Chapter 55: [Weekly Bonus Chapter 2/6] Laughable Rumours
"Expecting s-something?" Adrian yelled and got up. "D-Definitely not!"
"Sure, I believe you," A’Mila said while pointing at Adrian’s crotch.
Embarrassed by the tent in his kilt, he quickly covered it. It was shameful of him, but he couldn’t help it biologically. Sometimes, the secondary head overrides the primary one. Besides, A’Mila did have a physique to die for.
’Stop thinking about!’ Adrian’s first head communicated with the other, and soon the situation was under control. But the embarrassment wasn’t over yet.
[The Entity, ’The Loyal Spouse in an Unfaithful Marriage’, is impressed and sponsors a stat point to the User. She further wishes to bestow a blessing upon you in exchange for an event. Will you accept her request?]
’What kind of request?’
[One involving public indecency.]
’...hard pass.’
[The Entity, ’The Loyal Spouse in an Unfaithful Marriage’, nods understanding your predicament and leaves.]
’What the heck’s wrong with these guys?’ Adrian thought and shook his head, not realising that A’Mila had gotten into his face. "Argh! What are you doing!?"
"I asked you something, but it seems you couldn’t hear my words," she replied, circling him once. "Either way, I’ll ask again. You don’t look all that strong. I wonder where you got the strength to manhandle Bakira?"
"Um... let’s just say you don’t judge a book by the cover," Adrian replied, trying to dodge the question.
He wasn’t sure if the tribal knew of the existence of entities and was worried about the reaction of the entities if he told A’Mila about them.
’It’s better not to. She might think I’m a lunatic and get rid of me.’
"Seems like you are hiding something," A’Mila commented.
However, Adrian’s attention was someplace else. Earlier, A’Mila had shown open hostility towards him, but now she was talking to him like they had known each other for quite a while. The sudden change in her demeanour was puzzling.
Suddenly, it struck him. He defeated Bakira to annoy A’Mila, but what if she didn’t see it that way? What if his victory had the opposite result, and he ended up impressing the Matriarch instead?
That would certainly explain the sudden change in her mood, but Adrian was worried about what came next. If he had impressed her, then surely she wasn’t thinking the same thing Adrian was...
"This isn’t some sort of h-husband interview, right? I already have someone waiting-" Adrian stuttered, and the next moment, A’Mila laughed like a maniac.
"Partner hunt? You thought I would do that?" she spoke between her laughs. "You’re cute. I’m sure you have girls fawning over you, but I’m not interested in you that way. Besides, I’m too old for you."
"Old?"
"Let’s see... in the Nexarian system, I would be in my mid-fifties. So yeah, I’m old enough to be your mother," A’Mila replied. "Even if I wasn’t, the Matriarch isn’t allowed to have partners, and her only concern is the tribe’s well-being. Nothing else."
Adrian was surprised. After all, A’Mila looked like she would be in her late twenties. But more than that, the books he had read about the tribes had painted a different picture, mentioning chieftains surrounded by harems.
The book didn’t mention it, but Adrian thought the practice could be necessary to create multiple strong offspring to carry on their lineage. While he disapproved of such a practice, he didn’t mind others doing it if necessary.
But the Church differed, often mentioning the tribals as devil-worshippers, and the harem ritual was merely a cover to hide their true objectives, requiring sacrificial newborns to impress the demons.
’I guess the Church would say anything to justify their attacks on the tribes,’ Adrian thought, scratching his head and wondering if the Church had any redeeming quality left.
With the little Adrian in the clear, Adrian pondered to come up with another reason for him to be dragged into A’Mila’s tent like a pet. It didn’t take him long to realise what it was all about.
However, A’Mila beat him to it before he could say a word and tossed him the collar.
"You don’t need to wear it inside my living quarters, but I would appreciate it if you wore it when you go outside," she said. "It would keep the others off your back, as I’m sure you don’t want their attention."
However, Adrian had something else going on in his mind and dropped the collar.
"You want an explanation, don’t you?" he asked. "Regarding Teach and my impromptu arrival?"
"At least you’re as sharp as she said," Vesper replied. "Yeah, that’s what I had in mind. But we’ve got to discuss this in private; can’t risk anyone else overhearing anything about this."
Adrian didn’t react, but his mind was racing. Between Vesper’s departure from the tribe and his arrival, something must have happened that led A’Mila not to trust the rest of her council.
’It’s either that, or it could be that she’s trying to see if I’m a spy who would play on her insecurities,’ Adrian thought.
’It’s probably the latter. Given the tight-knit community I’ve witnessed so far, any hint of betrayal would stand out like a sore thumb here.’
Regardless, Adrian opted not to delve into A’Mila’s vulnerabilities. Instead, he told her about his encounter with Vesper and their subsequent unwilling farewell.
A’Mila quietly took in what Adrian had to say in silence. Then, without a word, she stepped outside, heading for the tree beside her tent, and Adrian followed her out.
In a single punch, she snapped it in half. Usually, it wouldn’t have surprised Adrian; after all, many people could do something like it. But his eyes widened when he learned what kind of tree it was.
’She destroyed a Darkwood tree?’
With the anger out of her, A’Mila turned towards Adrian, "I’m sorry that you had to see the crude side of me-"
Attracted by the noise, the tribals came rushing towards A’Mila’s tent like moths to a flame, and the Matriarch’s foul mood didn’t go unnoticed by them.
"Come on, let’s continue this inside,"
A’Mila said as she noticed their presence before grabbing Adrian and taking him back inside the tent. Leaving people wondering what could have prompted their leader to act like that.
"She seemed to have taken a liking to the outsider, so the only thing that could have enraged her..." a voice murmured within the crowd. "Could it be that the outsider is unable to perform down there, and that’s what angered the chieftain?"
Although it was just a speculation, the news spread amongst the tribe like wildfire and all the desire the women had for Adrian died that very moment.
