Conquering His Cold Heart
Chapter 466 - 466: A Decision

Caspian sat brooding in his study room until it was quite late. To be more precise, he sat there until it was way past Anastasia's bedtime, so as to avoid having an accidental encounter with his wife as he headed back to his own chamber.

After leaving all the documents in disarray, he sprung up from his seat and began to stride down the corridor while holding his head high as usual.

Obviously, he could not avoid Anastasia's chamber since he had to pass through that path to reach his room.

He tried his best to walk past the guarded main door. However, when he reached the door, his feet automatically made their stop.

The Queen's guards also didn't seem to mind his presence there since they immediately stood aside and bowed to him.

Caspian gritted his teeth when they simply stepped aside to let him go inside the chamber.

Though that was what he wanted to do at the moment, he angrily scolded them, but at a low volume in case his wife was already asleep.

"Aren't you two supposed to be guarding the Queen? You two should be stopping me, not standing aside like this!"

Isaac and John exchanged a glance with each other in confusion.

And John took the initiative to answer the King, "Your Majesty, the Queen has ordered us to send you in case you came to see her. We are simply following her order."

Caspian felt a prick in his heart. 'So, she still trusts me to behave properly when I am in her presence.' He didn't want her to be that trusting of him when he himself was having a hard time trusting himself.

He fisted both of his hands and took out the anger on the guards.

"You two should know better! You promised to protect Anastasia at all costs. And you both are very well aware that, right now, I am her number one enemy. What if I go inside and hurt her?"

Isaac looked down and couldn't help but mumble, "If you were going to hurt her, you wouldn't be standing here and lecturing us about her safety."

"What did you say?" Caspian furrowed.

"Nothing." Isaac lowered his head even further to avoid looking at the angry man hovering before him.

John cleared his throat when he saw Caspian about to smack Isaac for talking back to him. And he quickly asked, "So, you don't want to check up on the Queen, Your Majesty?"

Caspian's demeanor instantly took a drastic turn. He isn't looking like the most dangerous ruler anymore. He simply looked like a husband who is greatly worried about his wife.

"I-Is she asleep?" he asked first.

John slightly smiled and answered, "One of the personal maids departed for her room a while ago. So, I am assuming that Her Majesty is asleep right now."

'Asleep…' Caspian repeated that word in his head and pondered for a moment. 'I can surely see her before going back to my room, right?' He sighed and said to himself in a restrictive manner, 'Only a glance.'

"Open the door," he commanded.

Isaac quickly pushed the door open for the King.

Caspian entered the room like a ghost, hovering a foot above the floor so as not to make any sound and wake his wife from her sleep.

Martha, who was just dozing off, actually mistook Caspian for a real ghost and gasped. Thankfully, she didn't scream or else she would have woken up Anastasia who had just fallen asleep after tossing and turning on the bed for about an hour or so.

Caspian looked at Martha who was clenching her fist over her chest and then meaningfully pressed his index finger over his lips.

Martha realized who was floating about in front of her and copied Caspian's gesture before nodding her head.

Caspian swiftly floated inside the bedchamber that he shared with his wife for the past months. He was welcomed by the sweet aroma wafting around in the chamber, prompting his brain to play sweet memories that he shared with his wife.

He shook his head so as to put those memories aside for now and then focused his eyes to look at the woman who was curled up on the bed, underneath a heap of thick blanket.

He slowly landed on the floor and began to analyze everything that was before his eyes.

The first thing that he noticed was how Anastasia was sleeping while occupying only her side of the bed. The side that was close to the window was reserved for him like always. The second thing that he noticed was how she was facing the window, facing the invisible him.

Caspian felt a strong urge to go around the foot of the bed and climb in. He wanted to cuddle with his dear wife like how he used to.

However, he dug his nails into his palm and stopped himself from doing so.

He knew that he would eventually need to forgive his wife and go back to treating her how he normally did. With love.

But that was not tonight.

He still needed to have the much-needed conversation with his wife that he had been running away from. However, he was afraid to do so. He was afraid that he would find out things that he was better off not knowing.

But then again, he couldn't forgive her properly without knowing what he was forgiving her for.

He subconsciously sat down on the bed and reached out his hand to caress Anastasia's hair.

"Mmm…" Anastasia let out a moan.

Caspian realized what he was doing and quickly pulled his hand away from her.

Anastasia wriggled inside the blanket and turned her side, facing Caspian.

Caspian was sitting there, unmoving. His heart was beating a little faster because he thought he woke her up. He wasn't ready to have the talk right now! He panicked.

However, his heartbeat settled down when he saw that Anastasia was still deep in her sleep.

His eyes softened when his gaze fell on Anastasia's face. He couldn't help but pity his wife and feel sorry for her.

She looked pale. There was no color whatsoever left on her cheeks. Her lips looked chapped and rough. Her eyes were almost fully encircled by the dark marks.

Before he realized it, tears were sliding down his smooth cheeks.

He could not bear to see that his beautiful wife was slowly submitting to the dark fate that awaited her.

Hamilton's words began to play in his ears. 'Don't do anything stupid like pushing her away or deliberately hurting her. Can you imagine realizing your mistake when it's already too late?'

He forcefully wiped his tears away and then looked at his wife with newfound resolution. 'I don't care why she agreed to be my bride. I don't care if the reason behind it will crush my soul. I can't allow this to continue. I am hurting both of us by trying to push her away.'

Caspian took a deep breath and leaned forward to plant a soft kiss on his wife's head.

And he softly whispered to her, "I am sorry for being mad at you. You are already struggling and I…"

He knitted his brows. He was angry at himself for doing and saying a lot of things to hurt his wife.

He looked back at her and whispered while gently caressing her hair, "Let's have a proper talk tomorrow, love."
