Crashing into an Old Flame
Chapter 156: Put me down

Chapter 156: Put me down

’Dr. Warner never had an assistant before but now Diana is there. As his friend, she must not have been able to bear seeing him work so hard so she took the matter into her hands,’ The more Mary thought about it, the more feasible it seemed.

Clueless about her thoughts, Diana was getting worried about Maxim. She sent him a few texts and even kicked him lightly but there was no response from him.

Did he faint?

No. He was still leaning back on her legs comfortably.

Mary grabbed a few tissues and dabbed them on her hair, startling Diana.

Diana looked at her body, only to realize that her dress was thoroughly drenched by the wine. Had she not been wearing a dark-colored dress, then it would have looked worse.

’’Did you do it on purpose?" Veronica said in an almost calm voice, still holding the glass of wine.

Diana glanced at her.

’’You waited for us to make a fool of ourselves before you revealed that you own this place. I never thought you were this crafty. Usually, you still look innocent but who knew you were so scheming?"

’’So, you know that you were making a fool of yourself?" Diana looked down at her plate and smiled slightly, ’’That’s a surprise. Moreover, when I looked innocent, did that stop you from slandering me in front of everyone?"

You even wasted my favorite wine. She added in her mind.

’’Slander?" Veronica raised her chin haughtily, ’’Which part of what I said was slander?"

’’All those parts which were spoken without evidence,’’ Diana glanced at her almost untouched food plate and felt grievous, ’’If I am alone on my table, I was stood up by my date. If I get along well with my superior, then I must have seduced him. My family background, my educational background, what did you not question in a matter of few minutes?’’

She raised her head and met the woman’s gaze, ’’Had I been innocent just like you assumed, I would have burst into tears or worse, quit my job after every malicious thing you spouted. But I am still sitting here so you can say I am quite crafty,’’ she shrugged and picked up her phone before texting Maxim again.

Why was he not responding anyway?

Diana was confused. But after the way she humiliated them, she doubted anyone will stay here longer.

Diana was relieved. After all, she had to protect her sheep before he suffocated to death.

Mary’s jaws remained dropped. She looked around the table and noticed that almost everyone was stunned and ashamed.

Even Veronica was sitting quietly but Mary could see the fume coming out of her ears. Undoubtedly, he was seething inside.

Usually, Diana was very docile. She never argued with anyone and remained unresponsive to everyone’s criticism but the way she responded today... Mary could feel a hint of satisfaction bubbling inside her.

’Clang’

The fork in her hand dropped to the floor. Mary bent to the side and raised the tablecloth.

But in the next second, she almost fell from her chair.

Her eyes popped out and she opened her mouth, moving her lips. But no words came out.

D-D-Dr. Warner?

She rubbed her eyes. It had to be an impostor.

Mary was about to try speaking once again when the man tilted his head.

His stony face told her that he was not an impostor or someone with similar looks.

The man raised his hand and placed a finger on his lips as he met her gaze.

The tablecloth slipped from her hand and she stiffly straightened up on her chair.

Unaware of Mary’s unspeakable circumstances, Diana patted her phone a few times. She wondered if the wine had gone inside it.

Maxim was obviously seeing her texts. Why was she not receiving his replies?

’’I think we should leave now,’’ Mary said calmly before she pushed herself to her feet.

Diana placed her phone on the table and looked at her with a smile, ’’I will see you tomorrow,’’ Since Mary gave her an opening, it was only right that she took advantage of it.

Diana looked around the table, ’’I won’t say thanks because your company was uninvited. But. have a nice day anyway.’’

Veronica slapped her clutch on the table as she stood up, ’’Don’t think you are something just because you own this place. If you are that great, why are you working as an assistant...’’

’’Um,’’ Diana raised her hand, ’’Apologies for interrupting you but pay the bill before you leave.’’

If glare could cut, Diana would have been shredded into pieces.

’’Whatever,’’ Veronica scoffed.

But the woman had the decency to pay the bill before she stormed out.

Mary looked at Diana with a meaningful gaze and followed them.

Diana was bewildered. Why did Mary look at her like she stole something from her?

Hmm, tonight was weird. Nevermind.

She leaned back on the chair and glanced at the satin tablecloth.

Maxim was still leaning back on her and her legs were growing to feel numb at this point.

But he suffered so much today so it was only right if she treated him more kindly.

’’It has been five minutes since they left. I don’t think they are coming back. Come out now,’’ she propped her chin on her palm.

The tablecloth moved and the chair next to her was pushed back as Maxim stepped out and adjusted the collar of his shirt.

Diana grabbed her phone and bag before she raised her head to look at him.

As he combed his fingers through his hair, he did not look like someone who had suffered. Instead, he seemed to be out there, roaming in a royal garden.

The corner of her lips twitched. As for her...

She touched her damp hair and felt pity bubbling in her chest. Her wine. Her baby wine.

Lamenting to herself, she pushed herself to her feet. But tingles ran down her knees and she staggered, almost crashing back into her chair.

But before she could fall, a strong arm wrapped around her shoulders, and the other wrapped around her thighs. In the next moment, she felt herself floating in the air as Maxim picked her up in his arms.

If people were not looking at their table earlier, they did it now.

’’What are you doing? Put me down...’’ Diana struggled in his arms but he did not even look at her.

She gaped at him and waved her hand in front of him as he walked out of the restaurant but he did not bother to respond.

Diana frowned, ’’What’s wrong with you? I know it was my fault. I should not have brought you to a place closer to the hospital but I never expected them to be here. I was thinking of how to send them away but it was hard,’’ she lowered her head, ’’You had to sit under the table for so long. It’s all my fault but you don’t have to ignore me like this. I know I was wrong. I am sorry.’’

After her long speech, she looked at him breathlessly, her eyes expectant. But her eyes dimmed as he continued looking forward.

Diana slumped in his arms, feeling indignant.

Maxim opened the car door before he helped her in the passenger seat.

He walked towards the other side and got inside the driver’s seat.

Diana grabbed his hand, ’’Are you... really upset with me?"

He tilted his head to look at her, ’’What do you think?"

Diana smiled awkwardly, ’’Uh, I think you are,’’ After thinking about it for a bit, she added in a convincing tone, ’’But you should talk about it instead of bottling it up. You know, adults should communicate more to avoid misunderstanding tropes.’’

Maxim raised an eyebrow.

Diana forced a more convincing smile on her face even as her cheeks started hurting.

’’Fine, let’s communicate,’’ he said.

She straightened up on her seat and let go of his hand, ’’Yes, let’s do it.’’

’’Why am I upset?" he asked.

Diana blinked. Hmm? How would she know?

Despite thinking like that, she did not say it aloud. She contemplated over it for a moment before speaking in a rational tone, ’’It was due to my improper date management skills, you had to suffer for so long. Of course, you would be upset. Anyone would be upset. That’s reasonable.’’

Although she did not know what exactly offended His Majesty but this should be the most feasible cause of his grumpiness.

Maxim looked at her for a moment before he leaned towards the backseat and retrieved her trench coat.
