Chapter 27: Spells [1]
Arthur arrived late in the night, when he finally left the office the school day was already over.
He left at 10pm to be precise. That was because he had rest his head on the table for a quick nap after finishing up and giving the files back to Rex, unknowingly he had slept off.
And when he woke up it was already 9, so he decided to go over what would be done tomorrow.
Now, he had just left.
"I suppose I should stretch my limbs."
Arthur had nothing to do as it was late in the night, normally he would go to sleep so he would wake up early, but he wasn’t even feeling tired.
"Maybe practice some magic or something?"
He hadn’t used magic much since he came into this world.
He had only used some basic-ranked spells since he had returned, only using his other higher-ranked spell for convenience.
Not once had he used any of his attack spells, and that was surprising since he actually created quite a few of them.
He walked out of the room and went in the direction of Celestine’s room.
She had two classes under Arthur, he also planned to use this chance to ask her on how he had performed.
With her help he could straighten out anything wrong with his lectures.
On the way, he saw Adrian.
"Sir, you’re back."
The butler said upon noticing him.
"Yes, is Celestine awake."
The man shook his head.
"She went to bed an hour ago."
Arthur nodded upon hearing this and turned around.
"If I may ask, sir, where are you going?"
"To the training room."
"The normal one?"
"No, my personal one."
Arthur replied as he walked away.
There were lights positioned around the estate, making sure he wouldn’t get lost in the dark.
He arrived shortly in the room.
’I can’t believe this is the first time in here.’
His training room was a room made of steel.
Normally, normal steel wouldn’t be enough to stop magic. So, not only was it reinforced steel, but the training room was also reinforced with high-level runes.
The estate was given to him on the day of the ceremony, shortly after he was possessed by a spirit and was inactive for three years.
During the time before he was possessed he never once saw a reason to even enter the training room, not even when he was mapping the whole estate.
Arthur crouched, using his hands to feel the cold steel floor.
"...."
A large magic circle appeared beneath his feet.
"I’m still not used to the delay."
He wanted to sigh but held himself back.
Normally, forming the magic circles on any surface, even if said surface was a human being, wouldn’t even take a second to form.
Now it had taken two seconds.
Even though he had been setting the magic circles in places, he still couldn’t get used to the delay.
After all, casting magic was supposed to be instantaneous....
At least for everyone named Arthur Vaelthorne.
He shook his head to get rid of the thought.
"I suppose I should start now."
"With a veteran-ranked spell."
Basic-ranked spells.
Beginner-ranked spells.
Intermediate-ranked spells.
Advanced-ranked spells.
Veteran-ranked spells.
Master-ranked spells.
Grandmaster-ranked spells.
Sage-ranked spells.
And Legendary-ranked spells.
He was starting with a familiar spell, one that he had seen a while ago.
Arthur extended his right hand and closed his left eye, then he slowly brought two of his fingers down until his hand was shaped like a gun.
He visualized the mana pathway, or to be more precise; he visualized the magic circuit.
Connecting the nodes were straightforward.
’Wind Bullet.’
A concentrated blast of wind shot out from his fingertips.
"Nice."
A slight smirk formed at his lips.
He brought both hands forward and used it again.
’Wind Bullets.’
He shot at the air with one hand, then another followed from the other.
"This is actually a good spell."
If he was chasing someone down, he could shoot at their legs to make them fall. It was much more efficient than using a windblade considering the noises the person made from being hit would be much less.
One cut off an entire leg if aimed right.
The other only hindered movement.
Unfortunately, this spell was plagiarized and presented by Arthur even though it wasn’t him that created it.
The creator could have gotten significant recognition if he was the one that proposed it.
"Now, a master-ranked spell."
Arthur had created a spell of this rank.... No, he had created a spell of a higher rank, but then he had brought it down to master for convenience.
But that wasn’t what he was going to use.
He removed his gloves and rubbed his hand together until they got sweaty.
"Now...."
He held his hand down, closing his eyes to envision it.
The magic circuit for this one was much harder.
Anything master-ranked and above required the nodes in the magic circuit to be input in a set pattern. There were consequences for not inputting them as such.
Shortly after, he opened his eyes.
’Ice Haven.’
As soon as he finished—
His hands froze....
"Good."
He had cast the spell under a second. It was good time considering it took normal mages minutes to prepare the spell.
The spell "Ice Haven" worked in the way that it acted on the liquid to freeze whatever it came in contact with.
It didn’t require sweat too, the moisture in the air could also work to freeze someone from the inside out.
Sweat on the other hand froze someone from the outside.
Using moisture was much deadly, that was why Arthur gathered sweat in his palms, he didn’t want to kill himself accidentally.
"Ice Haven" was originally a grandmaster ranked spell when it was introduced, the caster used it to kill a war prisoner and explained the intricacies of the spell.
However, just two years after it was branded at the grandmaster-rank, a scholar brought out a new spell.
A spell created just to counter "Ice Haven".
Not only that, but it was also ranked at intermediate. A lot of people could learn and use the new spell, but only few could learn and use "Ice Haven".
It was soon branded a master-ranked spell.
But even then it was still in the upper-echelons of master-ranked spells.
Immediately after, he used the basic-ranked flame spell.
It took a minute for his hands to completely defrost.
"Grandmaster now."
Arthur may not have said this, but it felt good to cast such high-ranked spells.
It was like forgetting that he had a crisis on his head by releasing attacks that could cost hundreds of thousands in property damage and lives lost.
"Haah...."
After this he would have to stop using magic.
He had no sage-ranked spells or even anything remotely similar to them.
A sage-ranked spell could level an entire country when cast, naturally they were classified under forbidden magic.
Arthur had tried to make one with the ideal that he could level the entire opposing empire in one attack.
Unfortunately, not only did it require time but it could also potentially give him brain damage.
Still, he had worked on one.
And shortly gave up after just three months.
’No use reliving old memories.’
The dropped sage-ranked spell was old.
His current focus was casting a grandmaster-ranked spell.
Arthur let out a deep breath as he concentrated.
His breathing calmed down as he visualized the magic circuit.
He swiftly connected them.
A purple small magic circle, one that formed in his palm appeared.
As soon as he finished the first magic circuit, another one swiftly took its place.
The spell required two layers, one for forming the magic circle, and the other for actually using the spell.
As he connected it, electricity crackled around him.
"Desubōru."
He said in a low voice.
It was only natural for him to name his magic like this.
The wind howled around him, forming a whirlwind as the spell manifested.
He raised a single finger.
And the wind stopped.
On the very finger he lifted into the sky, there was a small purple ball made of magic levitating slightly above it.
Occasionally, it let out a spark of electricity.
"Great."
He grinned widely before bringing his finger down.
"If I were to use it now, I’m not sure the barrier would hold."
He said.
The barrier set around here, the reinforced steel, and even the runes positioned wouldn’t be able to stop it.
It would then go on to destroy the estate.
And do much more damage....
This little purple ball was just that powerful.
"I should destroy it."
Arthur clasped his hand together, making the purple ball disappear harmlessly.
To make the purple ball was one thing, but to destroy it without causing damage was another.
He was essentially closing it down on itself without making it explode, it took a lot of mana to do that.
His grin didn’t fade.
"Using one veteran-ranked spell, one master and this grandmaster-ranked spell, my reserves are pretty much dry."
He mused.
"But next time, I’ll try somewhere deserted to—"
He didn’t finish.
He fell onto the ground, feeling a pain in his chest.
And then, he puked—
Blood.
