Chapter 98: Mimic

[You have killed an Aquatic Slime! Exp +5]

[Total Exp: 1135/1600]

Ignoring the notifications, Adrian wiped the sweat off his forehead. He had been killing the slimes for hours and had yet to get his hands on the organ he desired the most... their membrane.

Despite failing to get the desired skills, killing slimes proved more beneficial than he had expected. Hunting slimes was easy, and he could kill them endlessly to farm exp.

’Thanks to all the beasts I saw since coming here, the codex was upgraded to level 3,’ Adrian thought before closing the status tab.

Adrian checked his monster codex, hoping for an upgrade. Even though the monster codex had upgraded to level 3, Adrian’s organ absorption slots remained at five, except for the Minotaur’s heart.

He had yet to gain an extra slot as he thought he might because the Faithful Spouse only gave him an organ slot ahead of time, not a new one as she had informed him.

’I guess even the mighty entities have to work within some constraints.’ Adrian shook his head as the gentle rustle of leaves and the occasional chirp of birds stole his attention.

Life in the tribes, despite the hardships, wouldn’t have been too bad had he not been a slave, that is. Moreover, he had already given up hope of ever returning to earth, so if he ever wanted to settle, living with the Banurs seemed like a good choice once he was done avenging his death.

As Adrian pondered his life with Banurs, a bird had the misfortune of landing in the pond. Slimes, quick to pounce on any prey, swarmed towards her. Without hesitation, Adrian used a pitchfork to flick her out of harm’s way.

While it wasn’t the kindest way of saving the bird, it was the quickest, and sometimes, being quick was more important than anything. The slimes, upset by the bird’s disappearance, nestled in the bottom of the pond as usual.

’Three corpses were not enough to fill your greedy bellies, huh?’ Adrian chuckled before dipping the pitchfork in the pond, stirring up the murky depths where the slimes lurked.

Since he helped the elf slaves escape, Adrian had been left alone to tend to the slime farm. In light of recent events, it would take a day or two for others to help him out. In other words, Adrian was alone with the slimes.

Being all by himself, nobody bothered to watch over him since the settlement’s borders were under strict surveillance. Someone would have to be suicidal to even think about attempting to escape them.

But for Adrian, the lack of security meant he had an opportunity to do what he had wanted since yesterday and absorb the gelatinous fluid from the slimes.

With a steady hand, Adrian reached into the water and grasped a passing slime. Its jelly-like body squirmed in his grip, trying to free itself, but he held on tight.

The acid from the slime burned his skin, but Adrian held on before quickly killing the slime.

Adrian could have killed the slime with the pitchfork if he had wanted to but opted not to. Others could’ve been unaware of it, but thanks to [Analysis], Adrian knew what enchantments were placed on the tool.

One such enhancement was a magic spell that counted the number of slimes killed using the pitchfork. The container where the dead slimes were kept also had the same spell.

If the numbers from both counters didn’t match up upon inspection, Adrian would be in trouble, especially since the tribe was already alert, and he didn’t want to give them any more reason to doubt him.

’Let’s see what I get this time...’

Devourable Organs:

1. Mimetic Membrane: Harvesting the slime’s specialised membrane responsible for mimicking textures and patterns, the User could acquire the ability to alter their appearance at will, camouflaging themselves against various surfaces.

- Grade: Rare

- Compatibility: High (71-80% integration success rate)

- Remarks: Integration may result in occasional instability, causing unintended shifts in appearance or difficulty controlling camouflage patterns. It might be solved with practice.

- Status: Available [Requires successful extraction from a live specimen]

2. Adaptive Pseudopods: By absorbing the slime’s flexible appendages, which can alter shape and function, the User gains the ability to manipulate their limbs for various tasks, including combat or traversal.

- Grade: Uncommon

- Compatibility: Moderate (41-50% integration success rate)

- Remarks: Integration may lead to enhanced dexterity but could also cause occasional loss of motor control or unintended transformations of limbs.

- Status: Available

3. Bioluminescent Glands: By extracting the slime’s bioluminescent glands, the User can acquire the ability to emit light from their body, which is potentially helpful for illumination in dark environments or as a signalling mechanism.

- Grade: Common

- Compatibility: High (71-80% integration success rate)

- Remarks: Integration may result in the occasional uncontrollable bursts of light or difficulty regulating luminosity.

- Status: Available

Note: If the choice isn’t made in 120 seconds, the User won’t be able to absorb any organs.

’Finally!’ Adrian’s eyes sparkled when his desired option appeared.

However, before absorbing a new organ, he had to get rid of one of his old ones. Luckily, the decision wasn’t too hard. He decided to let go of the Ratling’s fur, figuring the slime’s membrane could do the job just as well, if not better.

[Please make contact with the target: Mimetic Membrane.]

[Note: Depending on the User’s compatibility with the targeted organ, the User might or might not feel some discomfort.]

Adrian knew the drill and prepared himself. He wouldn’t feel much discomfort since he shared high compatibility with the membrane, thanks to the troll blood that made most integrations quick and relatively painless.

[Target acquired: Mimetic Membrane.]

[Integration in Progress...]

Slowly, Adrian felt the slimy fluid seep into his skin, infusing into his body like a second layer of skin. His body felt strangely warm, probably because of the membrane’s acidic nature, but the troll blood was quick to counter it.

[Analysing the desired component...]

[Incorporating a ’Skill’ into Chimaera physiology... Please hold on.]

[Integration Complete.]

[The User has obtained the Skill: Mimic.]
