Maxim draped the trench coat over her body and buckled the seatbelt.

’’What’s the meaning of this?" Diana asked hesitantly, ’’Was my guess right or wrong?"

And much to her dismay, he went back to ignoring her as he stepped on the accelerator.

Diana pouted. Did she do something wrong? She even suppressed her grievances and stood up for him when they mentioned his past lover. It was fine if he was not moved to tears, why was he irked instead?

On the way, she tried to speak a few more times but eventually, she zipped her mouth when he did not respond.

Diana curled up on the seat. Why was it so cold?

Suddenly, the temperature in the car rose.

She stole a peek as Maxim turned off the air conditioner.

Diana sighed. What a grumpy man. On one hand, he was treating her coldly without a reason, and on the other hand, he was being so considerate. Should she be annoyed or touched?

Ugh.

When Maxim stepped on the brakes, Diana looked out of the windshields and glanced at the tall buildings that welcomed her view.

’Click’

He opened the door but before he could alight the car, she held his palm.

Diana turned around to look at him, ’’Maybe I guessed it wrong earlier. You are not upset because I forced you under the table for so long. But I cannot read minds. Tell me what it is about.’’

Maxim tilted his head to the side and glanced at the small fingers that clutched his palm tightly.

Diana retracted her hand, ’’You are worse than a woman on period.’’

’’I wonder if a woman on period feels like they would be frustrated to death,’’ Maxim faced the road and leaned back on the seat, ’’That’s how I feel because of you.’’

Diana’s lips twitched.

’’You are being cornered by them in the hospital. From their attitude just now, it did not seem like this was the first time they humiliated you,’’ Maxim’s fingers curled into a fist, his knuckles turned white, ’’But you never told me about it. If I was not there with you today, I would never have known about the treatment you receive.’’

Diana frowned.

He looked at her, ’’Am I that useless in your eyes?"

’’I...’’ she trailed off, not knowing what to say, ’’It’s not that serious,’’ she had seen worse, ’’If I was affected by it, I would have told you."

’’Not serious?" Maxim reached out to her. He raised a strand of her blonde hair and a drop of wine gathered near the tip of it.

Diana sighed, ’’A pity that she wasted my favorite wine but at the end of the day, I got a free wine skin treatment. It’s not bad actually.’’

’’And that’s the point here?" he retracted his hand.

Diana cleared her throat, ’’Isn’t it?’’

’’I wanted to protect you but you have been suffering because of me.’’

’’I don’t need to be protected because of these people,’’ The only person I need protection from is me.

She left the latter part unsaid as continued speaking, ’’I have been targeted because of you. But I believe things would not have been any better even if I worked for someone else. Let alone being an assistant, if I was working at my father’s company or if I became the CEO, I would still be targeted.’’

Maxim alighted the car and walked to the other side before he opened the door for her, ’’I hate it when you are being this rational.’’

’’You want me to be irrational? That’s easy,’’ Diana curled up in the seat, shivering as she looked at him with a hesitant gaze, ’’*sob* Warner, they bullied me. Take revenge for me, will you? *sob sob sob*"

Even though he knew she was pretending, it did not stop his heart from aching. The longer he glanced at her and saw how messy her appearance was, the more he felt the rage growing in his heart.

He picked her up in a princess carry, ’’I will.’’

’’H-Hey, what do you mean by that? Don’t tell me you took that seriously? I was just trying to liven up your mood...’’

Diana stayed put in Maxim’s arms as he stepped inside a luxury clothing store.

’’You are embarrassing me,’’ Throughout the shopping mall, there was not a single person who was not ogling at them and he still insisted on carrying her as if she was a baby.

’’I am not that idle.’’

’’Then, then, just put me down if you are not that idle,’’ she looked at him.

’’I can do that.’’

’’Really?" Her eyes lit up but she was doubtful in her heart. She had been begging for it for so long and he did not listen to her. How was he agreeing to it now?

’’I can put you down but you can’t blame me if you break a bone or two.’’

Diana meekly clamped her mouth shut. Wasn’t he insinuating that he will drop her like a sack?

’’Fine, if you want to carry me, suit yourself. I won’t stop you,’’ she wrapped her arms around his neck and snuggled closer to him before she buried her face in his chest.

If she can’t save herself from such embarrassment, then both of them can be embarrassed together.

Maxim’s body went rigid for a moment before he continued walking.

’’Sir, which style you are looking for?" The shop assistant walked towards them.

Maxim glanced at the woman in his arms before he looked around, his gaze stopping near a row of exquisite dresses, ’’All of them."

’’Sure thing. Let me get them for the trial.’’

After she left, Diana pulled back to look at him.

He put her down to her feet and tucked her hair behind her ears. Looking at her reddened face, he opened his mouth, ’’Bear with it for a moment. You will feel better after you get changed into clean clothes.’’

’’I told you it was like a skin treatment. I love wine anyway,’’ Diana grumbled.

’’Why are you so red?"

’’That’s because I was suffocating myself in your arms to ease the embarrassment. Everyone was looking at us,’’ As the shop assistant returned, Diana grabbed a dress randomly and entered the changing room.

’’Are you...’’ Maxim stood rooted to his spot and glanced at the closed door, ’’...shy?" he waved his hand at the shop assistant who left them alone.

’’I. Am. Not.’’

Maxim cleared his throat and sat on the couch, his gaze accidentally landing on her bare feet through the small gap under the door. The dress she was wearing earlier slid down, pooling near her feet. She stepped out of it.

Maxim averted his gaze, the tips of his ears reddening gradually.

After a few minutes of awkward silence, she spoke up, ’’I am confused about something.’’

’’What is it?" Maxim found himself asking.

’’Do I have a common face?"

’’You are beautiful,’’ he replied unconsciously.

’’You... I did not mean it like that. What are the odds that the owner of that restaurant resembles me? The manager seemed confident that he got the right person,’’ Diana sounded conflicted as she spoke about it, ’’I have decided to look into it later.’’

’’I own it.’’

’’W-What?" she stammered.

Maxim chuckled. He could almost imagine her green eyes beautifully widening in disbelief, ’’I asked the manager to get over there to help you out of that situation.’’

’’Why would you... I mean...’’

He interrupted her troubled speech, ’’After I paid my study loans, I kind of invested in it.’’

’’Then, why did you choose that particular place?" she asked.

’’It holds good memories,’’ Maxim leaned back on the couch, ’’That place was about to be taken down by the owner and I couldn’t bear to see that happen so I bought it.’’

There was no response from her.

Maxim glanced at the closed door, waiting for her to say something but he was met with her silence.

’’My zipper is stuck. Can you help me?" she whispered after some time.

Maxim pushed himself to his feet and strode towards the changing room.

’Click’

As she opened the door, he closed his eyes and stepped inside, ’’Guide me then.’’

Diana leaned back on the mirrored wall and glanced at the man who was standing in front of her. He had his eyes closed as he stretched his hand towards her.

Diana grabbed his hand with one hand and wrapped her other hand around his neck before she pushed herself to her feet and captured his lips.

His eyes snapped open.
