Chapter 97: Busted (2)

Adrian had never thought a child, no older than eight would be the reason for his downfall. He had no idea how the kid got to know about him as he had scanned the barn thoroughly for any witnesses last night.

But it was true as the kid pointed a trembling finger toward Adrian, his voice shaking as he accused, "That man is behind the missing people!"

Shoka turned around, and his eyes locked on Adrian. With a signal, he instructed the others to get their weapons and follow him. The tribals dismounted from their tiaks and approached Adrian.

’Shit!’ Adrian thought, gulping down saliva.

Adrian’s heart pounded in his chest as he watched Shoka and his tribals slowly head towards him. Adrenaline flooded his veins as he tried to find a way out of the situation. But before he could make a move, Shoka and his men were upon him.

With no time to spare, Adrian braced himself for a fight, his muscles tensing as he prepared to defend himself.

It would mean the end of the mission to figure out the relationship between the Church and Tulkas. But there was nothing else he could do there. After all, getting caught was not an option.

However, to his surprise, Shoka walked right past him and grabbed the old man behind him.

"Is this the one?" Shoka demanded, his gaze fixed on the child.

"Yes, that’s him! He’s the one who went outside after the masters left!" The child nodded eagerly, pointing accusingly at the baffled old man.

Adrian turned and saw it was the same guy from last night who had threatened to snitch on him, and a concealed smile appeared on his face.

He’d have felt a bit guilty had it been someone else, but the old man had shown his true colours last night and shown he couldn’t be trusted. So Adrian didn’t give two fucks about what happened to the man, just like he knew the oldie wouldn’t care about anyone else.

"I didn’t do anything! Please, let me go!" the old man pleaded, his voice filled with desperation. "I don’t know what the damned kid is talking about!"

Shoka, too, appeared sceptical. No matter how hopeless Milka and his friends were, an old man like him would not have been able to harm them—not until the oldie somehow regained his abilities.

However, he didn’t have much option. His hands were tied, and the old man was the only lead he had.

"Yeah, yeah, save some talkin’ for later. You’ll need it."

Shoka’s grip tightened on the old man’s arm as he said those words before he and his men dragged him away, ignoring the old man’s protests.

Shoka and his men climbed on their Tiaks and were about to leave when his eyes fell on the kid. he halted his Tiak, the beast’s hooves kicking up dust as they stopped.

He reached into the bag strapped to his Tiak and pulled out a food packet wrapped in leaves.

"Catch!" he commanded, tossing the packet to the child.

The child caught it with shaky hands, eyes widening in surprise. The kid had expected some sort of reward, but not an entire food pack!

Shoka’s gaze hardened as he watched the kid’s expression. He warned him in a low voice, "Don’t share it. Keep it for yourself."

The child nodded, clutching the packet tightly to his chest. Shoka’s steely gaze then swept over the other slaves. His expression was enough to let them know he wanted them to leave the child be.

With a final glance at the child, he kicked his Tiak, and the beast snorted as they rode away from the slave camp, leaving behind a trail of dust and fear.

As Shoka and his men disappeared into the distance with their ’culprit’, Adrian sighed in relief. His eyes fell on the child, who was busy devouring the contents of the packet Shoka had thrown at him.

’...he didn’t accuse someone just to get some food, did he?’

The kid noticed Adrian’s gaze and immediately hugged the food pack tighter before making angry faces at him. Adrian couldn’t help but laugh at the kid’s reaction.

The kid must have thought his angry expression would scare the other slaves away, but it didn’t work out that way. Instead of looking fierce, he looked adorable, like any other kid would.

’Yup, he definitely did it for the food.’

With that, he decided it was time to get to work. But just when he was about to leave, he sensed a familiar presence nearby. Someone he knew was near... but Adrian struggled to recall exactly who it was.

’Why does it feel like I’m forgetting about someone important?’

In the heart of the Forbidden Forest, a band of heroes emerged from the crack. They were dressed in sturdy armour and armed to the teeth, ready to confront whatever dangers lurked in this strange land.

"Those bloody Ravens! Who do they think they are, ordering us around like this? I’d smash their heads if I could!" Marcus shouted, clenching his fists.

"Take it easy," Clara said, shaking her head. "Losing our cool now won’t do us any good."

Sophia, Amelia and Vincent chose to be silent as they made their way through the forest.

As the Pope had announced, the heroes had been sent to the north to subjugate the tribes they came across. Weirdly enough, they were instructed to stay with a tribe called the Tulkas, who were said to assist them in their mission.

Sophia felt puzzled. She remembered that all the tribes were supposed to be together, fighting against Nexaria. So, she couldn’t understand why one tribe would want to help them attack the others. But before she could ponder more about it, Vincent rushed to her side.

"How are you holding up?" he asked her.

"..."

"I know Adrian’s passing has affected all of us, but we can’t keep grieving forever, can we? I’m sure he would’ve wanted us to move forward, especially you-"

"I’m sorry if I seem rude," Sophia interrupted, uninterested in Vincent’s words. "But I have no interest in talking with anyone else on this matter."

Vincent seemed a bit taken aback but took a step back on Sophia’s request, only to grit his teeth in anger.

’One day... you’ll be pleading for me to be with you. I swear...’
