Chapter 145: Romantic calamity

’’You...’’ Diana’s eyes widened, ’’How could you phrase it like that?"

Maxim tilted his head to the side, avoiding her blatantly.

Diana tilted her head to the other side. If he will avoid her then she can avoid him back as well. Humph!

In the end, after a few moments, she turned to look at him, ’’I suggest marriage,’’ she said.

His head snapped in her direction so fast that he might have gotten whiplash, ’’You...’’

’’Do you want me to say something like that?’’ Diana rolled her eyes, ’’Or do you want me to suggest a relationship before asking you to...’’ she pointed her chin towards her body.

Maxim: "_"

’’Of course not.’’

Diana laughed when she saw how horrified he looked as if just the idea of it gave him a scare, ’’I tend to romanticize love and relationships from a distance but at the end of the day, I don’t want to be in one,’’ On a second thought, she added, ’’At least not with you. You are my best friend. It will be so creepy.’’

’’Neither do I,’’ Maxim narrowed his eyes at her, ’’Neither do I want to be in a relationship with you,’’ he repeated defensively.

’’That makes the two of us,’’ Diana raised a brow, ’’So don’t make it look like I was the only one who took a bite of forbidden fruit.’’

’’A forbidden fruit?" his brows nearly touched his hairline.

’’There is this forbidden trope in books. You know when you make a move with someone you are not supposed to do that with. Ah, forget it. You won’t get it anyway,’’ she shook her head, ’’So, are you in for the deal?"

Maxim strode towards her, closing the distance with one step.

Her breath hitched when he leaned closer to her.

’’When you sleep with someone, sweetheart, you can’t wipe the slate clean the next day. You need to take responsibility for it,’’ he whispered beside her ear.

She swallowed when his lips grazed her earlobe, ’’If that’s what you are worried about, I can assure you that I don’t want you to take responsibility for me.’’

’’And what if we can’t get over it? What am I supposed to do if it ruins our friendship?" Maxim slightly pulled back to look at her, their faces inches away from each other.

Just one tilt of his head and he would get to taste those lips again. Yet, he remained frozen in his spot.

’’You know the reason behind my courage to make this proposal?" she asked him out of nowhere.

’’Tell me about it,’’ he whispered.

Diana held her breath, avoiding his heated gaze as she whispered back, ’’It’s you.’’

’’Me?" he pulled back from her, surprised.

’’When you were coaxing Angel earlier, didn’t you say it?" she looked at him righteously, ’’You said—We end up stressing over things that are important to us. So, go with the flow.’’

His jaws dropped, ’’I can assure you that the context of my words was different. I said it in reference to the matter of Angel’s sleep. And those were not my exact words.’’

She sighed, her face drooping, ’’You are eloquent. What more can I say when you twist your words? I am bad with literature and words in general. I can only let you dupe me,’’ she let out another pitiful sigh.

Maxim had never been this speechless before.

He was eloquent? He was good with literature?

She had the audacity to say that when she was the one who almost became a writer before?

’’Are you sure you are not the one who is twisting my words?"

Diana scoffed and stepped to the side before walking past him, ’’You mentioned responsibility earlier.’’

’’So?"

’’You kissed me. Now be responsible for me,’’ she said calmly.

’’Well. Very well,’’ Maxim spoke through gritted teeth as he turned to look at her back, ’’How do you want me to take responsibility for you, Your Highness?"

’’By going all the way with me. I was holding myself back before but the moment you said we should go with the flow, I let go of myself. Now, I have decided it. I want you to take all my firsts,’’ she blew on her nails and stepped out of the study, leaving his entire existence in chaos.

’’And for now...’’ she halted in her tracks and looked at him from above her shoulder, ’’You are still wearing the clothes you wore earlier this day. Get changed and eat with me. I am starving. You suck my energy...’’

Maxim: "_"

’’So it is only right if I let you su...’’

The remaining words she uttered were too low for him to hear as if she was having that conversation with herself. But his mind could join through the hazy dots.

And the heat of those unsaid words rushed to his groin.

Maxim grabbed the hairdryer and covered the bulge in his pants with it.

It was shameful.

But he knew that it had no cure.

Diana Chen was born to be the cause of his destruction.

...

"You look refreshed, baby,’’ Diana smothered Angel’s face with kisses as she ruffled the little girl’s blonde hair.

’’You are suffocating her,’’ Maxim said as he placed two bowls of noodles on the dining table. He pulled the chair for Diana, ’’She might throw up everything she ate.’’

Diana smiled at him as she took a seat, ’’My baby takes it as an honor when I kiss her,’’ Throwing a nasty look at him, she kissed Angel’s face again.

The little girl giggled in sync.

’’See. She has a superior taste unlike certain people,’’ Diana looked at Angel proudly, feeling smug inwardly.

Who could have thought that at a time like this, Angel would come forward to support her? To think that the girl is in cahoots with Maxim most of the time but she actually backed her up today with her timely laugh. Sigh, blood sure runs thicker than water.

Certain water: "_"

Knowing that it was not the most glorious period of his life, Maxim did not push her buttons as he took a seat.

’’Did Hazel enjoy her date?" Diana asked, relishing in the flavors that burst in her mouth as she ate the noodles.

"She was doing fine yesterday,’’ Maxim pushed his phone to her.

Diana scrolled through the selfies that Hazel sent him. Hazel looked beautiful and it was not hard to see that Maxim was a spitting image of his mother, except for his masculine features. They had the same eyes, and the same dimpled smile although it was a bit rare to see a smile on Maxim’s face and they even had the same hair color.

Maxim’s movement paused when he felt her gaze on him. He tilted his head to look at her, ’’What?"

’’Uh... No...’’ Diana shook her head, wondering whether her head was in mud. She was looking at Hazel’s pictures a moment ago and she did not even realize when she started staring at Maxim.

"Her date is handsome,’’ Diana looked at the man who was cutting a steak in the background while Hazel took a selfie where she was winking.

Diana could almost picturise her wink live. She could not help but smile.

"He does not resemble a serial killer. That’s more than I could have asked for,’’ Maxim nodded.

Diana rolled her eyes at him, ’’Can you be more optimistic? You should not hold such bias against dating apps.’’

She was about to see the pictures again when he spoke up, ’’Eat up while Angel is sitting obediently. If she throws a tantrum or your noodles get soggy, I am not helping you out.’’

Diana’s jaw dropped. This man... He was so nice to her yesterday.

’’My baby is a gem. People who say that she throws tantrums should reflect on themselves. Hmph!" she scrolled back to Hazel’s pictures.

The romantic date setup looked so dreamy and although Hazel looked beautiful all the time, she looked more stunning when she was dolled up like that.

The phone buzzed and a text popped up.

’’Ah, there is a text from your mom,’’ Diana said.

’’Read it for me. If it is not something urgent, then ignore it.’’

Diana speechlessly glanced at the long paragraph Hazel sent.

’Whose face did I see before I came to my date? You unfilial son, it must have been your face. Now, you have successfully rubbed off your romantic calamity kind of fortune onto me. My dates never go the way I want them to.’

After she read it aloud for Maxim, she glanced at him blankly, ’’She must have misunderstood your dating life,’’ What romantic calamity? If Maxim had a little leisure, he could start a harem at any given moment provided the amount girls that lurked around him like vengeful spirits.

He glanced at his phone speechlessly, ’’Give it to me.’’ Give it to me before my mom rips me off in an irredeemable manner. It would be too late to regret it by then.
