Conquering His Cold Heart -
Chapter 464 - 464: Sorry!
"Yes! Percival!" Hamilton excitedly exclaimed as though he had found the living-breathing man instead of just a paper with familiar handwriting.
Caspian glanced at the paper once more, this time in an analytical manner.
The paper looked brand new. There were no traces on the paper that proved that it was from centuries ago.
He could tell what got Hamilton excited.
No wonder that as soon as Caspian recognized the handwriting, a small flicker of hope immediately lit up inside his wounded heart as well.
Hamilton's excited voice suddenly pierced through the silent room.
"You also think that this was written by Percival, don't you?" Hamilton flipped the paper and was now taking another look at the handwriting.
Caspian didn't speak.
He was unable to utter a single word because he felt as if something was gnawing the back of his throat. He simply pressed his lips together and looked away from the paper instead.
Hamilton, on the other hand, was so focused on the elegant strokes on the paper that he didn't notice how Caspian looked as though he was on the verge of tears.
So, he continued sharing his story, "The same thought crossed my mind when I found this paper. I even looked around to see if I could… you know…" He gulped and finished his sentence, "…find him... But there was no luck."
His expression turned gloomy after that.
However, his eyes still continued to appreciate the cursive strokes as he further explained about his frequent visit outside the Kingdom, "And ever since then, I have been actively looking for him."
He flapped the paper at Caspian and then said in a dejected tone, "I wanted to find any definite proof before bringing this up to your attention. But after seeing how furious you got with Vincent and Zenon, I thought that I should show this paper to you, even though this doesn't really prove anything yet."
Caspian clenched his fist over his heart as he took some moment to process everything that he just heard.
With every second, his expression turned from sad to agitated and then angry.
The discomfort that was already in his heart had increased exponentially.
His face soon contorted to form a furious expression. And in the next second, he smacked the back of Hamilton's wrist really hard, forcing his cousin to drop the paper on the floor.
"Oww!" Hamilton glanced at Caspian, shocked at the sudden aggression that Caspian was showing him.
Ignoring Hamilton's questioning glare, Caspian immediately shouted at his cousin in a controlled voice which still sounded very threatening, "What's with your obsession with Percival?"
"I know… I know…" Hamilton submissively raised his hands slightly above his head and began to defend himself, "This doesn't prove anything. That's why I didn't tell you about it until now. But trust me… it was not my intention to make you sad or angry by showing this to you now. I just–"
*Slam* *Crash*
Before he could finish speaking, Hamilton found himself punched and then pinned on the floor.
It was not that he couldn't have easily blocked the incoming attack, he just let it happen because Caspian was too furious to listen to reason.
And rightly so, Caspian grabbed Hamilton by the collar and screamed at his face, "I have asked you countless times not to keep on doing this, you piece of ham! Don't try to give me hope because you know and I know that he is dead!"
Hamilton had seen this coming. They had fought countless times over the centuries regarding the same matter.
He pitifully looked at Caspian and spoke calmly, "But there's a small possibility that he is still alive. We never found the body."
"Do you think that–" Caspian choked on his words. He let go of his hold on Hamilton's collar and sat down on the floor, beside Hamilton.
He then looked down, held his head, and asked in a voice full of resentment towards his cousin, "Do you think that Percival wouldn't have returned home for all these years if he was still alive? Why do you keep on bringing this up?"
He gritted his teeth and shouted from the depth of his soul, "And must you continue with this farce even when I am quite literally at the lowest point of my life? At least have some sympathy."
"I am not trying to stir up more trouble for you. I was just–"
Before Hamilton could finish talking, Caspian raised his hand in stop motion and sternly said, "I cannot entertain you right now, Hamilton. Please leave."
Hamilton sighed and rubbed his forehead in an irate manner. "I am not seeking any sort of entertainment, cousin. All I was doing was coming clean to you. I didn't want to end up like Vincent or Zenon because of some misunderstanding between us."
He deeply furrowed his brows and said with honesty, "Not when the relationship between you and I was finally starting to get better. I don't want to go back to how we were for centuries – avoiding each other for years and taking jabs at each other whenever we meet briefly at some family event."
He stopped to take a deep breath and then added, "But I should have known that talking about Percival would put you off. I mean I knew it… But I still said it just to avoid any misunderstanding in the future."
Caspian was dumbfounded by Hamilton's honesty.
He had never given it a thought that Hamilton had also lost someone precious to him when Percival went missing after the war. And maybe constantly seeking the truth was his way of coping.
To add to that, instead of comforting each other, he grew distant from Hamilton just because he kept on bringing Percival up in every conversation and reminding him of the loss when he was trying his best to forget the pain.
Caspian was suddenly nudged back to reality from his thoughts when he heard Hamilton's voice.
"I apologize for choosing the wrong time to bring this up and making you feel like I am attacking you on purpose. Believe me, that was not my intention." Hamilton sighed when he still didn't get any response from Caspian.
It pained him to think that Caspian would start avoiding him again. It was not how he wanted things to turn out.
Thus, Hamilton decided to leave before things got worse than they already were.
He glanced at Caspian, who was still looking down, and then spoke through his downturned lips, "I will notify you if I find something to help the Queen. I will take my leave now. I apologize once again."
Caspian slowly turned his head to look at Hamilton.
Hamilton had already gotten up and was straightening his shirt's collar.
Just when Hamilton stepped his foot toward the door, Caspian grabbed the rim of Hamilton's coat and looked up with eyes that were glistening with tears.
He gulped and then said in a much softer tone, "I'm sorry… for everything."
