Crashing into an Old Flame
Chapter 169: Avalon

Chapter 169: Avalon

’’Angel,’’ Maxim nodded at him.

Ryle clicked his tongue, ’’Poor girl is living here and that heartless mother is roaming somewhere out there. Tsk."

’’Did I tell you about it so that you can gossip with me?" Maxim crossed his arms in front of his chest.

Ryle broke into a coughing fit, ’’I will investigate her whereabouts. No worries.’’

Maxim nodded. He had promised Diana that he would help her in finding her sister.

Furthermore, now, with Dexter in the picture, it would be much more convenient with Daisy around.

For whatever reason it was, Daisy hated men with a passion. She would not tolerate a man clinging to her sister, would she?

Even though his motives were slightly dubious, Maxim did not feel a tad bit guilty.

Diana had a weakness for pretty faces. It would be bad if she was duped by that man because of his face.

Cough.

His actions were more or less... justified.

...

Diana answered the call and pressed the phone closer to her ear.

"Girl, how have you been?" Old Master Qin asked in a solemn tone.

Diana double-checked the caller ID, ’’I am good. I hope you are doing well too," Although she tried her best to sound normal, she could not hide the confusion in her tone.

"You brat, you dare to lie to me! Talk calmly, hmph, I won’t listen to that brat. I refuse to talk calmly!" The old man’s calm tone disappeared in thin air as he snapped.

Diana was taken aback by his sudden outburst. She had no idea what he was talking about. She had not crossed paths with him since the day they parted in Hazel’s villa after lunch. So, she had no idea why he sounded offended.

’’Grandpa Qin, did I do something wrong?"

’’You girl, do you want your old man to curse me from his grave?"

’’My grandfather?" Diana blinked, ’’You were best friends. Why would he curse you?"

"So, you do know that we were best friends?"

’’Of course...’’ Diana trailed off when she noticed the time, ’’Did you have a nightmare about my Grandpa?’’ When she thought about it, it made sense. There was no other reason why Old Master Qin would call her in the middle of the night and mention her grandfather out of nowhere. So, she patiently consoled him, ’’You should know his personality. He used to have a dark humor so you don’t need to be scared about it.’’

’’Who is scared of that old goat? When I meet him in the underworld, I would beat him up!" Old Master Qin hollered.

Diana distanced the phone from her ear, feeling her ears on the verge of blasting.

’’Girl, be honest with me,’’ Old Master Qin spoke up after taking a few calming breaths.

Diana pressed the phone back to her ear, ’’I will do my best if you tell me what it is about.’’

’’Are you being bullied at the hospital?"

Diana stiffened.

’’Brat, now that I am asking you, you have no response to it? You did not even tell me anything about it."

Letting out a soft sigh, Diana spoke up, ’’I know you are concerned about me but these are just trifles that don’t need your involvement," How was she bullied? Those people more or less hated her guts and those who liked Maxim were envious of her.

Veronica was the only person who crossed the line today but it could not be counted as bullying if she took her own words into account. It was a mutual war.

’’I asked you to keep it a secret that you know me. Is that why you did not tell me about it?" The old man’s tone sounded solemn.

Diana hurriedly explained, ’’It really is not a big deal...’’

’’When your grandfather was alive, he would never let you get bullied by anyone. One of the times when we were playing chess, we had a brief conversation about you and your sister...’’

When her grandfather was mentioned, Diana fell silent.

She walked to the balcony and glanced up at the stars, twinkling in the dark sky. When her grandfather was alive, things really were different. Her younger self had a broad back to hide behind whenever things went wrong.

’’Your grandfather...’’ Old Master Qin’s voice suddenly sounded so weak, like a soft gust of wind as he continued speaking, ’’He asked me to look after you both if he was gone one day. He said that his elder granddaughter was too unruly for her own good so I should restrain her when needed and the younger one was too well-behaved so I should give her a push once in a while so that she could break free of her shackles. He was worried that the both of you would get in trouble without him.’’

Diana remained quiet. It did not sound like something her grandfather would say to them. He was a stern man. As much as he loved her and Daisy, he barely expressed his emotions to anyone.

But coming from Old Master Qin, she knew how much weight these words held. If he had not told her, she would never have believed that such words would come out of her grandfather’s mouth.

’’Then, what did you tell him?" she asked, slightly curious.

"I laughed it off. I told him that he was like an old immortal who would linger in your Chen Family for centuries to come. It was impossible for him to die.’’

Diana could not help but smile.

’’But I never thought it was the last conversation I would have with him.’’

Diana closed her eyes.

The memories of that incident were fading but the mention of it made her feel like it was just yesterday when it happened.

Her grandfather never liked tea but he had a preference for coffee. And she remembered how much she had pestered the maids to teach her how to make coffee. She had practiced it for a week when she learned that her grandparents were coming but what came were the reporters hounding outside the gates of the mansion and the news of their death on the accident spot.

"I was in Avalon at the time I received the news of the accident. And later, because of the mess in my own family, I eventually drifted away from his parting words. Subconsciously, I assumed that both you and your sister must be doing well. Even though your father is a cheeky rascal, he is not a bastard...’’ Old Master Qin trailed off, letting out a shaky breath, ’’Alas, at this juncture, it seems like I have wronged you both."

Diana’s brows tugged together.

’I was in Avalon...’

The words repeated in her head. Avalon.

Diana shook her head. She forced a smile on her face, ’’You haven’t wronged us at all. I was glad to see you after so many years had passed.’’
