Maxim Warner.
And you know what’s funny? I won’t resist it in the least bit if that does happen. For a person like me, living in denial is the most convenient thing to do but how long can I do that when I know that I can’t resist him at all? If I am falling, then I will eventually let myself fall. I just hope he... stays to catch me.’
As Diana closed the diary, a hint of relief bloomed in her heart.
Probably, if her diary was a human, it would have replaced Daisy and Maxim to become her closest confidant because it knew all her secrets. Even the secrets that she kept from herself.
...
After being pestered by Ivy for almost half an hour regarding her hacking skills, Daisy did not linger there any longer. She hugged Angel for some time and left for work after promising the little girl that she would be back before her sleeping time.
Outside the Headquarters of the Harper Society.
Daisy leaned back on the motorcycle that was sent to her by the company. Holding the helmet in her hand, she glanced at the towering building that almost seemed intimidating.
Daisy played by the rules of not working at the same place twice but this time, she even signed the contract with Ryle out of desperation of finding Diana and Angel. She even thought she could get Ryle to help her.
Now that she had found them, it was too late for her to regret.
Inhaling a deep breath, she strode inside the building without stopping in her tracks.
She could hear the gasps and murmurs. And from the corner of her eyes, she spotted a few familiar faces.
