Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 118: Away from him
Chapter 118: Away from him
Diana quickly picked her up from Maxim’s arm, "She treats you like candy," she bit her lips as she looked at the wet patch on his skin and shirt.
Diana quickly grabbed her bag from the kitchen island and brought a handkerchief from it as she extended her hand towards him.
"She does, doesn’t she?" He asked, looking at the handkerchief in her hand with a contemplative look on his face.
"Yes—" Diana trailed off under his meaningful gaze, her mind wandering off to the day she bit him while dreaming of a pastry.
Was he... No way, was Maxim insinuating ’like niece, like Aunt’ by that accusing gaze of his?
She extended her hand towards him, shaking the handkerchief quietly.
Maxim arched his neck as he comfortably placed his hand on the kitchen island, "Do it."
Her gaze dropped to Angel’s drool on his skin and suddenly, for some bizarre reason, she found the sight hot.
Did baby drool make every man look so hot?
Was she starting to grow weird kinks?
She gulped and averted her gaze to his perfect side profile.
It’s fine. She had moved out and this phase was going to be over soon. Crushing over her best friend... Nah. Tada. Zero. Zilch. No chance in hell.
"You like staring? Or are you mistaking me for someone else again?" Maxim asked.
She snapped out of her reverie and her cheeks grew warm at the insinuation. As if she was not embarrassed about the fact that she kissed him in a daze, she had the audacity to lie to him that she mistook him for someone else, and then she had gotten herself exposed.
A sliver of anger rose inside her as she wiped his neck, making sure to dig a nail or two in his skin while dragging the handkerchief a bit harshly, ’’Not mistaking,’’ she said, feeling smug when he stiffened.
She looked at her pointy nails which had not been manicured recently but they were still in shape after the care they had always been treated with. Humph. That’s what he got for messing with her.
She thrust the handkerchief into his hand and was about to step back when he grabbed her wrist, his fingers glided down to her palm.
Maxim’s huge palm enveloped hers as he positioned it back on his neck.
Her heart leaped up to her throat.
Diana lowered her head to meet his gaze, something edgy lingered in those dark eyes.
Her palm which was trapped on his neck by his hand trembled just a bit, ’’W-What... Did I not clean you properly?’’
’’It. Was. too. Proper,’’ Maxim tilted his head up to meet her gaze, ’’So proper that I want to allow you to do it again.’’
Diana was stumped for words as she faltered between his challenging gaze and the reddening marks she did not realize her nails had left on his skin.
Heat unfurled in her body and her toes curled, ’’I... I...’’
’Wahhhh’
Angel’s cries interrupted Diana’s pathetic stutter and she pulled her hand back from Maxim’s neck so quickly as if she needed both her hands to carry the little girl or else she would slip.
God could not help her save herself from the embarrassment of her own actions hence he sent little Angel. Look at that timing. Diana wanted to smother her tiny face with wet kisses.
’’She is hungry...’’ Diana grabbed her bag from the kitchen island while rocking the little girl in her arms gently to calm her down.
She looked around for Angel’s stuff that she dropped on the couch of their brand new fully furnished apartment earlier and while her body seemed to be rushing around so that she could hurry up and soothe the little girl’s hunger, it was also in an awkward attempt to not address what she had felt a moment ago.
When she turned around to walk towards the Master’s bedroom, her gaze accidentally or not brushed past the man who had not budged an inch from the barstool. His presence made the kitchen look smaller than it was.
’’Lunch?" his warm voice seeped inside her like honey.
Diana hesitated, ’’Let me feed Angel first. We can then go back to the mansion to have lunch or some restaurant if you want. I’d love to eat here but there is nothing edible around yet so...’’ she paused for a moment before adding, ’’It will take me some time to finish this.’’
’’So?"
He addressed the latter part of her sentence.
She blinked, hesitated again, and blinked some more before she stopped rocking Angel for a moment, ’’So, I think you don’t have to wait for us here. I believe you have better things to do on weekends than sitting there and admiring the kitchen.’’
Maxim glanced at her for a moment before he pushed himself to his feet.
And a hint of disappointment settled in the bottom of her stomach.
Diana had the strongest urge to cuss her seven generations right there and then. On one hand, she wanted him out of her sight to not feel so flustered and on the other hand, she felt like a heartbroken teenager when he got up to leave. Wow, ancestors, are you proud of this descendant you left behind?
Regardless of her conflicted feelings, she composed herself, ’’I will see you at the mansion later. Have fun.’’
’’Okay,’’ Maxim walked out of the door without looking back at her.
Her throat constricted slightly as she watched his back from the gap until the door closed.
’’Do we already feel his absence, baby?" Diana whispered as she slowly leaned back against the kitchen island, her gaze stuck on the closed door.
Angel who was crying a moment ago had turned her attention to sucking her dress.
’’We will get used to it,’’ Diana walked towards the Master bedroom while carrying all her stuff, ignoring the nagging feeling in her heart.
