Chapter 119: Cause of Maxim’s death
Chapter 119: Cause of Maxim’s death
More than half an hour had passed since Maxim left but the nagging feeling persisted in her heart.
She convinced herself that the strange ache in her heart was going to leave soon.
Friends or not, it was highly inappropriate for them to keep living together.
She made the right decision by moving out.
’’It’s fine, baby. You don’t need to be sad about it, okay? Other than my working hours, I will take you to meet that pretty uncle anytime,’’ Goodness, if only it did not feel like she was comforting herself more than she was comforting the little girl.
Ugh.
’’Ma... aaa...’’ Angel mumbled incoherent phrases and the chaotic thoughts in her head were put the rest as Diana kissed the girl’s temples.
A soft smile graced her lips when the girl giggled.
There was still some food left in the bowl when Angel dozed off. Diana cleaned her up and placed her on the bed.
Just as she was about to pull back from Angel, a tremor went down her lower back and she clutched her waist, sucking in a breath as she sat on the floor.
Cold sweat broke out on her forehead.
The familiar pain made her frown. Aunt Flo had such bad timing...
Diana leaned back on the bed, clutching her stomach.
In the end, she decided to get herself a warm cup of water before ordering the essentials.
She pushed herself to her feet. Opening the door, she dragged herself out of the Master Bedroom but her footsteps slowed down.
Diana’s jaw dropped and she stood frozen at the door as she watched the view that greeted her sight.
The originally empty kitchen island was now filled with ingredients while the man who had left the place around half an hour ago was now wearing an apron, as he busied herself with the cutleries that she believed were brand new given that she had not even gone shopping yet.
’’Done?" Maxim asked without looking at her, his dark hair was slightly damp with the sweat as it stuck to his forehead.
Diana’s gathered her dropped jaws and asked him, ’’Didn’t you leave?"
Just like she did not answer his question, he seemed to be retorting by doing the same as well as he asked, ’’Is she asleep?"
’’I am done. She is sleeping. Why are you here?" Diana limped towards him.
’’Because I want to be here.’’
She almost stumbled on her way, ’’I thought you left...’’ Diana stopped mumbling when he tilted his head to look at her.
’’You think a lot,’’ Maxim arched a brow and looked at her like he was about to say something more regarding her thoughts and assumptions but a frown graced his face as he continued looking at her.
He walked towards the dining table with two plates in his hand and Diana turned towards the table only to find it filled with a spread of dishes.
She was speechless again. It has just been barely over 30 minutes. He got the ingredients, and cutleries and even prepared so many dishes, ’’How did you even do it? I never believed in omnipotence until I met you...’’ she said while looking at his broad back but her words trailed off when he turned around and strode towards her.
He did not seem to have any intention to stop and she held her breath as he walked towards her.
Her lips parted slightly and just as she was about to step back, he stopped just one step away from her.
Diana exhaled the breath she was holding but her eyes widened when he grabbed the back of her neck and pulled her closer.
Her palms pressed against his chest and her heart did the tango, ready to leap up her throat.
Before she could question him, or snap at him, Maxim pressed his forehead against hers, ’’You look pale,’’ his words answered her unsaid questions.
’’I am not sick,’’ she whispered against his lips.
Diana was standing on her tiptoes with her forehead pressed against his and both her palms resting against his chest seemed to be the only barrier between them.
Maxim pulled back to look at her, his gaze filled with doubt.
She stepped back from him hurriedly, ’’I...’’
’’What?" he could not take her silence.
Maxim did not know what he did to deserve this. For one, she was the one invading his space when he kept drawing lines between them.
It was still fine. Drawing lines with her. When he met her again after 6 years, there was no way he believed that things would be the same between them. She had looked terrible and he let her stay with him consoling himself with the excuse that it was something anyone would do for an acquaintance.
It was all supposed to be easy. But just like the first time she crashed into his life, she did it all over again. He kept drawing lines and she kept stepping over them.
And now that she threw all his lines in some sort of sphere, she was messing with him by playing such games.
By drawing her own lines with him. And she had the audacity to think that he would let her do that.
She had the nerve to believe that he was going to leave them alone here and she had the nerve to look at him hesitantly instead of taking the initiative to tell him what was wrong with her, or what bothered her that made her look so sickly in a span of few minutes. She...
Diana sighed, interrupting his thoughts, ’’I am on my period. I was about to order the essentials and head over to the supermarket later after Angel woke up,’’ she rubbed her stomach, the intense pain was long gone, leaving behind a persistent ache that had her wondering why men did not have to go through such pains.
Maxim’s lips twitched. Well, she would sit here and wait until Angel woke up instead of calling him over. If he was frustrated, he did not show it on his face because this was not the first time anyway.
He knew his cause of death ages ago.
He knew Diana Chen just existed to frustrate him to death.
Nothing knew. Nothing out of ordinary at all.
’’Come here,’’ he extended his hand towards her.
