Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 172: Papa
Chapter 172: Papa
Back then, Daisy did not seem to hate Maxim as much as now. And Maxim also never looked at Daisy as if she was his sworn enemy, unlike now.
The atmosphere seemed so tense.
Even Ivy, whose blabbermouth antics could usually dissolve any sort of awkward atmosphere, was quietly observing at the moment. And Angel who was sitting on Ivy’s lap did not seem to have any intention of dispersing the tension in the air by showing her usual cuteness.
Unable to take it any longer, Diana spoke up, ’’Why are you here?"
Maxim shifted his gaze from Daisy and moved his wrist, placing it in front of Diana’s eyes.
Diana glanced at his watch before meeting his gaze in confusion.
’’To pick you up.’’
Diana blinked. It slipped off her mind that he usually picked her up and dropped her after work.
’’I...’’ she cleared her throat, feeling two pairs of burning gazes from the back, ’’I won’t be going to work today. I should have informed you beforehand but it slipped off my mind.’’
It totally did not slip off her mind. When she was about to call him, she saw the text that she had sent him which was left unreplied by him. And out of spite, she did not feel like calling him anymore.
But that was that and this is this. There was no way she would tell him that she was upset because he did not reply to her text. It sounded so childish.
’’My phone was with Ryle,’’ Maxim said as if he could read her mind.
Diana suppressed the shocked expression on her face. Was he a worm in her stomach? How could he know what she was thinking about?
She waited for him to elaborate but he did not say anything.
She clicked her tongue inwardly. Even if he was with Ryle, the text was marked seen and he knew she had texted him. If he could not reply immediately, did that mean he could not reply throughout the whole night?
’’Doesn’t matter,’’ Diana waved her hand, ’’Do you want some coffee? I will make it...’’
’’He is a doctor. You can’t hold him here for your coffee,’’ Daisy cut her off.
Diana turned to look at Daisy before she looked at Maxim.
Maxim quirked a brow, ’’I have time. Thanks for the coffee,’’ Thrusting one hand inside his pocket, he stepped inside the house like it was a daily routine for him.
’’Pa... Pa...’’ Angel, the little traitor, reached out her tiny hands towards Maxim, ’’Pa...’’
Maxim froze.
The rest of the people in the room froze.
Diana’s expression was beyond complicated as she avoided her sister’s piercing glare.
’’Papa...’’ Angel smiled at Maxim brightly and looked at him with wide anticipating eyes.
Diana clutched her chest, trying to prevent a heart attack.
Maxim regained his composure and walked towards the couch before he crouched in front of Ivy. Angel did not waste a second to glide off Ivy’s lap and land on Maxim.
He held her in one arm and pushed himself to his feet. Angel licked his cheek like she did with Diana some time ago. From a bystander’s point of view, once again, it almost looked like a daily routine.
Diana placed her hand on her cheek and rubbed it slightly. Drinking from the same glass of water passed off as an indirect kiss.
What about being kissed by the same child on the same spot? Diana could not help but wonder.
’’Come with me,’’ Daisy grabbed Diana’s hand and pulled her to the kitchen.
Diana joined her hands and lowered her head like a guilty child.
’’Explain.’’
’’Ask that little traitor to explain...’’ Diana looked at Daisy pitifully. She really had no hand in this.
’’You...’’
’’She prefers Warner over everyone else. I think she has a soft spot for beauties, like her Mama but to conclude it, I am not the one to blame,’’ she raised her hand in surrender, ’’I have no hand in it.’’
’’I’m quite happy that she addresses you that way but calling him ’Papa’ is...’’ Daisy’s lips twitched, ’’...unacceptable.’’
’’Why?" This was the first time Angel addressed Maxim like this and although she was taught the word by Ivy, it pretty much seemed like fate. Diana did not mind it at all but looking at Daisy’s distressed face, she wondered if something was wrong about it.
’’What do you mean why?"
Diana leaned back on the kitchen counter, ’’He is the only fatherly figure she had had around. She made the choice herself. You can’t glare at me.’’
Daisy massaged her forehead, ’’Papa, Mama. It makes you both sound like a pair.’’
’’What’s wrong with it?" Diana shrugged a shoulder, ’’We are a pair of best friends. Two big angels looking after a small angel...’’ she grinned.
’’You don’t feel any shame, do you?" Daisy sighed helplessly.
Diana moved her fingers, motioning like she zipped her lips.
’’You will forever be there by Angel’s side. She can call you whatever she wants and she can get attached to you however she wants,’’ Daisy spoke up after a few moments, ’’What about him? Will he be there? For one year, two years or more? For how long do you think he will linger around you or Angel?"
The playful expression on Diana’s face cracked slightly.
’’We are no longer teenagers. Maxim and you used to argue and then make up the next day in school or university,’’ Daisy turned to look at Maxim who was playing with Angel on the couch while Ivy spoke to him, ’’What about now? I asked you if you are finally dating but you shrugged it off.’’
’’Why would we date?" Diana whispered in exasperation.
’’Don’t look at me like I said something blasphemous,’’ Daisy tilted her to the side, ’’You aren’t dating, you aren’t together officially and you are just sharing the same workplace. But as far as I know you, you must have taken that job out of desperation...’’
’’I... Even if it is true, I like the job now.’’
’’You like it but will you stay forever? Is that what you aspired to do?" Daisy turned to look at her.
’’I...’’
Daisy sighed, ’’Don’t bother explaining it to me. You know the answer in your heart. If you do quit one day, I hope Maxim and you can keep staying in touch on friendly terms and he doesn’t disappear like he did in the past. Back then, you were the one who was attached and hurt. Now Angel calls him papa, who knows whether she will be the next?"
Diana fell silent.
Daisy patted her shoulder, ’’Si Yena made me realize how bad things can turn out to be if you trust someone blindly. You and I... Both of us lost many things overnight. But you should know that you need to have some clarity in your life. If you have something for Maxim, figure it out together. If you don’t, then guard your heart.’’
Diana looked at Daisy helplessly, ’’You know he is not...’’
’’I know he is not a bad person. But did that stop you from being hurt by him all those years ago?" Daisy shook her head with a soft smile on her face, ’’If you don’t have anything for him, then guard your heart properly and don’t look at him like a puppy. Because if I see you being upset over him ever again, I will break his bones...’’
’’Sister!" Diana felt goosebumps as whisper-yelled at Daisy, ’’Can you not talk about breaking his bones? He is like a sweet innocent sheep. The past is in the past. Like you said, we were young back then. If he was at fault then I made mistakes too. It’s done and dusted.’’
’’Suit yourself if that helps you sleep at night,’’ Daisy nodded as she scoffed inwardly. Maxim Warner? Sweet innocent sheep? Hah~ Only her sister would say something like that.
That man was no less than a big bad wolf.
Diana glanced at Maxim’s back quietly.
As if he could sense her gaze, he tilted his head to the side and looked at her from above his shoulder. Their eyes met for a fraction of second and Diana averted her gaze quickly.
Maxim did not stay any longer after that. He left when his phone started ringing incessantly.
Before he left, he did ask her the reason she had taken a day off and whether she was fine.
Not knowing what to say, Diana just told him that she wanted to rest.
