Chapter 99: [Weekly Bonus Chapter 2/2] Strangers (1)
Within moments, Adrian’s [Camouflage] skill was replaced by the new [Mimic] skill. At a glance, both skills seemed similar, but there was a big difference.
Using [Camouflage] was easy, as it automatically adjusted to its surroundings to hide Adrian’s presence without his input. But he would have to play an active role while using [Mimic], be aware of his surroundings, and adapt accordingly to conceal himself.
In other words, the [Mimic] skill demanded more active participation from Adrian, marking a significant shift from the passive nature of the [Camouflage] skill
While it came off as a problem, the [Mimic] skill was in a league of its own. Unlike [Camouflage], the new skill had various features, such as altering Adrian’s appearance and voice and even mimicking certain behaviours of the individuals he transformed into, allowing him to resemble someone else entirely.
’It is a great skill, but it isn’t perfect,’ Adrian thought, quickly disposing of the slime’s corpse.
Upon reading the skill description, Adrian realised that the [Mimic] skill, while powerful, had its limitations. For instance, maintaining a particular form required a significant amount of concentration and mana, making it less effective in prolonged situations.
But even more troublesome were the limitations placed on effective skill use. For instance, to copy someone’s behaviour properly, he had to hang out with them for a while, and if he wanted to mimic their voice, he had to hear it with all its different emotions.
’Yet, it’s nothing that a bit of practice can’t fix, just like always.’
He was itching to test the skill and proceed with the next phase of his plan.
His primary objective was to learn about the Church’s relationship with the tribe. But getting his hands on that information wasn’t going to be as easy if he remained a lowly slave.
Adrian needed to gain importance. But unfortunately, unlike the Banurs, the Tulkas never bothered to form a relationship with the slaves. He didn’t have a chance to ’climb’ rankings in the tribe. Thankfully, with [Mimic], he wouldn’t need to climb any ladder to gain importance.
’All I need is a sacrificial lamb. Fortunately, I already made a sacrifice last night.’
A brat like Milka should be enough for his infiltration plan. What made it even better was that Milka’s dad worked as an Advisor to the chieftain of the Tulkas. If Adrian played his cards well, he would get the information he wanted in no time.
’But I can’t just turn into him in the middle of the settlement. I need to get out of here first, then I can cook a story to feed the tribe and act my way into Milka’s family.’
However, something happened before Adrian could put his plan into action as a few tribals approached him.
’Could they-?’
Adrian’s thoughts immediately went to last night, and he wondered if they had somehow gotten to know about Milka and the others.
"You, stop whatever you’re doing and come with us!" one of them instructed while the others surrounded him.
"...what’s going on-"
*Smack!*
"You don’t get to ask us questions!" the man yelled before turning to his companions. "Take him away and then fine any other humanoid slaves and lock them up. We can’t allow the delegates to find out about them!"
That was all that was said before Adrian was dragged back to the barns. But he wasn’t the only one. All the slaves that had human features were being locked up, which was rare as they would usually be worked to their bones rather than not allowing them to work.
’Heroes, huh?’ Adrian thought while being pushed. ’I see... the Church must have sent them to investigate something, and if they found out about their lost companions, they’d make a big deal. That’s why the tribe is keeping us out of sight.’
Adrian wasn’t sure about others, but if Vincent or Rowan were in charge, they’d make a big fuss about the slaves to boost their image and get ahead of one another in the succession race.
Adrian used to hate that quality in them, but now he was grateful for it. Their tendency to make a mess out of such situations was precisely what he needed as a distraction to slip away unnoticed and execute his plan.
However, an opportunity unexpectedly presented itself before Adrian, and he wasn’t about to let it pass. As they dragged him away, they heard a commotion from the distance. Some slaves were being a problem and needed to be put in place. The tribals cursed and glanced at each other, knowing they’d have to deal with the mess.
"Get to the barn yourself," one of them ordered Adrian, pointing to the barn. "If you’re not there when we return, we’ll make you wish you were."
Adrian, being the submissive slave he was, nodded before heading towards the barn. But once they were out of sight, he sprang into action.
With a quick twist, he broke free from the chains bounding him. Then, he darted behind some trees, hiding in the shadows.
"Phew," he muttered, wiping sweat from his brow. "That was close."
Before anyone could catch on, using the Mimic skill to morph his face into that of a random guy he once saw in the slums. He wasn’t sure if it would work since it was his first try, but as he caught his reflection in a nearby puddle, he couldn’t help but grin.
His eyes widened in disbelief as he saw his face staring back at him, but it wasn’t the same face he had known all his life.
"Holy... it actually worked!"
His skin, once pale and freckled, was now a deep shade of bronze, and his features were sharper and more defined. He couldn’t believe how well the [Mimic] skill had worked, even changing his skin colour.
"Wow," he whispered, running a hand through his newly darkened hair. "I never knew it could do that."
But there was no time to dwell on his newfound abilities as he rummaged through his inventory and found some spare clothes. He quickly dressed as a Nexarian and blended into the crowd, heading towards the gate.
As Adrian made his way to the gate, an unexpected sight greeted him: his former team entering the settlement just as he was about to leave.
