Chapter 167: Unwanted dogfood
Diana stuck out her tongue, "Lesser than you. You have yet to tell me about a lot of things."
When Daisy motioned for her to speak, Diana leaned closer to her, "How did you find out that it was Si Yena’s doing? Why did she do that?"
"That’s..."
"Also, what about Ryle? Why are you close to him?" Diana continued asking in a conspiratorial whisper.
"We are not close," Daisy said sternly. Ryle was a clingy man and an annoyance that she would have loved to avoid if not for the circumstances where she ended up bumping into him, "I can’t speak if you are this impatient."
Diana straightened up on the couch, "I am very patient. Tell me."
Daisy narrated the whole incident briefly, "Si Yena used Angel to get easy money from your mother..."
"She is your mother too," Diana interjected.
But Daisy continued speaking as if she did not hear it, "Her bodyguard was working for Ryle. Si Family is still one of the top four families in Beijing so Ryle must have gone there to stop this matter from escalating further."
"And Si Yena’s bodyguard is dead now?" Diana was still trying to digest everything Daisy said.
Daisy nodded.
Diana fell silent when she thought about it.
"I pity Si Yena. She must have been taken back to the Si Family," To think that that woman went to extremes to elope with that man only to end up in such a situation.
Diana did not know what to feel about it, "Regardless of anything, she was so cruel to a child. Whatever she had against you, she vented it on Angel and just left her at our family’s disposal knowing how worse it could have turned out."
Daisy lowered her head, curling her trembling fingers into a fist.
Diana noticed her expression, "Anyway, had I been less courageous that day, both Angel and I would have been done for," she laughed, despite the sinking feeling in her heart when she thought about all the what-ifs.
Daisy poked her forehead, "Asking for praise, aren’t you?"
’Ring Ring Ring’
The sudden ringing of her phone interrupted the tranquil atmosphere in the room.
Daisy glanced at the watch on the wall, "It’s past midnight. Who is calling you at this hour?"
Diana shrugged, even as her heart went in a flurry. Was it Maxim?
Was he calling to apologize for his demeanor earlier? What did he say again?
As if on cue, his voice floated back to her head.
’Let me assure you, sweetheart. You can meet as many men as you want’
’But none of them will turn you on as I do’
’At the end of the day, it will be my mouth you will desire everywhere’
Hmph! Wasn’t he being too full of himself?
"Ana... Diana... Diana!"
"H-Huh?" Diana snapped out of her reverie.
Daisy scanned her face worriedly, "You have turned red."
"R-Red? I feel stuffy..." Diana coughed and picked up her phone from the coffee table.
Her eyes dimmed when she saw the caller ID. Not Maxim.
"Grandpa Qin?" Daisy leaned closer to read the name.
"It’s the Old Master of the Qin Family. Our grandpa’s best friend," Diana pushed herself to her feet. Why was Grandpa Qin calling her at this hour?
"It has been ages since I last saw him," Daisy stood up and walked towards the bed. She examined Angel’s sleeping face closely, "But I did not expect you to end up working at his hospital, specifically under Maxim. I need details for the hickeys too."
"You are so nosy," Diana dashed out of the Master bedroom, warmth blotching her face.
Locking the door behind her, she glanced at her phone.
The call was disconnected already but within two seconds, the old man was back at calling her again.
...
Maxim leaned back on Ryle’s car, looking at the dim lights on the second-highest floor of the building.
’’When did you move out of my place?" Ryle crossed his arms in front of his chest.
’’A few days after she moved out.’’
’’Where is my parrot?"
’’At my place,’’ Maxim did not avert his gaze from the building.
Ryle sighed, ’’So, does she know that you live in the penthouse on the top floor of the same building she lives in?"
’’Probably not.’’
"_" What probably? From the look on Maxim’s face, Ryle could tell that Diana had no idea about it.
At this point, Ryle did not know if he should be happy for Maxim or be concerned for him.
In the past, whenever they had dinners together, Maxim’s mother would usually bring out stories from his childhood and teenage phase. As friendly as he was with Hazel, Ryle always assumed that she was being her usual self by joking about the girl in Maxim’s past.
Knowing Maxim’s nature, there was no way he would do silly things for any girl or go as far as making any effort for her. So, Ryle always passed off Hazel’s exaggerated stories as a myth.
That was until he met Diana and saw the way his stoic friend fluttered like a bee around her.
Ryle spoke up again, ’’This place is quite suitable and safe for her considering that she has a child with her. But, don’t you think that she would be offended if she knew that you live here too?"
Maxim took out his phone, ’’I don’t think so.’’
’’You are being overconfident. I have experience with girls so I know how unreasonable they can be even though you mean well.’’
’’She has never been unreasonable.’’
"_" How gross.
Ryle felt like he was being stuffed with unwanted dog food, ’’But...’’
’’I gave her options. She chose this place. Nothing to be offended about,’’ Maxim interrupted his chatter as he looked at his phone in contemplation.
Ryle nodded but another suspicion arose in his heart, ’’Knowing you, the other options you gave her must be the locations where you own properties. Had she chosen some other place, you would have moved out of here. But coincidentally, she chose your current living place.’’
And his suspicion was confirmed when Maxim briefly stiffened.
Ryle clicked his tongue, ’’I just knew it.’’
