Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 155: Diana, a billionaire?
Chapter 155: Diana, a billionaire?
’’To be honest,’’ Diana scanned Veronica’s face in concern before she shook her head, ’’Forget it.’’
The people around the table looked at her curiously.
Even Mary eyed her, waiting for her to finish her sentence.
’’You don’t have to be so pretentious. Say what you want to,’’ Veronica looked at her suspiciously.
’’I won’t stand on ceremony then,’’ Diana played with a loose strand of her blonde hair as she tilted her head to the side, ’’To be honest, even if you were as pretty as me, even if you had a face that screamed that you are god’s favorite creation like me, still, you need charms.’’
’’You... You...’’ Veronica nearly smashed her plate. Who was she calling ugly? She had implied on purpose earlier that Diana seduced Maxim. It was still fine if she was not offended. How could she shamelessly admit it?
In her whole life, she had never been referred to as someone who lacked charms.
Veronica had many men who pursued her but she just had to be interested in that one man who never looked her way. Not just romantically, she wanted to be beside him professionally as well.
’’I was being considerate earlier by not saying it to your face. Who told you to insist on knowing what I wanted to say?" Diana flipped her hair, pouting slightly.
The rest of the people: "_" No one insisted alright? You were obviously eager to say it.
Mary stifled her laughter.
Veronica calmed herself down, not letting her face betray a single emotion that she was feeling, ’’I am afraid that even if I was as charming as you, I won’t be able to use it to seduce someone. After all, we come from a prestigious and educated family where we aren’t taught how to climb ladders unlike how it works with uncultured and uncouth people.’’
Diana almost puked a mouthful of blood.
Uncultured? Uncouth?
If her parents were here, would they have suffered from heart issues?
She pursed her lips, ’’Very well. Even if someone taught you seduction techniques, I doubt he would be seduced by you,’’ she rolled her eyes.
’’You...’’ Veronica felt her face turning hot. How could this woman say it unabashedly?
The rest of the people awkwardly looked at each other. It was not a secret that Veronica liked Maxim but no one dared to bring it up to her face, let alone humiliate her like that.
’’You don’t have to be upset over it. Now, some people are just destined to be your UNREQUITED LOVE,’’ Diana stroked her nails, emphasizing the last two words before she continued speaking, ’’Forever and ever.’’
Veronica’s fingers curled into a fist.
’’Also, don’t be ashamed that we know about your unrequited love now. Which one of us hasn’t experienced such things? But you should be careful, don’t end up pestering a man who doesn’t want to be pestered...’’ Her words were yet to finish when she felt a cold sensation on her face as Veronica poured all the remaining wine in the bottle onto her head, ’’...by you,’’ Diana finished her words, bringing her index finger to her cheek.
After letting it linger on her face for a few moments, Diana placed her finger in her mouth. Her wine. Her dear wine. She had yet to take a proper sip.
These crazy women.
If Maxim was not her best friend and if it was not against her morals to abandon her friend, then she would have shoved him to these wolves like a piece of meat.
Why did they have to vent their frustrations on her beautiful evening?
The chaos at their table was starting to garner the attention of others.
Veronica gracefully sat back in her seat, ’’The thing is, I didn’t want to expose you but you force me to do it.’’
’’Enough,’’ Mary looked at Veronica, ’’What are you doing?"
’’Just exposing her. Nothing much,’’ Veronica eyed Mary, ’’Don’t get involved unless you want to be implicated.’’
’’You...’’
Diana grabbed Mary’s hand and shook her head.
Mary looked at her worriedly.
Diana felt some movements under the table and she quickly typed on her phone.
Diana: Stay put, Warner. If you come out right now, I won’t talk to you
She waited for some time but there was no reply from him even after he saw her text. He was not even typing.
Veronica spoke up, distracting Diana, ’’At the hospital, you hover around Dr. Warner like a ghost then you come here on a date with some man who stood you up. Women like you... are just so pathetic. All lavish meals and arrangements... forget about that, with your salary, can you even afford this wine?"
Diana’s lips twitched. She was affording the wine by selling her tiffany diamonds, ’’What you are saying is...?"
’’What I am saying is you wear these non-branded clothes. Even though they look good, they are pretty cheap. Women like you rip off by latching to rich men...’’
’’Boss,’’ Veronica’s words were cut off when a middle-aged man approached the table from behind and stood beside Diana.
B-Boss? Diana was pretty calm by Veronica’s outburst but this latest plot-twist took her aback.
The red wine on her face... It did not make her unrecognizable to the point that her identity was distorted, did it?
’’Who are you?’’ Veronica looked at the man.
’’Esteemed guests, I am the manager here. I heard that Boss is here to dine today so I especially came here to greet her.’’
The people on the table: "_"
Diana: "_"
As shameless as the thought was, Diana could not help but wonder if it was the famous ’rich man spoiling his girl’ trope that had been trending lately. Did she catch someone’s eyes and he was standing up for her in this way?
Mary cleared her throat, ’’Who is your boss?"
Amidst the chaos, Diana had grabbed a few tissues to clean her face up so that it was a bit recognizable.
But the manager still looked at her respectfully, ’’Miss Chen, is there something else that you need?"
Diana blinked at the manager.
The manager blinked back with a polite smile that made him look like a fox.
’’I am good.’’
’’That’s great. It’s rare to have you here. We are honored.’’
After he left, there was pin-drop silence on the table.
Mary looked at Diana proudly, ’’I just knew you were no ordinary person since the first time I saw you.’’
But I am a very ordinary person. Diana touched her nose, refraining from uttering those words.
Mary looked at all the staff members who had joined hands with Veronica to mock Diana, ’’So what if she is not experienced in our field? Or she has not gone to a medical school before? I have yet to see her messing up at work. She does everything properly despite her lack of experience, unlike you people who are idle all the time.’’
No one uttered a word.
Mary’s cheeks bulged cutely as she smiled at Diana, ’’We just knew that you are a business graduate but as it turns out, you are a successful businesswoman already. This is not a small-scale restaurant. From what I know, it has many of its branches in places other than California. So, you are already a billionaire. Why did you take up the job of an assistant at the hospital?"
Billionaire? Who is a billionaire?
Diana wanted to cry. First, Veronica said that she seduced Maxim but he was not seduced by her at all. Now, Mary was claiming that she was a billionaire yet she was not even a ’B’ of the billionaire.
All their allegations... She wanted them to be true so badly.
Had she been a billionaire, she would have dipped herself in a wine swimming pool wearing a diamond-studded swimsuit now that she was living separately from her parents. She would have gotten a mini version of the swimsuit for Angel too.
Sigh...
Diana looked at Mary helplessly, ’’In fact, I am not...’’ she trailed off. She wanted to tell Mary that the manager must have misunderstood her identity, but she did not want the others to linger here any longer.
There were no texts from Maxim for so long and she wondered if he was hyperventilating down there. For a big man like him to squeeze closer to her legs under the table was tough as it was. But he also had to make sure no one would sense his presence.
Rescuing him was necessary.
Mary patted Diana’s shoulder, snapping her out of her daze, ’’I know you must have your own reason.’’
Diana nodded, grateful for her understanding.
Mary’s eyes curved up as she smiled wider. Looking at Diana’s conflicted face earlier, it did not take her long to figure out the whole matter. Despite being a businesswoman, Diana was working as an assistant at their hospital. It must be related to Dr. Warner in one way or another.
