Conquering His Cold Heart -
Chapter 465 - 465: Remorseful
Hamilton slightly raised his brows. He was in disbelief that he just heard Caspian apologize to him.
"Y-You're sorry?" he unintentionally mumbled.
Caspian let go of his hold on Hamilton's coat and nodded his head innocently.
He also got up on his feet and then said while showing deep remorse on his face, "I am sorry for being so self-absorbed that I never really cared for your feelings. I shouldn't have shut you off for all those years just because you never gave up hope. I really am sorry for never acknowledging your pain."
"Er…" Hamilton let out an uncomfortable chuckle as he was at a loss for words.
Who would have thought that the egocentric cousin of his was capable of making an apology, a heartfelt one at that?
Hamilton's cold heart warmed up a little at that gesture from Caspian.
He kept on staring at Caspian's downcast face and finally mumbled whimsically, his tone deprived of any malice, "I just realized that hearing the word 'sorry' from your mouth is really nauseating, and you said that three times within a minute."
He heaved a deep sigh and quickly added, "That's more than enough for a few centuries to come."
A little chuckle escaped Caspian's downturned lips. And he said while trying to match his cousin's energy, "Well, you better imprint it in your mind then. You're not getting an apology from me again."
Hamilton smiled. And although he was younger than Caspian in age, he gave a few ruffles to Caspian's hair to show his brotherly love.
He pulled his hand away before Caspian got the chance to swat it away. Then as he bent down to pick up the paper that was lying near his foot, he offered, "Why don't I keep on pursuing this lead as I journey around for the potential cure for the Queen?"
Caspian's heartbeat rose a little.
"Can you do that?" he asked as he looked at Hamilton with sad yet hopeful eyes.
Hamilton looked at the handwriting one last time before folding the paper and putting it back in his coat pocket.
"Even if the person waiting to be discovered isn't Percival, it will at least provide me peace of mind if I can find the person behind this handwriting." Hamilton looked even more determined now that Caspian also wanted the same thing.
Caspian nodded and sighed in relief.
"Thank you for not giving up on Percival." He gave a subtle, appreciative smile to his cousin.
Despite all this, Caspian didn't let himself be too hopeful because he didn't want to get hurt all over again. He kept his expectation at rock bottom.
After exchanging a few more pleasant words, Hamilton was ready to depart from the castle. He had to go home and make a lot of preparations for his journey ahead.
Before leaving, he didn't forget to give a piece of advice to Caspian.
"Cousin, I hope that you can find a way to reconcile with the Queen soon enough. I really hope that it won't come down to the worst fate, but if it really is unavoidable like she said, then you two don't have much time together. Better not let this precious time go to waste."
Every time Caspian heard this, it stung his chest as if a whole hive of bees was attacking him.
He clenched his jaw and whispered from between his teeth, "I know… I know that it can end that way. That's why I hate this situation even more."
His eyes instantly got blurred by the tears that came gushing. He took a sharp breath through his mouth to cool his aching throat and uttered, "I've never felt this helpless in my life before."
Hamilton could see that Caspian was really close to falling apart. It hurt him to see his cousin in such a pitiful state.
He patted Caspian's shoulder and said the only thing that he could at the moment, "For now, do what you can do. Stay close to her and offer her support. You two need each other. Leave the rest to me and the others. I am sure at least one of us will find something that can help her."
"I really hope so." Caspian gulped hard.
Hamilton patted Caspian some more and said, "If you need a friend to talk to, you know you can always rely on Vincent. Better mend things with him too. He was afraid that you would do something harsh to the Queen and her handmaid for what they did. You should let him know that you won't do anything dramatic."
Caspian just nodded and didn't say anything more. He was aware that Vincent had developed a soft spot for Tilla. He could understand his friend's worries.
"Alright, I will head out now." Hamilton waved his hand while flashing a gentle smile at Caspian. "I will write to you and keep you updated."
"Okay." Caspian gave a nod and said, "Have a comfortable journey."
The study room fell silent once again. Caspian went back to sit down on his chair to do some thinking, and inevitably, he began to think about his wife.
"Should I go and talk to her?" he asked himself.
He did want Anastasia to clarify the reason why she specifically came to Sorvando, to him. There was no doubt that there was a motive behind that.
After all, it was now clear to him that he was his wife's prey and not the other way around. Making him fall head over heels for her was her deliberate and conscious choice. There was also no doubt that somewhere along the way, she had hopelessly fallen into her own trap.
Caspian's frown lines formed an arch on his forehead when he mumbled in his deep yet low voice, "What was it that you were seeking from me, Anna? Will you tell me the truth if I ask you now? Or will you keep on concealing your true intention fearing my wrath?"
The more he thought about it, the more he seemed conflicted. He wanted to know the truth. But at the same time, he also didn't want to put Anastasia in a difficult situation again.
"Arghh!" He covered his face and groaned when his head began to spin.
He rested his head on the backrest of his chair and thought to himself, 'Maybe I should allow her to open up to me in her own time. I shouldn't be too forceful. I might end up losing my calm in front of her again, which I definitely don't want.'
