Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 171: Getting along
Chapter 171: Getting along
Diana pressed a palm on her lips as a sob escaped from her mouth.
Daisy’s eyes snapped open and within an instant, she was pointing a gun at Diana.
Diana sobbed harder.
’’You...’’ Daisy speechlessly tucked the gun back in her jacket when she realized that it was Diana. She walked to the other side of the bed, ’’What’s wrong?"
Diana hiccupped. She pushed herself to her feet and threw her arms around Daisy’s neck as she hugged her tightly, ’’I w...was... so... s...scared...’’ she rubbed her eyes with the back of her palm but the tears did not stop.
Daisy rubbed her back patiently.
’’I was so w...worried about you. But I did n..not..did not dare to think about it for fear that I would end up overthinking. With every passing day, I was worried our parents would find us here before you did and they would take her away. I would not be able to stop it. I have been trying so hard to get a job, to do all this so they could not snatch her away. I was so scared that I never took her out to play for fear of coming across the people looking for us. I...’’
Daisy frowned when Diana started hyperventilating. She dragged her to the couch and helped her sit. Picking the glass of water from the coffee table, she brought it closer to her mouth.
After Diana took a few gulps, Daisy placed the glass aside and sat beside Diana, wiping her mouth.
When she saw how calm Diana looked earlier, Daisy felt like she was worried for nothing and probably it was for the best that she had matured.
But now that she was looking at the situation, Daisy realized that Diana was only pretending. Deep inside her turtle shell, she was still as soft and vulnerable as the little girl who curled up in the corner every time she was hit.
’’It’s fine. I am here now,’’ Daisy rubbed her back, ’’With me around, no one can make you do anything against your will," she continued comforting her.
The next morning.
As the sunrays cascaded through the window, Diana rolled into the bed.
Her eyes fluttered open and much to her dismay the world looked too small from her vision.
Crying was never a good idea.
Diana sighed as she sat up on the bed. Her gaze landed on the empty side of the bed.
Diana picked her phone up and contemplated something before she texted Mary.
Diana: Mary, I want to take two days off. I have already asked Director about it. Can you please cover for me?
Mary’s reply came within a few minutes.
Mary: Sure, I can do that but you have to explain.
Diana blinked. Explain? How was she going to explain this to Mary?
Now that Daisy was here, she was reluctant to part from her. Finally having her sister in front of her felt like a dream. Moreover, she needed to act as a mediator between the mother and daughter lest they found it hard to get along.
Another text came from Mary at this moment.
Mary: I could not sleep last night and I have dark circles today.
Diana frowned for a moment before calling Mary, ’’Are you fine?"
’’Fine? After seeing Dr. Warner under the table, how could I be fine?"
Diana’s eyes widened, ’’You... saw him?" she thought she hid him well. No wonder Mary acted strange and ran away like she was being chased by a ghost.
"I kept having nightmares of his cold face throughout the night. In one of my nightmares, he was holding a dagger next to my chest to silence me because I witnessed something I should not have.’’
Diana stifled her laughter.
’’You... Don’t laugh at my poor state.’’
’’I am not,’’ Diana could not stop grinning. She patted her cheeks, ’’So, that’s what you wanted me to explain?"
’’What else?"
’’Uh... We...’’ Diana thought about it for a moment before she spoke up, ’’...were just there to eat. But when I saw everyone, I pushed him under the table to avoid unnecessary rumors.’’
Except for the ’just there to eat’ part, the rest was more or less the truth.
’’No wonder,’’ Mary’s tone was understanding, ’’Then, enjoy your days off. I am about to go to work.’’
After she hung up the call, Diana walked out of the Master bedroom and her brows nearly touched her hairline from the view that greeted her vision.
Ivy was sitting on the couch with a laptop on her lap but the laptop was purely for a show because she was busy chatting with Daisy.
And Daisy, who would not speak two words if one can do the job, was replying to Ivy amicably.
Daisy was sitting on the floor holding Angel’s hand as Angel tried to stand up. The little girl’s eyes were wide and full of curiosity as she looked at Daisy who was still disguised as a man.
It seemed like everyone was getting along rather naturally and she was worried for nothing.
’’Did I miss something?" Diana walked towards them with a small smile on her face.
’’Dee, I was telling Dex about everything that has transpired since you started living with us,’’ Ivy chirped like an excited bird.
"_" Dex? When did they get so familiar with each other? What was she doing at that time?
Diana glanced at Daisy who nodded, seemingly agreeing with Ivy’s words.
’’Ivy told me that you mistook her for a thief when you first met,’’ Daisy remarked as Angel freed her little hands from her grip and crawled towards her.
’’She was cleaning the washroom, wrapped up in all black. She did resemble a thief,’’ Diana laughed as Ivy pouted.
’’Ma... ma... Mama...’’ Angel placed her hand on Diana’s knees as she slowly stood up, looking at her with round eyes.
Diana picked her up in her arms and kissed her cheek, ’’My baby is glowing in the new company, isn’t she?"
Angel hugged her neck with her tiny hands and licked her cheeks.
Diana chuckled.
’’You taught her to call you that?" Daisy raised an eyebrow.
Diana choked on her saliva, ’’O-Of course not. She started doing it by herself. She must have felt a soul connection with me,’’ she rubbed her nose.
Ivy’s face scrunched up, ’’Dee, you lie without batting an eyelid. If you were not that pretty, people would have beaten you up.’’
Diana was speechless.
’’Lie?" Daisy glanced at Ivy.
’’Dee taught Angel to call her Mama so that she can get on her sister’s nerves.’’
’’Is it?" Daisy turned to look at Diana who started backing out.
As Daisy cracked her knuckles, Diana lightly shoved Angel to Ivy as she gulped, ’’You traitor,’’ she shouted as she ran to hide behind the couch.
Ivy was bewildered, ’’It’s not like I exposed your schemes to your sister. I am just telling Dex.’’
Diana wanted to cry a bucketful of tears. Why did it feel like Daisy’s double identity was only going to bring trouble for her?
Daisy reached to another side of the couch but Diana slid towards the left, ’’Come here, Diana.’’
’’You promise to not beat me into a pulp?" Diana started retreating towards the door when Daisy approached her.
’’Of course not. How can I promise that?"
’’Ah, I swear to heaven and earth,’’ Diana raised three fingers near her head, ’’My intentions might be slightly dubious but they were mostly pure. I did not want to be called Auntie. It’s so boring.’’
’’Is it now?"
’Ring’
Diana opened the door to run out just at the moment the doorbell rang and in her haste, she crashed into a rigid surface.
Her forehead might as well snap into halves and the tip of her nose went numb.
Hmm, what was this hard thing in front of her door?
A pleasantly familiar minty smell lingered near her nostrils. It...
’’What are you doing here?" Daisy’s cold voice brought Diana out of her reverie.
Diana stepped back and rubbed her nose.
As she opened her eyes, she was greeted by Maxim’s expressionless face. He was not looking at her. He was looking behind her.
Diana turned around to look at Daisy who was standing behind her with a similarly aloof expression on her face.
Diana scratched her neck. Why were these people so incompatible?
In the last, Maxim and Daisy bickered most of the time usually but it was still within limits.
Now, they were hostile to each other even when Daisy was disguised as Dexter. They were acting like they had some mutual enmity between them which was impossible considering it was the first time Maxim was meeting Daisy’s alibi ’Dexter’.
